Heading to Charlotte North Carolina

Reviews speak for themselves. It's clear from them what the courses here have to offer. We, the reviewers, have already done the legwork.

Quick note (or it may evolve, who knows...?):

I agree 100% with Mr. Sauls' love of Camp Canaan. However, dogs are not allowed. Nor are they allowed at Brackett's Bluff. So you'll probably have to skip those, worthy though they are.

The rest of the Charlotte courses are dog-friendly, but keep her on a leash anywhere near the more public areas. The law is more stringent - read: always leashed - but we see 'em out running loose all the time. Just know that a bored or overzealous Park Ranger might hassle you a bit. I've never seen them ticket anyone, but they will stop and give you what-for.

Don't sleep on Eastway (closer to uptown), Scrapyard (Idlewild Park, maybe 25 minutes from Elon, if that), or Plantation Ruins (Winget Park, again, about 20 minutes or so from Elon). All three are fun and scenic in their own ways.

Chester State Park - definitely play there if you can. It feels very different from most of these typical Carolina courses. From the Elon area, it's probably only an hour's drive. Really nice course in a forest of stellar pines. Manicured and very pretty - but stay out of the rough if you can. I think they charge $2.00 per person at the gate, but it has two courses - a pitch and putt shorty, and the main course, with long and short tees. It's one of my favorites, for sure.

Also, not for nothin', but if you want, hit me up via PM with any specific questions, or if you'd like a third or fourth on your card. I always enjoy meeting, and playing with, new people to the area. I always have a cooler full of good beer with me, too. :D

Thanks EarthRocker. We have the option of leaving the pup in a crate for a few hours, so hitting up some worthy, non dog friendly courses is in play. She is always on a leash in public. Simply not worth the hassle and potentially ruining the fun of others to do otherwise.

Once I finalize an itinerary, I will certainly be open to meeting up and throwing some plastic circles.......and throwing back a couple cold ones.

More info on WV

Adventures on the Gorge is located near Fayetteville, and has all kinds of lodging options and multiple restaurants as well as a fun little 9 hole disc golf course. Super cool place ! Best restaurant in Fayetteville is Pies and Pints.
The other must see in the immediate area is Summerville Lake. Gorgeous !

i played camp canaan a few weeks ago

two holes are currently rerouted and they were absolutely awful like throwing from the outfield to home plate baseball style (im not kidding the cage was the backstop for the pin)

however the rest of it was really solid with a few fun things thrown in that doesnt feel too gimmicky kinda like the style vq tried to pull off and failed at however riverbends seems much moar successful

you might get excited cuz two courses exist on site but the other course the beginner/family friendly one is pretty terrible even for starters

overall camp canaan riverbends was very enjoyable and just a pleasure to play (and worth the p2p and has replay value)

I'm not going to suggest any courses, but you should consider a stop in West Virginia. Our favorite spot is Fayetteville. Lots of great restaurants and hiking, situated near the New River Gorge.

I'll second this. West Virginia is beautiful, I love it there. The disc golf is great but the scenery is second to none.

The guy I'm quoting might be able to point you to a pretty fantastic course. 🤔

Zounds! The time is near!

Safe travels, Ru4por. It'll be a little warm, but...we've become Florida North these days, so some cloud cover and a good thunderboomer could pop up and cool you down a bit, pretty much any afternoon. Pack some emergency rain gear, and don't let it stop you! My last three rounds have been Wet Ones.

Thanks man. Rain is not a reason to stop playing. I think we will get most of our golf done in the mornings, should help with both the heat and rain chances. Boy, Charlotte folks are spoiled by the riches of disc golf around them. I don't think I will need to travel more than a couple dozen miles and should bag a dozen quality courses.

Very much looking forward to hearing some details/reviews about this trip. You know, since he didn't bother trying to play with me while he was here...I get it, though. No one wants to go out of town for a butt-whoopin'.

:D

Same. My wife and I are trying to decide where we want to go this fall/winter for a disc golf getaway. We usually shoot for going in October or November which limits us to warmer parts of the country. I assume the weather in the Carolinas isn't overbearingly warm in late October or early November?

No guarantees. Average high in my spot of the Carolinas on November 1 is 69 degrees. Record is 89, so it's possible.

Outside of the mountains, fall color peaks in early November, so it's a great time to visit.

Bumping this as we are just under two weeks from our 3 day trip. I think we are playing course based on the highest reviews. Couple questions.

1. Is there anything we need to know to avoid at certain times? Like is any course one to avoid on a Friday afternoon? Saturday morning?

2. I am used to playing courses with lots of open spaces and par 4s. Looking at pictures, these courses look kinda tight. Should I focus on mids and fairways more than DDs?

I'm going to piggy back into this thread as I think my wife and I have pinned our vacation down to the Charlotte area this year.

Instead of course recommendations, I'd actually like to know what area we should (or should not) be looking to stay?

Not being familiar with the area I don't want to book a place and find out I'm staying in the "hood". (No offense to any of you hood rats out there.)

We stayed in the Ballantyne area, South of Charlotte. The neighborhood was fantastic. We had an airbnb in an subdivision. They had an association pool for use and walking trails all over the place. The backyard was Elon Park (Eager Beaver and Angry Beaver). This whole area seemed clean, safe.

Can someone recommend a disc shop?

We did pop into Another Round. A somewhat limited selection, but most major brands represented. I am guessing they are struggling to get plastic, like everyone else. You can grab a cold beer and watch some disc golf while there, as well.
