Baldfoot DGC

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baldfoot is a course that is lucky enough to have excellent terrain for a disc golf course; lots of hills, plenty of trees and variety of throws both left and right. Many lines off the pad here are very tight and accuracy is obviously more important than distance. Bad throws are punished fairly well and many times after hitting an early tree you are looking at a very well done throw to make a 3 on the hole. Hole 17 is the long hole at over 400 feet and fairly wide open with only a few trees and the trees branches to worry about.

Cons:

I played in the spring and the creek at the bottom was pretty full. A few spots in this area were brought back to the hotel with me at the end of the day in the form of dirt and mud. I didn't even notice till I took my shoes off that my socks were wet. I feel that though many of the lines are tight the course isn't as challenging as it could be and with the short distances of the course any experienced disc golfer can and probably should be well under par. It seems that the course is very popular, played it on a Sunday and there were multiple groups playing it, one as large as 10-12.

Other Thoughts:

This is fun course in Sandpoint which is a nice little town to explore. I would expect anyone playing this course to play the short 9 hole course next door as a warm up or cool down as well. Being so close to Caliber I would probably buy the seasonal pas there and play it all the time but when I wanted to have fun and throw mids and putters around to build my confidence I could see playing here if I were a local. It's worth the stop if you're going to be in town anyway.

New Branstrom 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Another Great little DGC up in the Panhandle of Idaho

Cool little Spot for Discgolf
Moderate to Heavy Coniferous Woods, with Sandy Elevation, and a couple Creeks to Navigate

Solid Design in a Confined Space. Not a Filler on the Course, well done

The available Elevation, and the Use of that Elevation for this DGC, is Excellent

1 & 18 are Esthetically Pleasing, and Excellent Discgolf Holes
Anytime I can throw a Pretty slow turning Meteor to start and finish my round with a Birdy Putt, it's Superior Course Design :D

Some other Holes also play Moderately Wooded, and add to the overall Variety out at Baldfoot
3 4 16 & 17 play generally Flat, and or allow for throwing Bigger Shots

5-13 is such a SuperFun stretch of funky Wooded Discgolf, playing versus Ridgey Terrain and Guarded Baskets for them Deuces
I really really Enjoy this Stretch of DG

Teesigns are Custom :)
Nice Big Wood Planks, with angle iron Sign Frames, and flat iron Bag Holders
Signs are Uniform (except 7) Showing Footage and Fairway Shape to One Basket Position, Water Danger, and the Tee for the Next Hole

Benches on every Hole are much Appreciated

Nice looking Putt Practice area, with all the Yellow and Purple Flowers out there in July and August
Shootout to ChillerDecks for the Practice Baskets effects

Couse Map and Information at Kiosk
Donation Basket can be Found here

Bridge on 8 and the Bridge to 14 are Nice to have
Several Steep Trails have Paver Steps

Played an evening Round during a Sprinkle Shower, and also an early Morning Round... didn't even get Mud on my Towel :D

Not Buggy, during July and August

Cons:

Lots of Steep Up n Down Hiking, not for Everyone

12s Green will most likely be Boggy during Spring, assumption based on playing during a rare Rain

Local Guys walk their Dog throughout the Courses, and don't pick up the Poop
Discgolfers don't pay attention to where their Unleashed Dogs poop... there's an inordinate amount of Poop at Baldy

Other Thoughts:

After Stretching and Putting around, Little Baldfoot is a Fun & Quick warmup 9er

Limited Space for the Discgolfs, often results in Fishscaling, as it does at Baldy. There IS Fencing to Protect Tees thankfully
Bag Drop opportunities on the Fairways of 2 3 4 9 10 14

There's Alternate Pin Sleeves on many Holes, that are Not Shown on the Teesigns. However, Teesigns are all currently accurate with the Baskets in the Position illustrated
(8s the only Basket that switched Positions from mid July thru mid August, now in the deep Right Position)

