Discing down adventures.

I guess I'll join in the fun! Its been a year since getting really serious about improving my game. Played like 2ish years before as an occasional chucker. I've definitely seen improvements but I played in the same tourney that started me off one year ago and my entire game was plagued with inconsistent technique so now I'm disc'ing down and rebuilding the bag along with my technique. So far:

170 DX Leo-driver, lol

180 DX Shark-mid

175 Star Aviar-driving putter
175 DX Aviar P/A-upshots
175 DX Aviar Classic (2)- putting putters only

Getting a solid putting routine was my first order of business and so far I've succeeded and now I'm a lot more accurate and confident in my putts. Now just working on driving and getting a solid repeatable technique that I can build confidence with.

My bag is pretty much going to stay at 12 molds, that's as far as I'm discing down.

I'm pretty confident with my bag now. I feel out of all the years I've been playing this is the best bag I have put together.

Been working on discing down recently, but placed a new disc order today to really solidify the bag for awhile. Here is what my bag will look like after the order comes in:

Putters:
2 173 Classic Judges

Mid Range:
175 Z Buzzz
168 X Buzzz
166 DX Wolf
3 168 X Comet

Fairways:
~150 DX Leopard
168 Pro Leopard
170 Pro Leopard
167 DX Teebird

Distance Driver:
171 DX Sidewinder

Ok so in the last 3 weeks my bag has changed a good bit from even this. Here is the newest version:

Fairways:
DX Leopard (pretty stable)
Star Leopard (OS)

Mids:
Flying Squirrel (It's a Comet)
Ti Buzzz (OS)
X Buzzz (Stable w/fade, sits a bit better than the Z)
Z Buzzz (Stable w/fade)
DX Shark (Super floaty US)

Putters:
2 Judges

The Pro Leopards will likely make a return to my bag in the near future, but I may just wait until I am able to buy a new bigger bag. The Ti is the newest Buzzz and also the least thrown, but I'm liking it so far. The Shark, on a straight throw, eventually glides right to about 2 o'clock, so it's nice and US. The Flying Squirrel is actually rivaling the Buzzz for most thrown non-putter disc in my bag. It was flying nearly identically to my Comets in practice, so I decided to keep the Squirrel in my bag (for obvious reasons) and the Comets are in my car for field work.

Not positive about the Judges yet, but I did since a nice 20' or so putt I normally wouldn't hit when I was out Saturday, so maybe I'm learning their hyzer by now. My daughter is breaking in a DX Eagle and DX Gazelle currently and I may try them out a bit more in the near future, see if they take over the OS fairway slot that my Teebird had. Right now the Teebird isn't on the list, but I am bagging it just to throw extra shots to get it more broken in.

Honestly, most days I could cut this bag down to the Mids and Putters and not really miss anything, that Squirrel is looong. If I go to Iriquois tho, there is one hole that OS Star Leopard is perfect for. I wasn't actually familiar w/the hole (it had been most of a year since I'd played that course) and other than knowing it was around the bend, I threw blind. Didn't have distance posted either. I ended up throwing about 20' past the 240' hole, which surprised me very nicely. It was a reasonably sharp continual curve and it flew exactly how it needed to. There are a couple holes on the backside of Charlie Vettiner that can use that kind of curve too, but I seldom play the back 7 there.

Ok, enough jabbering about my bag. There's my update :)

I feel i don't need much, valkyrie, firebird, buzz and eagle, I mostly throw an eagle, tend to play one disc rounds with just an eagle, I carry a wizard as my putter, with 2 buzzes 2 eagles and 3 putters i carry a grand total of 9 discs, making choices is pretty easy

Comet is the best disc for one disc rounds. :D

sounds like a good idea to me.

i really don't have much of a need to throw my drivers except on long, open holes anyway. my core, fuse, comet and jokeri go long enough in the woods.

think i'll start doing mid/putter only rounds with the exception of a striker as a driver.

I get a lot of weird looks from my latest disc...

