Carry Ion AND Wizard or...

I love throwing my Ion as an approach disc and never thrown anything so precise for that role and used it for putting for a while but, I have recently gone back to the SSS Wizard for putting which feels more like SS since its tacky and doesnt seem to slide on the ground so far.

So, should I keep the Ion for approach and driving and just use the Wizard or is there a disc that would be as tacky as a SS Wizard yet fly like my Ion that I should try?

well, my rule of thumb is: when i have two discs that i really like, keep both. if space in your bag isn't an issue, why try to fix something that isn't broken?

Yeah, I just get torn between minimalism and my love for the Ion on those approach shots.

I have the same problem. I love my Ions for driving and approach, but I just can't seem to get the putts working with it like my SSS Wizard. I think disc minimalism shouldn't be a worry in this case, if you're just using the Wiz for putting.

Pretty much just using the Wizard for putting. Although; I had been using my Core, underpowered when I needed a fade the Ion doesnt have, but now; I will pull the Wizard for that.

Carry both. I thought disc minimalism was more for approach/drives, having a seperate mold just for putting is aight. Although the reason I put off bringing back my Wiz and the reason I will likely go back to putting with the Ion is because of minimalism. I like the sound of 4-5 molds.

i carry a couple of both. eraser and organic wizards and a soft and medium ion. cant beat the tack of the wizards and the ions are just the poop to drive and approach with.

yeah keep both.

Wow! Seems I am not the only one that uses that exact combo. Wonder if MVP will ever maybe do a tackier plastic on an Ion.

its funny how, now that time and the dust has settled, the ion has settled into a Driver and Approach disc (and not quite a true putter).

I got both in my bag. Use the SSS for 25 and under and the ION for the approach.

I carry both and switch depending on how I am feeling. I've nailed a few long putts with ion recently and drives are killer with the wiz!

Same set up here. I also carry a Glo Wizard for some drives. It handles headwinds a little better than the Ion for me.

Carrying two putter molds isn't a bad idea. A lot of putters that work well for driving don't work as well for others for putting.

I'm curious how you came about your preferences though. I'd expect most people to prefer the Ion for putts (Straight flight) and the Wizard for drives and approach (More stability).

If you like the flight of the Ion but prefer the Gateway Plastics (I don't blame you, what company puts out putters in such a huge variety of materials :D ) you should try out the Voodoo, as it's very similar in flight and shape to the Ion. Also, if you've never thrown a Magic, those are nice and straight, though past 250' they start to feel kind of flippy for me...which can be nice for short turnover drives...

Just use what works, as long as you only putt with a single mold it's not a big deal if you carry 2 putter molds.

the ion is too slick (both in the hand and in the chains...they like to bust out the back) to be a primary putter for me.

True. The majority of posts do seem to lean this direction.

I'm the opposition. I putt like a machine with the Ion (compared to before). I must point out that it may not be the putter, but could be my putting style. I switched to the Ion about the same moment I started push-putting. Either way... I can't change a thing. Under 30 is definitly a push with the Ion. Over 30 I'll ante or hyzer the Ion. Unless there's an extreme circumstance... which usually ends in Xtra.

i hyzer putt and my good ones hit tape-level right chains. might be more conducive to the anny/laser putting style.

I've picked up 2 more ION's recently (now in my color of choice - PINK!) and started putting with them exclusively. With the humidity here in Austin my SS Wizards were too tacky, I was missing 50% of my putts from all distances to the right. They hung onto my fingers just a bit too long and I didn't want to change form. I hated driving with the Wizards so I have a KC Aviar for hyzer drives and an extra ION for every other drive under 250ish.

Apoth, that med ION you gave me changed my game! I love throwing putters now and the rest of my midrange game has shot through the roof. Now if only I can get you to use Comets your transformation to the dark side will be complete.

You are not alone. Although I use my Wizards a lot more than the Ion. But there are certain shots, like lowish flying hyzers, that the Ion does better for me than the Wizard. I have an HPP Wizard, but I don't like it as well as the others I have, so the durability of the Ion is nice, as all of the Wizards I like to throw (S series plastics and Organic) tend to beat in a good bit, but they do still fly well.
