I've heard discs found in lakes are keepable even if there are numbers on them. I take my kayak to a local lake and find discs, and am wondering if i could keep and or sell a couple. I've always called the numbers on the back, and 7 out of 10 times they tell me to keep it, and sometimes the numbers been changed or i get no call back. But there are a couple I'd like to keep in my last haul. Just wondering what the etiquette is, I did put alot of work into a nasty arse lake to pull these things out. Would it be right to offer to sell them back to the owner for like $5? or offer to trade it to them? Just curious. Thanks.

Some people call it karma but I like to think you reap what you sow.

I call every time. Did you really find something you can't live without? Something you can't dish $12 to buy your own? In the end it's just plastic and I say you call. But that's me and I realize not everybody lives like I do.

Ok, here's a question.. if the disc found in the lake was used to get an ace.. does that ace still count even if the disc is now in the lake? Does the ace count for the new person that found the disc and the old owner loses the ace?

broke ass grad student, cant always shell out 12-15 for a disc. besides, its not like i just stumbled across it, I had to load up the kayak, take it to the lake, get in some nasty water and search around, come home and wash myself with bleach (not really).

A couple of dollars for your effort is not unheard of. $5 imho is a little high. I would make an attemp to call any # on the disc. If they say keep it it yours to do with what you want. To not try the # because you want the disc is being a dic.

That depends... what kind of disc it it? Roc or Buzzz? Buzzz is the best and Rocs suck!

There is no law.. do what you feel is ethical/right. I don't think anyone here is going to tell you to keep it and not call. Actually, strike that, there might be one or two people on here that tell you to do that.

I say if it has a number return it. If you want to give it a test fling before returning it, go ahead. You may get a finders fee, but I wouldn't demand one.

Do not go out of your way to return it. It's thier responsibility to get it from you, your only responsibility is to call.

I have returned about 20 discs to people. Just wondering what the "law" is if found in water.

In reality, the only thing that matters is your own set of values/morals regarding the matter. There are many who feel a comraderie with their fellow DG'rs(even if they don't personally know them) and consider it act of good faith in returning a disc. There are many others who follow the "Finders = Keepers" school of thought. I personally will make a reasonable attempt to return a disc provided there is a number on it. As far as your efforts in finding discs out in a pond, I have to agree with kenjiac, a couple of bucks plus postage/gas$ seems fair. I also think that the 7/10 telling you to keep it sounds about right. Not a bad ratio for your efforts IMHO.

Tim beat me to it:hfive:

be careful there Tim...you of all people know that you just opened the flood gates

i read it, but both are published. to those select few it doesnt matter what else was said; you opened it up for the potential flamewar

All of this is the truth. What if it was a broke ass grad student that threw the disc into the water in the first place? Give the numbers a call and if you don't hear back or can't reach a reasonable agreement for return then (and only then) it belongs to you. Just do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.

I did find an 11x KC Pro Teebird with no stamp on it, the only ink on it said "KC T-Bird" I guess thats teh best I can ask for. The lake is Lake Olmstead, so I guess I could ask for an Augusta Wraith. But thats about it.
