Played an icy round at Hudson Mills OG from the longs:

3 Destroyers
Trace

Scepter
2 Volts
Pekapeka
Gazelle
Leopard

2 Kotuku
Piwakawaka

Ruin
Envy
2 Atoms

I'm liking the Gazelle less as I use it at more courses. It doesn't power up or forehand as smoothly as I was hoping, so I may bump up in speed or just use the Volt for those shots to reduce molds. Still loving the Leopard, though! I'm also loving my g-star Destroyer for forehands. As a resolution, I told myself I'm going to forehand neutral–understable discs and this thing goes really far forehand and backhand.

Independence shorts:

VIP Giant
Fuzion Trespass
Trace

Scepter
2 Volts
Pekapeka
Leopard

2 Kotuku
Fuse

Ruin
Envy
SS Omega
2 Atoms

Some changes to the bag– I was always a little dissapointed with the Destroyers I had...they seemed to want to fight to the ground, even the straighter ones seemed glideless at the end of the flight. Picked up a used VIP Giant and love it. Feels great in the hand and seems to have a more forward flight.

Lost my star Leopard today....if anyone has a replacement, hmu

I've been reaching for my Atoms more and more for putter shots, so the Envy doesn't see a lot of flight. I'm going to try out Ruin, proton Atom, 2 soft Atoms, and an Omega for putters. I have a beat up 168g SS Omega and it's gold. Trying it back out.

I also swapped out the Piwak for a Fuse. The Piwak is a little too US for what I'm looking for and doesn't handle wind well. Fuse seems a little more reliable and it's much straighter for me. Love it on first throw.

Played a quick 9-holes at Bandamer today with my e Envy and atomic Kotuku (to break it in). I've been throwing the Envy a lot more over the Atom, so I'm thinking Atoms will just be for putting, Envy for throwing.

I worked on slowing down and being smooth and (lo and behold) I was much more accurate because of it. Went out this weekend with the full bag and struggled– still shot okay, but my distance drivers were only hitting 360 max when I'm used to getting closer to 4. Slowed down the form and just played smooth and it worked. Looking forward to getting out to a longer course next time.

Trying out the Runway/Hex/Fuse combo for my mid set up. The Kotukus I'm trying to cycle fly well *most* of the time, but I feel like when I really rip on them especially in baseline, they don't handle the power as well as the Hex does. Even the premium Kotukus that are quite OS feel off when I put a lot into them. The Runway also forehands much much better than the Kotukus do for OS utility shots.

I also think I'm getting rid of the speed 6 slot. As my e Volt beats in, it's becoming really controllable for the 330 range and I can just power it down (or even power up the Hex if it stays in my bag) for the same outcome.

Also did a quick 1 disc round with the Magic since it was in my car when I stopped on the way home from work one day and found it much more comfortable in the hand for putting than the Atoms. So for now, it's staying in the bag.

So my bag changed again pretty drastically....because I can't commit to anything for too long

2 Emperors (s-blend, i blend)
2 Worlds (moonshine, VIP)
Giant (VIP)
Grym X (K1)

Neutron Terra
Proton Volt
Electron Volt
Cosmic Pekapeka

Neutron Runway
Neutron Hex
Alpha Harpoon
2 Shamans (HD, ss)

JK Aviar-X
2 DX Aviar P&A

–The Destroyers I had weren't working out (a lot less glide than I hoped for) and I saw that my local shop had some Worlds in stock. I LOVED the World back in the day and picked up two to throw. The Emperors are also great for a little bit straighter and have a similar enough hand feel with lots of glide. I'm trying out the Giant and Grym X, but Emperors and Worlds are the core.

–Swapped out the Scepter for the Terra. It glides better and feels more similar to my Volts. I lost the Leopard I had a while back and was too lazy to replace it. The Hex goes almost as far and the Electron Volt is beating in to handle that range pretty well.

–I commented how the RPM mids were flying similar to the Hex/Runway, but I could get the MVP molds out much more consistently and confidently, so I switched back

–There wasn't an understable mid I loved and after some field work, I found that the Shamans went as far as the mids on a similar line and I like the hand feel better, so they're in. The Harpoon replaced the Envy since it's more versatile. Powered down, it's more OS than an Envy and powered up it flies very similarly. A surprisingly shapeable disc!

–The one thing I've been hearing from a lot of the modern putters is "Wow, they go so far! Almost as far as my mids!", which is great, but that left a gap in my game below mids. I've done a lot of field work with the Aviars recently and I'm really really liking this set up. I have one Aviar P&A for putting and one for throwing. The JK is a great compliment that doesn't go as far as the Harpoon or Shamans (or Envy, for that matter), but I really like the gap it fills. I can throw it comfortably up to about 260 before I have to start mashing on it, which is exactly the range I want a putter to be in.