125 DX Sidewinder

But I can honestly say it has become one of my favorite discs in my bag. When I need to hyzer flip a disc this is my go to plastic.

When I throw it on a hard hyzer angle it starts to flatten out and fly straight after about the 175'-200' mark it starts to flip over towards an anny flight path.

I had never been able to do that with champ or star discs until now.

I always wondered how it was done. Now I know. You have to be able to over power the disc. I still don't have the arm speed of 900+ rated players so I had to try another way to get that shot.

i lost four discs today.

i wanted to get an ax and chop the rest of them to pieces; i was so angry.

but i hate feeling like i let something, so i played another round. every single hole i threw an opto pure. and i did pretty damn well. i decided to throw a driver on one particular hole, and lost that as well. i started swearing and stomping around again, but my pure went straight down the fairway.

i literally started laughing when i put the thing out to 300-330 on an open field hole.

i don't think i'm even going to bother with drivers for a while.

Wow man that sucks. What course was this? I want to make sure to never play it :) A lot of water or just real thick rough? Maybe someone will be nice and call you if you had them labelled.

Sounds like the Pure did well for you. I have been contemplating trying the Pure for putting purposes. What will the new bag look like if you drop those high speeds?

it was entirely my own fault; throwing crappy, got angry, started throwing multiples to try and get a better shot... the course was oakwood in cottage grove . . . first one got tossed in the pond next to hole 3. waded around for about half an hour looking for it, but we've had so much rain, the water was up to almost my waist.

the rest were all in the woods. spent hours looking today; i never lose my discs, either, but i've been on a streak lately.

anyway, right now here's what i've got...

putter - zero soft pure
driving putters/tweeners - opto pure and premium jokeri.
mids - m4, ibex, pain (might take it out; i find that i use my jokeri instead 99% of the time.)

to be honest, i did snag a driver today after that whole mess, a 169g volt which threw very nicely. but i don't need it right now. i parked a few holes i didn't think possible with a putter, and i like it.

I dont understand the op, he says he was getting rid of all long distance drivers then leaves a Valk and a Viking in the bag... 2 of my fave long distance drivers. I know its 3 years old but wtf?

Discing down, as it pertains to this thread, is using speed appropriate discs for your skill level instead of the high-speed drivers most people start out with. When you try to learn how to throw a golf disc by using a high-speed driver, that's like starting out a video game on extreme difficulty. Sure, some people are naturals and figure it out quickly thanks to a baseball background or something but most of us toil and learn terrible habits just trying to make the disc go sort of straight and end up in the general direction we want it.

Discing down to discs that are slower (NOT JUST PUTTERS AND/OR MIDS) and more in the stable/neutral range encourages learning disc golf throwing fundamentals. Once you get the basic fundamentals down, you can do whatever you want in terms of organizing your bag.

I have been picking up a few fairway drivers lately as well as throwing mids. Most of the time I am in better position off the pad. Yeah, the big boys go farther faster, but 300ft in the right direction usually trump 350-400 that burned right or faded left.

Viking and Valkyrie both throw great at reduced power.

My newest and latest favorite driver is a mid: Prodigy's M4 to be exact. Great disc, and a fantastic step towards fairway drivers. Replaced my Z Comet in the bag, which is saying something. I love the Comet, but I just couldn't deny any longer that the M4 simply does what I ask of it, and easier. Caveat: I don't ask it to fade. That's the M2s' job and it does that with pleasure. Another great disc to pick up for those needing easy distance/control: The Underworld. Supreme wooded course disc to boot!

Ya, I ended up reading like 10 back pages on 10 ppp. Still it seemed he wanted like fairway drivers and both are straight long distance drivers. Im kinda digging this idea tho as I can drive my mids almost as far as my drivers. It would really bring the precision game on point. I wouldnt mind throwing around my polecate or challenger and just showing up my friends with just my putters. LOL that would be hilarious.

to be frank, after throwing several rounds using nothing but a jokeri, a zero/opto pure and an m4, i find i truly am getting more controlled distance, and honestly not much shorter than my drives in most situations.

hole 17 at acorn, i usually pull a mid or a driver. i just stuck with my guns, pulled out the opto pure and parked it. i don't know how i really did it, though. it felt like i released early . . . the disc headed straight to 11 o'clock for about 200 feet, and then all of a sudden turned as if i had thrown a turnover for the last 100. it was a weird, late late turn. it worked, though. the random dude i picked up with on the course asked what it was and when i told him it was my putter, he didn't believe me until i showed him the one i had in zero soft.

it's nice to see other people doing similar things and getting good results. i think i'll stick with it for a while.