Course Map shows Alt Tees and Pins, but the Alt Tees seem to be WIP

Teepads are not uniform in Shape, but there's 18 level Concrete Pads

Slough and Creek could possibly effect Play on about half the Holes. Basically whenever you TreeKick Down to the Bottom, it might be wet down there :p

The Vegetation gets thicker down there too, but I didn't lose any Misthrows/Kicks thru Ten Rounds

Pend O'reille and Sandpoint City Beach are just a couple miles away :)

Drought, Wildfires, and 96° Temps was my general experience in Sandpoint... I'm not sure how things are at Baldfoot during other Seasons, but for mid Summer conditions on the DGCourse were excellent

Beautiful, Very Challenging, Fairly Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging - The course is not very long, playing 4,571' to 5,374' dependent on pin positions, but it takes a good round to get under par. A 1000 rated round for the only PDGA event so far was a four under 50. This was on the original pin positions. The course can be set up to play 2-3 strokes harder than this.

Awesome Setting - This is a great location for a course. Nice paths and fairways through plenty of trees, some elevation, and a small stream flowing through the middle. The overall ascetics of this course tops any other I have played.

Technical - Trees come into play on almost every shot. Almost every line from every tee has multiple 15' to 30' gaps in the trees to hit. For the most part, any shot more than 50' from the pin will have a good chance there will be trees in play.

Many Different Shots Required - Off the tee there is a good mix of R to L, L to R, and straight shots as the best option. Scrambling to save par will also require consideration of different shot shapes.

Multiple Pins - Every hole now has multiple pin positions.

Very Well Maintained - The local club has some dedicated members that take pride in the appearance and playability of the course.

Tees - Concrete tees provide a good teeing surface. With one exception, they are of adequate size with plenty of run up room for the longer holes.

Playable Rough - Scrambling for par is usually possible for an experienced player on all but the worst tee shot tree kicks.

Tee signs - Each sign has a graphic that is changed when the pin is moved. This is very helpful for the many blind tee shots.

Benches - Each tee has seating.

Cons:

Questionable Pin Placements - There are several pin placements that are lacking a good option on how to get within birdie range. Extreme shot shaping, excellent luck, 425'+ power, making a 40'+ putt or a combination of these is required to birdie these pins. The course has enough trees to make it challenging enough for anyone without hiding pins behind a wall of trees.

Future in Doubt - The City of Sandpoint purchased the land as a possible site for a new wastewater treatment plant. The plant will not be moved here, so there is a possibility that the land will need to be sold to repay the wastewater fund. There are alternate tees planned if the future of the course becomes more certain than a yearly lease.

No Restroom or Water- A porta potty is brought in for tourneys.

Bugs - Mosquitoes and gnats are heavy during wet times of the year. In most years they are not an issue after the end of June.

Not a Good Course for Beginners - The challenging nature of the course that is a plus for experienced players could be a detriment for beginners.

Slip and Slide - A dense forest canopy and a good amount of foot traffic means there is not much under growth. Wet weather can cause slippery conditions especially on the slopes. There are a few places on the course that can be a little hazardous in dry weather also due to slipping on pine needles and branches on the slopes.

Dogs - The locals let their dogs run loose on the course and do not usually clean up after them.

Other Thoughts:

Blatant Personal Opinions

For me, the course is a little too difficult overall to really enjoy playing day after day. Some pin placements that would allow for more birdie chances would be what I would change to make the course more enjoyable. Let me cut down a dozen trees and move around 10 pins and I could bump my rating to 4.5.

The stream through the middle of the course rarely comes into play. I think that not using it more in the design is a wasted opportunity.

Baldfoot is by far the most technical course I have played. Accuracy is far more important than power to score well.

One of my favorite courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Absolutely great scenery! Follows a meandering creek with great views of the surrounding mountains. Uses elevation and trees to create a challenging course which makes you feel like you could have done better. Tee pads are great and most holes have multiple pin positions as well as alternate tees (alternate tees are not concrete). Great mix of longer and shorter holes.

