10 Must-Have Beginner Discs

Back on topic:

Distance Drivers:
- 150 Valkyrie
- 175 Valkyrie
- 150 Teebird
- 175 Teebird

Why? Valkyrie is a great starter driver, and Teebird introduces them into a reasonable overstable driver. Neither are ridiculous (first time out? Here's a 175 Champion Destroyer!), and you've got light weights for general play and downwind stuff, and heavy weights for upwind shots and to see how weight affects the flight characteristics of a disc. While I'm not a huge fan of how easy it is to damage a DX disc, I'd probably recommend these in DX anyhow, simply for the cost reduction.

And yes, I know the Teebird is a fairway driver. :)

Midranges:
- 175 Roc
- 175 Kite

KC Pro Roc, DX Kite. The Roc was my first midrange, and it remains in my bag to this day. It's super-stable, realistically drive-able, and an all-around great disc to have in one's bag. (Substitute the obvious Buzzz in your bag if you want a taste of Discraft in your bag.) The Kite is a nice midrange with lots of glide and turn, perfect for if you're a real noodle-arm and the Roc isn't working for you. 175 weight on both for emphasis on control over distance.

Putters:
- 175 Birdie or 175 Polecat
- 175 Banger GT

The Birdie or Polecat are great transition putter for newbies, because it feels like a smaller version of a Frisbee, something a great deal of people grew up with. The Banger GT's thumb groove has a good feel to it, and is great for learning to jump putt. 175 for control over distance.

Plus two marker discs, I guess.

Here's my vague list

Three of the same weight/same plastic putter (not just any putter)
any Wizard, Voodoo, Aviar, Magnet, APX, Reef, Pure, Ridge, or Focus (3 of them)
I don't feel overstable putters help beginners from people experiences.

Two stable Midranges
Either Comet, Fuse, Buzzz, Core, Mako, Coyote, or Buzzz SS (when they come out in regular run.

Two slightly overstable Midranges
Roc or Wasp (they will be able to throw better in our wind, and learn what "beating in" is)

Two Understable Fairway Drivers:
Either Rivers or Leopards

One "control" driver:
Probably a TeeBird...Stalker decent option too

So...

Bag for beginner (by my choices of anything)
(3) 172g Soft Wizards
(2) 175g Elite X Comets
(2) 175g DX Rocs
(2) 168ish Gold Line Rivers
(1) 168ish Star TeeBird

Bag I put together recently for my pops
(3) 175g DX Avairs
(2) 177g and 170g Elite Z Comets
(2) 180g DX Rocs
(1) 174g Elite Z Stalker
(1) 166g ESP Stalker

But if your looking for 10 different discs as a beginner I would suggest in order (starting point and building up too):

Wizard
Comet
Buzzz
Leopard or River
Cyclone
Wasp
TeeBird
Banshee
Vision
FireBird or Predator

There would be some overlap once you get all 10 in your bag. But this would be a decent way to learn how to utilize different discs while you build the power to throw them to their maximum ability as a beginner.

If I were going to get a newbie started, I'd hand them a:

neutral putter (P&A Aviar)
neutral midrange (Z Buzzz SS)

As they progressed, I'd add a:
understable fairway driver (Pro Leopard)
stable fairway driver (Star TL)
slightly overstable midrange (DX/KC Roc or Z Buzzz)

Once they were comfortable with all of those discs I add a:
understable control driver (Champ RoadRunner)
driving putter (Wizard or KC Aviar)

The final additions would be a:
slightly overstable fairway (Champ Teebird or Champ Eagle)
understable putter (PA4 or Magic)
overstable utility driver (Champ Firebird)

3 matching putters (of players choice)
1 Z buzzz
2 X Comets
Champ Teebird, Star Leopard, DX Leopard (or a similar combo of fairway driver)
1 light Valk (for later)

Ten discs I'd recommend to anyone starting out:

Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Led Zeppelin: 4 / Zofo
Jimi Hendrix: Smash Hits
Rush: Permanent Waves
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
The Beatles: The White Album
The Rolling Stones: Hot Rocks
The Who: Who's Next
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
AC/DC: Back in Black

These form the basis of a solid, well-rounded collection. There are many other great discs, several of which contain deeper cuts and are acquired tastes which should really only be worked on after you develop a solid appreciation for the basics.

Relevance to DG: Keep these on your MP3 player, they'll help keep you "in the zone" which will improve your game regardless what you're throwing! :p

I've only played for one summer so I'm still in the 'beginner' category.

Looking back I would have been best served by this ten-disc collection:

Two Wizards
Two Magics
Two Comets
Two Rocs
Two Diamonds

Is this the overall "best" starting bag? No, but it would have been good for me.

If I had to hand 10 different molds to a noob, I'd try:
DX Aviar
Soft Magnet
SS Wizard
KC Roc
Z Buzzz
Comet
Heavy Teebird
Leopard
Sidewinder
Valk

Amp
Tangent
Ion

You don't even need 10. Just those three.

1. any putter
2. Buzzz
3. a more understable mid, comet or fuse
4. teebird as an OS driver
5.leopard as a S/US driver

I don't think much else is really needed

This^
Though I'd also keep the Soft Challenger in there too...

Amp
Tangent
Ion

uggghh.

anyways.

Aviar (nice and stiff. and neutral) x3
Shark one light one a little heavy
Roc 2x DX 170 or lighter
Leopard x2 DX
Teebird DX heavy. Overstable slot

10 discs?

5 putters (same weight, same plastic)
1 Coyote, Comet, or Fuse
1 Leopard

Though I wouldn't give 10 discs to a newbie in the first place...

This is where I'm coming from. Noobs don't need 10 discs. Even I don't need 10 discs and I'm a master disc golfer. :p

So, I'd give them 5 Ions, a Tangent and an Amp. Is that better TourneyPlayer? :D