Here's my adventure. My goal this year was to improve on my entire game. For the last 3 1/2 months I've been playing with a disced down bag. Like many others when I first started playing I went and bought all the bad ass big gun drivers and completely ignored the put and approach game. So this season I made a change. And It's been working out great. So here's my bag at the start of the season.

1x Z Nuke 174g
1x Star Destroyer max weight
1x ESP Nate Doss Surge 173g
1x Champion Eagle 172g
1x Z Predator 173g
2x ESP Buzzz max weight
1x Z Buzzz max weight
1x Flx Drone max weight
2x ProD Challengers max weight

My bag now
Eagle
Predator
Buzzz
Drone
Challengers

Before I disced down I was maxing out at about 350-360 feet. My star Destroyer intimidated me so much and I never really had a Go To distance driver.

Since then I'm throwing my Eagle at a consistent 380-390 feet. I've also gotten my score down a substantial amount. I played my best at my home course 3 games in a row (+4). My buzzzes are dialed in and my predator and drone help my windy play a lot. My eagle has become my go to driver. I throw it with a little bit of bit of hyzer, it flips up turns a little bit and fades back really nice. I've also learned to control the disc so it doesn't always S on my drives. So for the last 4 rounds I've brought my Destroyer along with me. I'm throwing it 400-420feet. I'm impressed with how far I can throw it but it still intimidates me. Just feels like a brick in my hand. I also feel I'm skipping steps here. Out driving my Eagle by 20-30 feet doesn't seem like a big up for me.

Am I still not ready for a Destroyer? Should I add Surges or something slower to my bag to go along with my eagle? I'd like to add something as stable as my eagle but goes further. Also a longer Predator and a longer Buzzz. I had a Tangent that I really really liked and I was using it for straight to turnover shots(it's at the bottom of lake now ).

Also a side note. I throw a lot of max weight because I support local business. Unfortunately until this year they didn't give too many options on molds and weights. That's changed. And I'm ready to buy new plastic at appropriate weights again.

Sounds like you've made a lot of great improvements. Maybe try a couple of other 9 speed discs out. They will still be a good bit south of the 12 speed Destroyer and might fit better at the moment.

So I'm coming back from an injury (crashed my bike and hurt my achilles' tendon), and I've lost some of my timing. So the bigger rimmed drivers are out for me for the time being. The fastest thing in my bag is now an OLF, as I've taken out my Flows/Swords.

So in the bag now I've got:

GL River/TP Underworld for control and turnovers, a range of TBs as main drivers, an OLS for something long that has less fade, and a range of OLFs for longer drives.

I developed my game throwing putters and Comets, so I'll throw an Ion or Buzzz or Comet on any hole that allows it. I tend to throw the slowest speed I can any way, so discing down is just part of my game and it's not hard to get rid of the bigger rimmed drivers. I would only use them on holes north of 425' any way, and I wasn't parking them as it was...

Mainly just focusing on TBs these days. I got a super sweet, super gummy, flat 150g champ TB that I love. It goes almost as far as those Flows and Swords when I connect. Traded for a nicely seasoned lighter (162g marked) Star TB too. I've got a solid stack of them for the practice field and the course.

At this point, I'm most confident with the TB. When I feel like I need something more than them and the OLFs, I'll consider something above speed 9. As it is, my game's pretty much unchanged even without the faster stuff. The only thing I'm considering is getting a new champ Sidewinder and putting my old beat one back in the bag to fill the OLS's role. It's not as understable as I think I might need.