Cons:

Can be swampy in early spring with bugs all year but it is outdoors!

Other Thoughts:

One of the best courses I've ever played out of around 25 total courses played. Don't miss any opportunity to play this course.

This is my home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course, I live 2 blocks from the back nine. It is a newer course and every day the guys are making it better. It has come so far in the time it has been put it. All concrete tee pads are in. Alternative tee pads and pins being put it. 9 hole "kids course" has been installed. The place is practically being worked on every day. Picnick tables have been donated . New entry reader board with map of the course was installed.

So I've only been playing just over 3 years now and have this course so close to home is such a blessing . The the trees and technical shots have made me become such a better player.

Cons:

Lots of bushes, have lost few discs, but it's always being worked on by the crew.

Other Thoughts:

Grow the sport!

Pros:

Nice tee pads. Very challenging course. It requires side arm, RHBH, thumbers, tomahawks, and good old straight throws. The course was freshly mowed and all tees are clearly marked. We finished playing and wanted to play it again. They ask for a donation of a dollar which goes back into maintaining the course. We all contributed gladly.

Cons:

Lots of little stumps and roots to trip on so be careful when playing. It takes a player who is flexible with dog legs right left and trees. lots of sap, but that's to be expected on a new course.

Other Thoughts:

Make the drive its well worth it !!!!

Pros:

Technical holes and a good variation of long and short
Concrete tee pads were nice (most holes now have them)
Signage
Good baskets

Cons:

In the rain the up and down paths are a little treacherous
Lack of fairways on some holes make it frustrating to hit a good line, even with an accurate throw
Missing some concrete tee pads, so the muddy ones are slick

Coming along 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a lot of potential and I know it's still being improved. It's come a long way and has a long way to go. Not crowded, natural forested setting with variety of trees makes for a variety of shots. Something for everyone, whether you are a righty or lefty. A humbling course because you can't just huck it out there, you have to have good control to get through the trees. Plans include multiple bridges, benches, concrete boxes for every tee, clubhouse, and a 9 hole family course.

Cons:

It's not 100% complete so I can't give it a higher rating or else I would.

Other Thoughts:

I would rather play this unfinished course rather than a finished course that is not well maintained, crowded, poorly laid out, etc.

Good Course, Bad Bugs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course replaces the Vandal and is about a mile from that site. It is a tight tree course with good use of the terrain to create tough holes without being able to make them overly long. It is very new but is being shaped fairly quickly and I like how it is looking. Holes wend through the woods and alternate between tunnel shots, pine picket fences, and shots that would be a tunnel on other courses that seem open by comparison. Nice variety and use of available terrain.
Signs are different from what I have seen, Wood burned planks with all the necessary info. Low tech but does everything they need to.

Cons:

Most of these have to do with age of course and I know they will get better over time. The Vandal was a well done course and I expect they will do the same here. This includes the tee boxes which are currently roughed in and a little hazardous. About tweaked my back on 1 which dropped more than I expected. The pads that are in are well done but short and raised enough that you can't start behind it. Tee on one of the back holes, I think 12 or 13 is set in an area behind a log that gives a n interesting look at the pin but under current layout makes a RHFH throw impossible and a RHBH throw hazardous. It looks like pad placement can fix some of this then they put in the concrete if they are careful.
A couple of holes are a little close to each other but not too bad with the notable exception of 14/15. The walkout to 15 goes along the blind part of the fairway of 14 where a RHBH is likely to land. If the pair following us would have had bigger arms we may have been hit. Could easily be redirected to safer path.
A couple of the holes are super short, 150' or less with tight doglegs to be able to fit in 18 holes.
Finally, the creek, while nice doesn't flow very fast so there were plenty of mosquitoes that we hadn't expected. Bring bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

I will miss The Vandal but this course looks to be a worthy replacement. It will be shady on hot summer days and is nicely different from other local courses.I wish them well getting it finished and look forward to playing it again.
I will raise rating as improvements proceed.

