[Gateway] Anyone play with gateway?

I gotta say thanks big time to Marshall Street for the 6 dollar deals...I would never have even looked at them most likely...

(Shameless plug for the Voodoo)
Try one already!
They are worlds better in wind compared to the wizard and feel great. You can drive with them too!

I've got two brand new first run Voodoos (or the Z-Drone) waiting to trade you for that CFR Rhyno if we can ever meet up...

I thought I'd save time and find an old post I made about Gateway. It turns out that I could have posted six or seven similar posts in the time it took me to find it, but oh well...

Anyway, this is my general impression of Gateway.
Gateway is kind of for the advanced discaholic. They tinker with the plastic a lot, so the runs vary wildly in feel and performance. If you find one run of a certain disc that you love, you will end up searching high and low for more of them becasue the next run invariably will be different. You end up looking for a white or baby blue Illusion where the wing sits down flat...or a needle in a haystack, whichever way you want to say it. If you are really into plastic, it kinda feeds into the disc snob vibe..."I only throw the red E Elements from 2005"...but if you just want to get another Element that flies like the last Element you had, Gateway will drive you nuts.

The web site thing is the same way. Dave posts on PDGA.com all the time and he blogs sometimes on his site, so if you look around you can get the info on his discs. It's just harder than logging on to the GDS site and looking at the disc info.

I don't want to sound like I'm discouraging people from trying GDS, becasue they have some nice discs. You just need to be realistic about the kind of company they are. The guys who run the place and work there are disc golfers first. They are businessmen second. Maybe third or fourth. At any rate, it's not exactly a shining example of how a business should be run. But, they are disc golfers and they make some really good golf discs. In the end, isn't that really all we care about?
The new Apache driver seems like a good disc. It was a little more stable than I was looking for and I hate the gummy clear E plastic, but they are supposed to be running it in a firmer E soon that might be the ticket.

For whatever reason, Gateway has a problem making an understable driver. Other than the Assassin, all of their discs tend to be more overstable than you would expect. The Assassin is a good understable driver, and the old Gateway/Quest Infernos were great hyzerflip distance discs. I was hoping the Apache would be a good Inferno replacement, but it might be too stable for that. I'm still going to check it out in the firmer E.

I just picked up an firm E Spirit (I don't like the floppy stuff either). It is the craziest thing I've ever seen and will take some getting use to. It is similar to a pig/gator type disc in that it has no glide and drops fast but it's a distance driver. When you throw it the left wing almost imediately starts dropping and the disc just falls out of the sky like a duck that's been shot. Great for spike hyzers and probably great into a strong headwind but have not tried that yet.

Second this: I carry a Gateway sabre and it is far more overstable that I expected.
Gateway's putters are great though. I have a few first run voodoos I really like and a wizard that Ive really come to love. I personally think their plastics tend to be harder/firmer than you; expect as well. i.e. their soft = more like a medium, super soft = more like a soft etc etc.

I see what you mean too. We went to Play it Again Sports this evening before playing a round and they had several Magics and Voodoos and they felt nothing like the Magics we have...One was even listed as soft and it was not nearly as bendable as even the hardest of ours.

Oh, yeah. Gateway has released some Viagra plastic for sure. I've got some Illusions you can shingle a roof with.

Viagra plastic? That's something Quest AT was experimenting with right?;)

Is it just me or do discs in Viagra plastic stay in the air longer, sometimes longer than 4 hours?
