DFW disc golf

Bump to remind all DFW players to come hit Bear Creek one last time.

The entire course will be closed September 5th. Signs are posted by holes 1 and 3, even though I didn't think the area on that side of the parking lot was supposed to be effected.

yep the city lied and swept the rug out from underneath the bc community!:wall:

That's going to to be one big f-n dog park to have to take up all 18 holes...

Got my regular discin' buddy to come down from McKinney for a 'farewell' trip around Bear Creek (maybe twice) on Saturday morning around 9am. If you see a guy with a blue Grip and a stool that keeps hitting a bunch of trees, come say Hi and we can 'share' a moment of reflection "on de left-hand side"

I've had local courses pulled before, but have never even heard of one so popular with no crime, pedestrian or erosion issues getting yanked. It doesn't matter when I am out there, Bear Creek has players on it, and it is about the only 18-holer I've found in DFW that can be enjoyable for most every skill levels.

This already sucked, but it just got worse without even keeping the 'original' 13. Anyone know why they decided not to keep those holes (that were NOT on the renovated park plan that was linked many pages ago?

i think the city has wanted to get rid of the course for a long time. i'd heard they had threatened to do so many times after incidences of people getting caught with alcohol or drugs on the course. i've heard stories of plainclothes cops appearing out of the bushes to bust people. seems there is a certain perception about the course and perhaps the sport by the city council.

It won't take long before they miss the disc golfers. Good guy eyes in the parks are valuable.

we can only hope. i wish they would realize it now.

I live about 5 minutes from Bear Creek and am definitly sad to to lose such a fun course thats so close.

While I agree these common issues weren't a problem for BCDGC, the course always seemed to have WAY TOO MUCH TRASH. Ive seen potheads at many course but rarely do I see parks with so much litter. It's far too common at bear creek to walk a few feet past one of the numerous trash cans and see water bottles and beer cans strewn about the tee area:mad:.
I'm sure the town had plenty of non-dg reasons to cut the course but I have to wonder if the constant trash levels were part of the argument against the course. Probably not- but maybe. If so it was a factor in the decision that could have been totaly avoided.
Lately Ive started carrying a grocery bag with me when I play so I can pick up trash through the round to help do my part and I hope that small actions like that by our community can help preserve the courses we have.

Also, Does anyone know what will be done with the baskets? There are a couple other non-dg parks in Grapevine/ Euless that could make a new home so I'm hopefull they keep the baskets close.

True the trash levels are bad, especially for a course with lots of cans, but it is f'n pristine compared to BB Owen or some other courses (besides Harry Myers probably) that get as much traffic.

As far as playability for beginners, I've only played North Park once but it presented a decent challenge for a 45- year old casual player with 12 years experience. Not sure what Ash Creek is better known as since i have played most every 18-holer in DFW, but agree Beaver is another 'fun' course and a newbie might play well enough there to come back again.

I've only been playing Bear Creek for about 4 years, but it is the only course that I can get a full round in and be back home to Irving within 90 minutes early on the weekends. Turner and Fritz are close but man, that's a lot of time-consuming walking between holes.

Has there been any follow-up abut that temp course in Euless that the Funky Town Flyers set up about a month or more ago? I understand it was less than 2 miles or so from Bear Creek.

We're showing up at 7:30 since the mini starts at 10:00 and we don't want to get caught up in that.

Wait, what? Whas the temp course called?

The city of Euless has once again expressed an interest in hosting a disc golf course in their wonderful town. Funkytown Flyers Disc Golf has partnered with Rex Arm to provide another custom course installation, so the city can observe what a fully functioning disc golf course looks like at the Villages of Bear Creek Park. This is our opportunity to put our best foot forward, and share with them the joy and fellowship that accompanies disc golf and it's host communities. The $20 fee covers tournament entry and greens fee for the day. Professional divisions will play for cash, Am payout will be in merchandise. We will accommodate divisions upon request. Please use this event page to secure a tee time, we will keep a list updated daily. This is your opportunity to play with the group of your choosing. If you are unable to gather a group, we will partner you with others. Please indicate in your response if you are playing solo. We look forward to seeing you then!!

We got "another" farewell B.C. round in on Labor Day that I didn't expect to be able to play. Nice, relatively cool morning with little wind. Fortunately I played well (for me) and carded a par with three birds and three bogeys. Another of many good memories.

RIP... Bear Creek

You were loved by everyone but the city leaders in Grapevine.
Sad but true, and such a shame. I'm really going to miss that course. So many good memories over the past couple decades.

Plus it had some really unique holes, unlike any I've found in DFW. Hole 12 was one of a kind, and 6 in the long position had you happy with a 3. Drainage kinda sucked, but that creek could really cause some back-side puckering when your drive deflected off a tree toward the drop off.
<sigh> Took me a year to finally play Bear Creek after I had moved back here, but I played it about once a month since then. Had my closest ace run in about 5 years on #4 last month, missed the top of the bucket by about a millimeter. Never did get one out there, now I never will...(single tear falls)

Ok, got an unusual one here concerning Bear Creek. I came across this on the r/discgolf subredit
https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/comments/6ycc7k/rip_bear_creek/?st=J7G7GQE8&sh=e09a2f65
Basically he decided the tee signs were going to get chunked by the city and went and got all of them. A few of us berated him for taking them instead of letting the local club leaders get them. He seems willing to talk to someone about it, if someone can contact him. He's convinced there was no plan for them and that they'd have just been destroyed. He may be correct there, I don't know. But anyway, he has them, and if anyone that was in leadership in the local club wants to talk to him, there you go.

Addendum to my last post:

He's given some out to some other locals that have been there long time. He's open getting with the local club if they want to contact him. I think he was really concerned they were going to be destroyed by the city. The way his post started it sounded like he was just hoarding them all for himself, but that doesn't seem the case.

I actually grabbed my keys and was heading to get my bag for a quick round Bear Creek before I remembered ...

So long old buddy <cue Time of Your Life by Green Day>