Here we are with another big bag change...I was getting tired of not finding any other newer brands in stores and having a hard time replacing lost discs/finding back ups, so I ditched everything and went to a classic Innova bag. It was getting to be a problem that I was always looking for a new unique mold from a new manufacturer to try out so I thought why not stick to the tried and true classics...

1x Star Boss (166)– open field bomber, side arms
3x Star/Pro Wraith (172, 171, 168)– general distance drives

2x Star/Champ Valkyrie (max weight)– controlled distance, one is more os
1x Champ Firebird (167)– firebird things

3x Star/Champ Teebird (175, 150)– fairway drivers from os to us

1x Star Gator (175)– shorter firebird things
4x Champ/KC/DX Roc (180-175)– various stages of wear from os to us

2x JK Aviar (175, 172)– general putter shots
3x DX Aviar P&A (max weight)– putting and US upshots

Condensing it down: Boss, Wraith, Valkyrie, Firebird, Teebird, Gator, Roc, Aviar

I'm playing around with slots right now so the Boss or Gator might go, but for now I'm happy with the 7 molds I'm throwing. It's helped my technique to learn the Rocs and Aviars and having common molds makes it really easy to find replacements everywhere.

Watching some tournament coverage made me realize I wasn't fully extending back and after a little bit of field work, I added consistency and distance to my game....go figure, watching pros can give you good technique ideas.

Kicked out the two 150 class Teebirds after my modified technique for either a TL or Leopard3 (doing some field work to figure it out). I also picked up a 1.1 Helio Quasar (which is just a Boss) and it bombs! Slightly modified bag:

2 Bosses/Quasar
3 Wraiths
2 Firebirds

2 Valkyrie
2 Teebirds
1 TL/Leopard3

3 Rocs
2 JK Aviar
3 Aviar P&A

I've done a lot of work on my form thanks to the feedback of some kind DGCR folk and have made a few changes to accommodate.

–I was trying bosses out and I like them, but I'd rather have a similar flight in a disc that feels better in the hand

–Replaced the Bosses with Destroyers

–Valkyries when thrown with good form and snap for me are a little too understable for what I'm looking for. Still working on that slot and trying out some things, but I found a used Phantom Sword and I really like it. Trying out one of those in the control slot plus a Valkyrie

–Local store has some new Kastaplast and I wanted to try a Stål in the overstable control slot, but I ended up liking it more than Firebirds for that slot, so I'm trying that out

–Local store also got TSA in for the first time and I fell in love with a Pathfinder. Throwing a Pathfinder and Roc for mids and they compliment each other quite well

–Aviars are great, but I wanted to find a putter that I liked in both premium and baseline plastic. Picked up a K3 and K1 Reko and I'm sold. They remind me a lot of the Aviar P&A, but the K3 molds up the same depth vs the Aviar that molds WAY too deep for me in Champion

–Trying various OS putter/approach discs. All in the bag for now, but will whittle down as I go

Drivers:
Rive / 2 Destroyers / 2 Wraiths

Control Drivers:
Phantom Sword / Valkyrie / Stål / Firebird

Fairways:
2 Teebirds / Leopard3

Mids:
Jarn / Pathfinder / DX Roc

Putters:
Harp / Devilhawk / 3 Rekos

As I'm pairing down molds and trying things and dialing in what kinds of flights I'm going for, my bag is still changing, but getting closer. I've been finding that I really like European plastic, so I'm integrating some Trilogy and Kastaplast in the bag.

Updated bag for now:

Distance drivers:
Rive / GrymX / Destroyer / Wraith

Control drivers:
2x Construct / Stål

Fairway drivers:
Bear / Leopard3

Midranges:
Järn / Pathfinder / 2x Roc

Putters:
Harp / Berg / 3x Reko

Like the current bag. For 4 distance driver molds those 4 can compliment each other well. Sure you can find Destroyers and Rives (or GrymX when good stable ones were still a plenty) that fill each others spots, but if you have ones that fit what you want all the better.

Is the Construct almost thundy stable new? I have heard great things, and love the slot they fill.
Also heard great things about the Bear.

It's been a while since I've been on the forum, sorry for just seeing this now.

Thanks– I need to spend some time doing field work with my distance drivers. I got out for a round twice this week since we had good weather and I'm realizing I just need to work with them more. The Grym and Grym X can get a little squirelly on me in the wind, so I just need to figure out the angles I can and can't throw them on.

