The definition is fighting itself. Allowing 2 throws from close range goes against the concept of the expected score. It reduces the accuracy of "expected score" by throwing another variable in. The most important part of the definition is "expected score", that is the core of what par means...

    Rating/review system discussion

First, I appreciate all of the work that has gone into this site. It is a great resource that consumes more of my time than I would like to admit. I use the course ratings in 2 ways currently. First, when I am travelling. It's very helpful to be able to read reviews of the courses in the area...

    A math question

Wouldn't each new target add 1/18th of a layout? I don't understand how you would get 2.5 layouts.... If you want 100% different layouts(with playing all new holes), why isn't the formula simply 2*3=6? 3 rounds from short and 3 from long with all pins in A, then all pins in B, then all in C...

    A math question

Actually, Dreadlock was right. So, 6^18 if mixed tees or 3^18 if same tees.

    A math question

18^6 = 34,012,224 only if you are playing some tees from A and some from B. 18^3 = 5,832 if you are playing the whole round from the same tees.

Yes, it is a good point. It reinforces what David already said, if par dictates how someone plays a hole they are a fool. This eliminates the "option" to play differently based on par, almost as if no par was set. To answer your question; their play would differ based on the difficulty of...

I agree with most of what you said. This is what Steve did, and answering that question was the point of my post.

In 2016, according to the data on pgatour.com, 91% of all pga players had a positive birdie/bogey(birdie or better/bogey or worse) ratio. You could say that in relation to disc golf, 91% of pga golfers are rated higher than 1,000, or did better than an expert would expect. If 91% of disc...

I would argue against this for the definition of par, though. As I said in the last post on page 116, I would say that professional golfers are beyond experts, supreme if you will. You would need a way to find how many errors expert golfers make.

Not the fact that they are shooting way under par, but that shooting way under par could just be an average round. The problem is that shooting way under par doesn't mean an exceptional round. I want par to mean something.

While we are on the discussion of golf vs disc golf scores let's think about the ratio of experts in each sport. How many experts are there in the world of golf? How many in disc golf? In golf, I view professionals as beyond experts, I would call them supreme golfers. In disc golf there are...

You make a good point here. What is the ideal scoring spread for a par 4? 6% 2s, 24% 3s, 40% 4s, 24% 5s, 6% 6s? My concern, if this was possible to achieve, is that it would limit design freedom. For every par 4 be a "true" par 4, they would need to all have the exact same difficulty. Some...

    Par Talk

I want to clarify my stance on this. I want accurate par on every course, but they all should be labeled Gold(expert is 1000 rated), Blue(expert is 950 rated), White(expert is 900 rated), or Red(expert is 850 rated). Par should be based on the skill level of the course. The definition would...

Thanks for the clarification. Yep, you can't expect one way or another with 50/50. I also agree that changing the hole, if it increases scoring spread will make it a better hole, and as a result, may increase par accuracy. Side note - My understanding of Steve's method would make this hole a...
