I hate when I go to my local course with my buddy and encounter the groups of like a dozen or so people. I mean sure you can play through but there is definitely etiquette on how large of a group you should have. These large groups are almost always people who seem not to even enjoy the sport. Let me get your opinions guys... imo I'd say 5 people is a good number, a group of that size can still flow through a hole pretty quickly if they're considerate.

Personally I don't like throwing with a group larger than four. The largest I have ever played with was eight, we had a couple friends in town from Oregon, and that was sort of a special occasion, and of course we let anyone who came up on us play through.

i think it depends on what game you are playing.

i wouldn't want to play with more than 5-6 people in singles. maybe 8 with doubles, or more if it's a game of wolf. it also depends on how casual the round is. with more than 5 or 6, i'm not gonna wait to walk past people who are throwing.

and this is only with friends. i wouldn't play in groups that large with strangers.

I say 8 people. A nice 4 team doubles game is usually more competitive than say 6. Does make for a longer game -- 2.5 to 3 hours in my experience -- but that's quite all right by me:thmbup:

It depends on the circumstances when my wife and her friends go Its a large group last time it was nine with two five and under kids. We went to a beginers course and let people play through, There are certain courses in cincy where you kinda expect waits and large groups if you dont want to encounter these then you should hit up one of the harder courses that are less populated.

I'd say proper etiquette is 4 max, just like ball golf. Maybe one extra but no more than that.

I laugh when I see huge groups of 8. Why can't you just split up into 2 groups of 4? You can still see and talk to each other on the next pad and what not and when you get home for dinner. Are you out there to play disc golf or dick around and play panzy wanzy. Groups of 8 just look like kiddie golf and in my opinion embarrass the sport.

It's even worse when I see huge groups of 8 at a little 9-holer pitch N putt course, and each guy is carrying a tour bag full of 20 discs LOL. You gotta be kidding me people.

Plus, it all depends on how much traffic there is at the course. If you're the only guys out there, then who cares. But if there's tons of traffic, groups of 8 are just flat out rude and disrespectful to those behind you. Not to mention how silly you look...

If playing doubles, you can still split into 2 groups of 4, if the traffic is heavy.

I pretty much agree with everything here ^^^^

5 is fine by me, 6 is stretching it -- but if it's a bunch of younger kids that play relatively fast it's not too bad, 7 is out of hand, 8 is ridiculous, 9+ you deserve punishment by Star Boss.

The biggest thing is letting people play through... and if you have 6+ you better be letting someone play through damn near every hole.

I don't like this poll.

The thread was named: "How many people is considered too large of a group?"

and the poll question was "What should the largest dg group be at a course?"

This is not the same question. I voted replying to the thread topic question with an answer of 6, which I think is when a group is considered too large, 5 is understandable but not desired. The answer I would give for what I think should be the largest is 4.

I don't mind seeing groups up to about 6, once you get past that it gets a little ridiculous. That said, as long as you're letting me play through when I catch up to you and your 17 buddies, I don't care all that much, but I'm sure not going to play with a group that size.

I've been part of some fairly large groups with some poor players, yet we keep pace with groups half our size by playing ready golf, get to the disc and throw it. Don't wait for others, cause you will be spread a bit so you just keep moving.

That being said we also let small groups that we are holding back play through. But if I am in a group of 8 and keeping up with the foursome ahead of us (and considering asking to play through) we will not be letting someone play through us, since we are not the cause of the slowdown. They'll be waiting at the next hole same as us.

I only golf in massive 20 people mobs, not playing doubles.

I'm kidding of course. Our groups are as many as 12-14. Always play doubles. Almost always for money ($1-$2-$5). We play EVERY day. Have played for MANY years like this. Also 98% of the time, we play only the back-nine. We always let others roll thru, even if after, we stopped you for one hole. This particular group I play with happen to do trash/construction/river management details. We feel somewhat entitled.

I think there are too many variables to have one set answer. We played yesterday afternoon with 7, took our time, and stopped every now and again to mix some more drinks. While on most courses this would be unacceptable, on my home course there was not a single other person playing yesterday so there was no one to hold up.

If the group is letting others play through, there is no such thing as too large of a group.

I played through a 10-some once. They caught me soon after. 10 play pretty fast when they're unconcerned about who's away. A lot of discs in the air at the same time.

I believe that anything over 5 is unreasonable at the course on a casual day, with 5 you have pretty good movement around the entire course, i also hate twosomes and people who are playing alone that won't play through because they end up really holding things up.

5. If it's more than 5 break up into 2 groups of 3 and meet up after 9 holes and reorganize the groups.

If the group is letting others play through, there is no such thing as too large of a group.

Here is the nub of the matter.
The goup is too large only when they don't let you play through.
Otherwise, who cares??

I've played occasionally in groups as large as eight, but we were keeping watch to amke sure that we didn't hold anyone up.

I voted 6, but I think if you have six you should be playing dubs. I think 5 if playing singles. And since you all love to do what the PDGA tells you to so much (see DROT threads) I'm surprised there aren't more votes for 5.