The Construct is a straight Thunderbird for me. The ethos will flip up to flat and ride straight with a not-so-aggressive (but reliable) fade. The aura is almost a different mold (and I knew that going in) that reminds me a lot of a Valkyrie. The combination of the two is really great.

The Bear is a mold that does exactly what I think it will every time. It's hard to compare it exactly, but I think it's like a TB3. Faster than a TB and a touch straighter, but definitely still in the OS category. Plus it feels better in my hand!

As it's getting nicer out and I'm able to throw more, I've been making some small changes to the bag, but not so drastic like before...

For my birthday, my dad got me a '22 KT Orbit Grace and an Orbit Ballista Pro on a whim (he'll casually text me "What brands are you throwing now adays?", which is really nice) and I've really fallen in love with them.

The Grace kicked the Wraith and GrymX out of the bag, and the Ballista Pro kicked the Destroyer out of the bag. I also saw a domey Erika Sword in the used bin and it flies really great for me (and I really like Westside molds/lore). As these discs break in, I can see myself using just Rives and Graces, but as they're new, each of the 4 flies differently enough.

I also decided to give the Piwakwaka another throw as a tool to help my form, and I found that I'm getting more consistent results with it over my beat in DX Rocs. The Berg is great, but 9/10 times, I'd rather throw my K3 Reko.

Within the past few months since it's been warm, I took the Rocs out to the field for some practice and they were flying really well for me. So they're back in the bag for the summer. The KCs especially feel much better when it's not frigid out.

Narrowing down the drivers, I tried a Ballista to compliment the Pro and it's certainly staying. I also started throwing a stock Grace to compliment the KT Orbit one I originally had.

The Järn was a little overstable for what I was hoping for, and I was recommended a Wasp by a kind dgcr user to compliment Rocs and it's perfect.

I have a feeling this is where my bag will stay for a while. I went into my local shop and wasn't tempted by anything, which is a good sign.

Not a whole lot to report, but giving myself regular check ins is good for me!

I was playing around with the Teebird again. I'm finding that Teebirds are more controllable than the Bear for the distances I usually throw fairways. I have a VIP Bear and two Star Teebirds, the Bear functioning more as a sidearm and more open-fairway disc.

At my local course, there are a few short flat to slightly downhill shots that the Reko and Harp glide right over. This is partly on me, but the discs seem to keep flying past the target. I'm trying a Rhyno in place of the Harp with good results so far. Super easy to control, and doesn't glide too far. I know the Berg is sort of the king for this, but the Rhyno fits better in my hand.

As I'm working on form, I'm starting to cut molds and tweak things here and there:

– Dropped the Bear, only throwing Teebirds and Leopard3s now
– Dropped the Ballista in favor of a Destroyer. It might kick out the Ballista Pro as well
– Dropped the Construct for a Thunderbird. I've been gravitating toward Innova plastic recently and the THB is a little bit more reliable in the wind. The Construct is a great mold, but was a little squirelly for me sometimes.

Pairing things down a little more, and gravitating more toward Innova molds. Nothing too drastic, but:

– Stål is out for the Firebird
– I won a PFN x-out Valkyrie for less than $2 in auction and fell in love with it
– Added a Star Jay. I love the flight of the DX Rocs when they're a little broken in, but wanted the longevity of premium plastic. The Jay is a really great mold. I heard it's more or less a
microbead Mako3, which makes for a smooth straight flier
– Dropped the Ballista Pro. Redundancy with the Destroyer

This post is a little long and ranty, but I figured if there's anywhere to put a long and ranty disc golf post, it's here. There will be a TL;DR at the end.

As the year is winding down (I know there's a lot of good golf left, but being a full time doctorate student and working, I don't have much time to play during the school year), I'm looking to try some new molds as I narrow down the bag more and more. I know over the course of the year, there have been a lot of changes, but it's been a lot of figuring out what I like, form changes, and narrowing down rather than trying new molds every week and seeing what sticks.

I'm hoping to try new molds in the off season, throw them a bunch in the winter and spring, and hopefully have a core bag ready to go by time summer hits.

The changes:

–I really like the Rekos a lot for putting and driving, however, I'm realizing they may not be perfect for me. I love that they mold up very similarly in base and premium plastic, but the premium is just a little too OS for the shot I'm looking for (it almost overlaps with my R-Pro Rhyno) and the baseline for throwing I haven't quite figured out. I love it on some shots, but it's a little touchy on flat releases for me that I want to go right. For putting, I like them more, so I think they might stay for that. I found a neutron Proxy in my bin that I aced with a while back and decided to give it a throw. It's more similar to my baseline Rekos in that it's a little straighter and not as dumpy, but it's more workable as far as angles go. I know when I put it out flat, it'll stay flat or drift a little to the right. On hyzer, it'll hold the hyzer. There's less guessing for me.

