Pros:

A city park course that has a bit of something for everyone, Centennial Park is an obviously older course that stands decently well against other city park 9'ers even with its age.

Distances match the intended level of player for the most part. Nothing wild - all holes are under 400', but newer players will be challenged as there aren't any real gimme birdies besides hole 1.

What obstacles exist are used for challenge, Hole 2 and 3 play around a patch of brush, 7 and 8 play in some trees with solid trunks and thick branches forming a ceiling.

If they are original to the course, the baskets are in very good repair for their age. Each still shows a hole number on the DGA number puck, although some of them have been replaced over time.

Cons:

The tee signs may be some of the most useless I've ever seen. They list the hole number, but not the par or distance, and all the maps are just… weird. The only one that helped at all was hole 2 since the basket is truly blind and cant be found by just walking a few feet (like hole 3). Oh, and hole 5 doesn't have a sign.

A lot of open-air nothingburger holes. 1, 4, 5, 6, and 9 have nothing or next to nothing for obstacles.

Hole 6's sign shows an outdated map to hole 7's basket. The one you'll want is the left basket in plain view (the one on the right is 8). This clump of 6 and 8's baskets along with 7 and 9's tees all within the same 75ft could pose some risk if there's a league of some sort.

No defined tee areas. Hole 1 can tee from the sidewalk, but the rest are worn dirt patches. Not a huge issue except for Hole 3, where you can either give yourself a really tough angle off the tee by throwing next to the tee sign, or go to the other dirt patch and have an easy 230ft air shot.

Hole 2 infringes on the volleyball court and the picnic shelter, and Hole 5 goes fairly near the playground. Hole 8 will get a lot tougher if the homeowner to the north of the basket decides he wants a fenced backyard, however he seemed cool; gave me and my son a thumbs-up from his porch. Hole 1 is also parallel to the road and sidewalk. Again, it's small-town Iowa, so not wildly busy, but the danger exists all the same.

Other Thoughts:

There is potential for more quantity of holes around the baseball complex, but from the look of the land the quality would remain about the same even if the course were expanded to 12 or 15 holes.

This is a fine little stop on the way up I-35. So long as the other park functions aren't in use there's no major difficulty. Some minor issues throughout, but a fun place to run a lot of birdies.

Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Baskets OK
-Signage OK / DGA Peen N Stick (TM) (but issues, see cons)
-OK Starter Course
-A couple of blind tee shots, a few trees to work around

Cons:

-Signage has no par or distance, #5 missing, #6 directs to #7 pin
-Natural tees
-Flat
-Sand volleyball court in play on #2
-Playground in play long on #4
-Walking path in play on #5 and long on #9
-#8 basket right next to a backyard of bordering house

Other Thoughts:

Centennial Park houses a reasonable DGC in the north part of Huxley, IA. Originally on the very north edge of town, the neighborhood to the north has filled in. The course plays in the eastern part of the park around several other activities. For the most part, play stays away from these. There is a sand volleyball court along the right side of #2. There is a playground behind and right of #4, but would be a pretty errant throw to come into play. You do tee over the walking path for #5 which could come into play again on an errant long throw on #9. The other knock is on signage. The DGA "Peel n stick" (TM) are usually adequate, but here are missing par and distance. #5 is missing a sign altogether. #6 direct you to the #7 basket (#6 is pretty straight forward and slightly left). For what it is, a starter course in a city park, it is OK. There is some variation on distance. A blind tee shot for #3 with a sharp left right off the tee adds some interest. Lines on #7 make you think about the trees to work around. #8 is tucked in to the right behind a tree, so another blind tee shot. Add some concrete pads, upgrade the signage and this would be OK. No championship course, but it's not trying to be. A course I would play if it was close by, but there are a lot of other courses not too far away. I might play here again.

Waste... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beginner friendly course. Baskets are in good shape.

Cons:

Too many obstacles (playground, shelter, etc.) in the way, especially if the park is busy.

Other Thoughts:

Play is not recommended when there has been ample precipitation because it does leave standing water around a few of the holes. It seems as if the course was redone and that appears why #6 points to #7.

Not worth the time... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 30, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Besides being a beginner friendly course, not much. The signs were good...with the exception of hole 6.

Cons:

The holes are just dropped in around the park equipment that is already there, making it impossible to safely play holes that are near something that is already in use.

The course seems to retain a lot of water. It hasn't rained yet this spring, yet pretty much all of the snow has been melted for 2 weeks, yet hole 2's pin, three's tee, and four's tee were pretty swampy.

Hole 6's sign points you to hole 7's pin.

This is definitely just a pitch and putt course.

Other Thoughts:

I believe the park was redone by the time I played it. I'm not sure what other effects it had on the course, but that is the cause for hole 6's confusion I believe.

Of the nine, at least half run the risk of being unplayable. If you aren't a local to Huxley, this is definitely not a place to travel to. The only reason we played it was because we were on our way from Ankeny's course back to Ames, and I would still consider it a wasted 20 minutes.

Needs a redesign 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Baskets are in good repair

Cons:

This course is just a hodge-podge of throws where it seemed like a hole could go in amongst the ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, etc... If any one of those facilities is being used, that's at least one hole that can't be played at that time.

Other Thoughts:

The park is going to be expanded and disc golf is supposedly part of the master plan. Hopefully, there will be a reasonable amount of room for 9 holes.
