When I play a tournament, I no longer pay the extra $ for the ace pool. I never hit the ace & I got sick of always paying for somebody else to hit a lucky shot. If I do hit another ace (I've got one so far) I will be happy with the shot.
Beyond the 'ACE POOL', around here, people expect to be paid if you are present when they hit an ace (or chains or metal). It's called '521'. At first it seemed OK. Yeah, you made a hole in one. Pretty cool. I can give you some cash for that. What? I have to give you $5.00? Or $2.00 for chains or a buck for metal? Just because I was there?
Lately, it seems like I am always paying out cash for aces/metal, etc. I'm sick of it! Cant people just be happy with the great shot? I know I would be. I've only had one ace. It was over 4 years ago. When I hit my ace, nobody ponied up any cash for me.
I play with guys who hit an ace almost every time they play. Most times they at least hit metal or chains. This can get expensive! For those that know about '521' (me), you get guilted into paying. For those that dont know about it, they walk away with a full wallet.
Examples:
1) We're playing a 2 round tourney & one of the guys in my group hits 2 aces & 4 metal/chain hits. I had to pay him $16.00. I'm not sure how many of the others in the group paid. He was working us all during the rest of the round about '521'.
2) I'm playing a round with some friends. One of the guys hits an ace. Bang, he's on me in the parking lot. "Hey man, you got that $5.00 for me right?". This guys done this twice with me. Others in the group were harrassed into paying as well. I dont know if they actually paid or not. Some escaped out the side exit maybe?
3) I'm playing a round of doubles & one of the guys in my group hits metal on one basket & then aces another. Later he says to me: hey, '521'? I remind him that I had also hit chains one time during the round so that's a two dollar push. I then say I "dont have the other $4.00 on me right now", hoping to skate out of this crap. My partner & I end up in a tie with them & we have a playoff for 3rd place. We win the CTP & my share is $4.00. Cool, at least I made some money back. Perfect! Up walks my 'ace buddy'. Hey dude. It looks like you can pay me now:D. The crapper here is that my partner was a noob & didnt know about '521' so he walks away free.
4) I'm in a group during casual play. My buddy hits an ace. I did not see or even hear it. Yet here he comes with his hand out. Hey man, I didnt even get to see it & I still have to pay you $5.00. That's crap!

How do you get out of paying? Or does everybody just pay & I'm a tight wad?

Don't bring any cash to the course. Give them a paper that says "I-O-U". Also, the one time you don't pay at the tournament , you will hit the ace. I have seen it happen to several people.

I would say something along the lines of "go eff yourself"

I never buy in on the ace or extra ctps. I am more realistic.

If I hit an ace, I would be happy...screw the money, I didn't start playing disc golf to make money.

'521' or '51' (around here the $2 for chains isn't acknowledged) is an informal tradition. No one should ever be required to participate in it, and its kind of douchebaggy to expect people to pony up, but if you ever have people offer you money when you hit one, be sure and return the favor when you witness one.

Me too. Another thing to consider is that if no one aces, part or all of the ace fund is often doled out through a CTP. While I've never hit a tourney ace, I've gotten some cash back on those throw offs on three occasions.

I've never played "521" and think it is pretty lame that somebody expects that from you. Hey, great shot, but you don't deserve money over it.

I'd maybe bring it up before the round starts and just say, "hey, I'm not playing 521, so if you hit an ace, I'm not paying you. If I hit an ace, I don't expect anything."

I only pay for aces. $5
sounds like too many aces going on around there- maybe a harder course is in order.
I know it's 51 but I will not pay for metal- that's weak

I only have a standing "bet" with one buddy that states $10 for an ace and a buck for metal or chains. This is only acknowledged if we are playing in the same tourney or together in a casual round. I have only paid him $1 so far (1 year of playing) and he has paid me nothing. Hmmmm....we suck!!! I don't think I will be shelling out cash for other people when the "bet" or agreement is not laid out in advance. I also don't expect others to pay me. I am a gambling man, but all terms and conditions are laid out in advance and nothing is 'understood' unless it is stated.

For tournaments I always pay in for the acepool. I figure the extra happiness for one of my DG brothers is worth a buck even if I never hit another (I have hit several although I did not enter the pool when I got my very first ace).

I do not participate in the 521 or 531 thing. I usually pony up $5 for an ace if the person wants it (I did that maybe 3-4 times in the last 7-8 years). The custom where I was from was that all witnesses signed the disc.....and that was the end of it. IMO, that signature is much more meaningful as soon as the $5 is spent.

I have played what you call "521" before but it was specified BEFORE the 1st disc of the round was thrown. If somebody I was playing with didn't say anything before the round started, and still expected me to pay them for an ace, I would tell them to F**k off!!!

Btw, my friends and I call this "dirty dollars" b/c we all throw $1 on the ground before every hole... and we play $3 for chains.

I've never heard of paying for chains and metal hits. That just seems lame to me. But I agree with scarpfish. It should never be expected that everyone has to participate.

If I'm playing a course where there's a chance I can get an ace, I put in my dollar for the ace pot. Because, you just never know.

My thought on this tradition of "5", "51" or "521" is that it should be null and void where there is an ace pot up for grabs. If I get an ace, I've essentially collected money from everyone who has participated. There shouldn't be an expectation that those who have put in their dollar for the ace pot have to then pay again just because they're on the same card as me. And I still don't expect that those who didn't put in for the ace pot should have to pay up either. They just chose not to take the gamble. If they hit the ace but didn't take the chance, it's their loss.

Here's another twist on it that I've heard, albeit not often. If you are in a paid ace pot and you hit an ace, you pay your card mates $5/each out of your winnings instead of the other way around.

around here we usually always have some kind of split on the ace depending how high the pot is like if it is 250 ace pot we will say before we start 20 dollar split and who hits it pays the card

Since most of the guys I play with have never hit an ace, we all have the agreement that is one of out friends gets an ace, well will buy him lunch at his favorite fast food joint.

One of the guys on the local boards sig states that only firemen and strippers get paid to hit the pole.

I like that.