I realized I miss having a true understable putter that doesn't need breaking in. Not to get too in the weeds on flight numbers, but the 0/1 of the Reko kicks in a little more than I'm looking for in that slot. I have an old 1.16 SS Omega that flies like a dream. I found it in a used bin tacoed and warped and it's incredible. I'm looking for something that flies like that– dead straight/slightly US and floaty– but new. I'm not loving the new SS plastic, and don't have the patience to break a new Omega in that much. Some options I've been looking at for something I can throw with a little hyzer and flip up or slight over are the Xero, Pa4, Magic, and Shaman. I know the Pure is popular for this kind of deadstraight/hyzerflip putter, but maybe a little too much side-to-side motion (though I haven't thrown one in a long time). I feel like the Pure or Shaman would be good to replace the Proxy with too, so I could throw one in premium and one in baseline (for mold reduction). While I do have to put the Rekos on a little hyzer, I'm finding it hard to predict: a little too much hyzer and they don't want to flip up all the way, a little too flat and they turn too much. Probably user error, but different discs for different people, right?

–I want to lean in a little more on my straight-understable discs, and the Thunderbird is a little too OS for what I'm looking for. I was thinking the Aztec or Dynasty from Infinite would be good fits for this slot. I need to play around with the speed 9-10-11 slots because there is some overlap with the Graces, Destroyers, and other control drivers (like at the beginning of this year when I tested out the Construct). I've been loving the Valkyrie, so a slightly more OS compliment to that is what I'm going for.

–The last main slot I'm looking to try out is the understable mid slot. I keep going back and forth on DX Rocs. I love them and they fly wonderfully. The DX one that I've had in the bag for a season or two now is beating into a great hyzerflip/turnover disc, but I don't know if I want to keep cycling DX Rocs, or just throw a few different molds that work better in premium plastic. I've been liking the Wasp in the overstable slot and the Jay is similar to a new DX Roc that will keep longer. I've thrown the Piwakawaka from RPM discs in the past and it's a glidey, sneaky-long Comet-esque disc that is very close to what I'm looking for. Might pick one up in their Cosmic plastic which I heard is a little more stable than the one's I've tried in the past. I'd definitely hear other options for slightly understable mids that might fit the bill. I've throw Mako3s before, and they're more Buzzz-ish than truly understable or dead-straight. I'm looking more in the Comet/Piwak/Fuse category of mids rather than the Mako3/M4 category.

The off season will be testing a lot of new discs against the ones I currently have. I'm not necessarily disliking the discs I'm currently throwing, but I want to see all what is out there that's similar so I can find the best fit for me! When I took a big step back to simplify my bag to Aviars, Rocs, Teebirds, and Leopards, I wanted to force myself to learn classic discs that have worked for pros and ams the past 30 years because they're tried and true, and they're all great learning discs. I'm glad I did, but as I figure out my own game better, I'm branching out.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading my ramblings!

TL;DR- testing out some new molds going into winter. Looking for suggestions on a dead-straight to slightly understable putter, slightly understable midrange, and a slightly overstable control driver. Also trying to narrow down the control driver slot (speeds 9-10-11).

Dynasty is worth checking out but it takes a few rounds to work it in at least in I-Blend. It'll probably slot right between your Valkyrie and Thunderbird but tbh you could just get different weights/plastics of those discs and get similar results.

I've got a friend who has an MVP Spin he pairs with a Mirage for his US putters. I use a Sol in that slot and it kinda covers both US putter and US mid for me.

Way back when, I got an X-out CE Valkyrie that was beefy. Shouldn't have sold it, but hindsight is always 20/20. Are Pro Thunderbirds fairly easy to find? And do you know which runs/plastics of Valkyries might be a little more OS? The one I have is 171g champion and a fair bit older, so a brand new max weight Champ one might do the trick.

I would suggest the Orion LF in Millenium Standard plastic vs a Pro Thunderbird. Orion LF has a bit more glide and a bit straighter with a nice drifty finish, probably between a standard Thunderbird and Valkyrie. Thunderbirds need a little beating in before the glide kicks in.

My K1 Rekos are dead straight (with a slight finish if I give them height), and the K3s fly a little more OS, but beat in faster. I think you may have gotten a mutant for your premium plastic Reko.

A K1 Svea might be a good slightly US mid for you if you don't mind dome (dome is king). The svea has been compared to a Fuse in the past. Also if you pick up a K3, they get real US and can do some hard turnovers that you don't want to fade out. K3 is my US utility disc.