Looking Really Good!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 19, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a new course on a great piece of land. The course is placed into a rolling, heavily wooded parcel of land with a small creek running through it.

It starts with a nice graveled parking lot with a Porta-can. The "warped basket" sculpture at the parking area is where you deposit your $1 per round donation.

This course has been improved considerably since I last played it in summer 2014. All new concrete tees are excellent. Great new signs, and plenty of "next tee" signs as well. The local guys have done a ton of work out here and it shows.

All of the holes except for 17 require a drive through the woods, with most holes being quite tight. Several baskets are placed with drop-offs behind to give you some risk/reward consideration. Several baskets are also on side hills with roll-away potential.

A good variety of uphill, downhill, and sidehill shots. Also a nice mix of left and right bends and doglegs.

Hole 17 is your one chance to air out your drive. It is completely different than the other holes on the course, but a nice bit of variety.

Some additional tree cutting and limb removal has been performed, and it is all for the better as far as I can tell. They've open up Hole 10 a little and there is now a RHFH route as an option to the previous RHBH route.

Cons:

There are still some rough areas on the course, with lots of little tree stubs sticking up to trip you. Most of the paths are in good shape, but a few places as still rough, uneven and steep.

There is a long walk from Hole 13 to 14, and thank goodness the first sign said "across the creek" because after that there is nothing. A couple of additional signs would be helpful as you cross another path on the way there and it could get a little confusing.

Update 5/19/2015 - A couple of my previous cons have been taken care of in the past year. This course has really been improved a great deal in that time.

Other Thoughts:

My first review gave a 3.0 rating, with a note that this course could be 4 stars with concrete tees and a bit more cleaning/clearing. With the new tees and signs I've bumped it to 3.5 and I still think that this will be a 4 start course when completely finished up.

For a two-year old course built by locals this course is pretty amazing.

Great Piece Of Land They Have Here! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baldfoot is the new home of the former Vandal course. The baskets have been moved over here and a 18 hole course has been roughed in. This rural property is not Parks/Recreation owned but is instead Publics Works property and therefore comes with fewer restrictions.

It's a wonderful piece of property bordering the train tracks with mature timberlands, rolling hills, a little open area and a sweet little creek running through the center. There is a decent amount of parking near the road and a few rickety outbuildings which could be used for tourney headquarters.

A unique basket type sculpture greets you as you enter. It will gladly take your $1 donation to play the course. I'll download my picture as soon as I figure out how.

Course volunteers have plans to put in concrete tee boxes. I was shown pictures of the tee signs they are in the process of developing and plan to install in the future.

Currently the tee pads are just roughed in earthen areas and are by no means permanent. Same with the current temporary signs. But the current 18 hole design already features some really challenging and fun technical holes. I really enjoyed # 8 which has you throwing over the creek uphill to a basket which is currently hidden up and to the right.

# 12 is also special. You're teeing off from under a large Cedar tree and having to throw over a large branch. You have to keep your drive fairly low with some annie on it. It makes for a very unique hole.

Already one can see where a tremendous amount of cutting, clearing, trail and bridgework and engineering has gone into this course. And there is still much work to be done!

Cons:

When finished, it's still going to be mostly a wooded technical course. There won't be too many holes for the big arms to really air it out on. # 17 is 440' across an open fairway but that's the only big throw.

It's currently still very rustic with it's signage and tee pads.

After # 13, there was a scary ass creek crossing for me, a 63 year fat, old man. I'm sure you younger guys had no problems scampering across those skinny little trees laid across the creek but I was visualizing a splashdown. I'd prefer a more permanent bridge of sorts or perhaps a ferry.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course a lot. My rating of 2.5 will increase by 1/2 point when the signs go in and by another 1/2 point when the tee pads are installed.

I hope to get back someday and see enjoy and finished design.

UPDATE: A few years later and improvements have been made.
