On Tuesday I suffered a neck fracture, and broke two bones in my back, and my face(orbital & sinus)... I will be in this brace for some 6-8 weeks... Are there any suggestions on how to help with my strength while I am unable to do just about anything???

THANKS

Ouch, get well soon buddy. I don't know what you can do other than just eat really healthy and try not to pack on any pounds. I'd stay away from carbs since you can't move around much to burn them off.

I know how it is to be laid up (had sprained my ankle a good one this past winter)

All I can think of is walking around if you can. Kneck and back injuries aren't the best injuries, and can take some time to heal. Otherwise rest rest rest. Believe me it sucks, not being able to do what your use to.

Hope you heal soon, we need more Minnesotans back out on the course so we can take over the entire DG world and make them bow to our authority.

Will keep you in the prayers and thoughts when I'm out on the course, my next round will be for you.

Geez...what happened? Guess its not a ski accident in the summer.

Basically walk or swim if you can. Stretch as possible. 6-8 weeks is not that hard to comeback from. It typically only takes two weeks to get back to where you were, even from longer recovery periods up to six months. Make sure you go to physical therapy after the brace is off and ease back into DG especially with neck/back injury.

My only feedback would be to talk with your DR and consult with a sports rehab specialist before embarking on any fitness regimine of your own design.

Since you will be in a brace for 6-8 weeks you could be back on the course in late September so don't do anything that may exacerbate your injuries and keep you from healing up quickly.

Get well soon!!

I laid myself up last summer and the summer before. (Broken shoulder and herniated disc) If I had it to do again, I would have rehabbed both injuries more before I started playing again. For that matter I should have taken more time off of work too. IOW don't be in too much of a hurry to actually play again. Last time I restarted with just putters and worked back into drivers just this summer. This worked well.

When you get into rehab ask your therapist what exercises you can do. They will likely be a bigger help than most anyone here. FWIW the best exercise I got was to hold a beer in my hand with my arm straight out in front and slowly make circles. I still do this. It strengthens the muscles that are supposed to hold your back straight.

Please note that this method becomes exponentially more difficult with each consecutive beer.

It has only been three weeks since my last throw, and I am going crazy!!! I so want to go out there and toss a disc---even if it is only a roller 75'-100'... I know that I can't do it though...:(

I love your dedication to disc golf and wanting to get back so soon. I had a surgery to take out my large intestine (35 staples down the middle of me) and then another 2 months later to reconnect me (7 staples in the side). I would say just try to stretch once you are healed. Get yourself warmed up and then slowly work back into it. As much as you love disc golf, it's not worth messing your body up again for being impatient.

Yeoch. Maybe it's time to start watching some DG videos until you get the OK to start exercising.

my advise would be to leave DG alone for a while. You're only going to torture yourself and want to rush back sooner. It sounds like you're pretty messed up, I would focus on healing fully before hitting the course again.

I know exactly how you feel! I was blindsided by a snowboarder in January and had to sit out the remainder of my ski season with a fractured pelvis. The worst was accompanying my family to Colorado and having to sit in the lodge while they skied every day. Argh!! Watching my teammates hit the gates on race night while I sat indoors was pretty torturous, too. I finally managed to play some DG in April while still on crutches. It was slow and agonizing, but was playing none-the-less.

Truly.....rest well, rest plenty, and rehab up a storm when they send you for PT. Don't neglect any exercises they assign you at home, either. You'll hate it then, but will thank yourself later when you're both healthy and strong.

For now, just hang out with us, eh??? :)

Good to hear you are getting back on the horse (or course). DG addiction is something fierce.

we have a local that had major neck surgery(trampoline accident) late last year and he's come back this year better than before. He started back up with just putting and SLOWLY worked his way to full-power drives. It's gonna take some time............

Use band based resistance training, your doctors may give you some for rehab anyway.

After you're back in the game, you need to focus on core stability, and hip MOBILITY.

Now would be a good time to focus on your diet, clean it up a lot, give your body good, real, health, clean foods. You'll be able to eat more of it for less calories, which you won't be able to burn right now.

Also if you throw back hand you can use a disc like a "flick" and just practice your throw "from the hit back" ala bento and work on keeping your arm and wrist right. That way, less to work on when you get better.

Though I HIGHLY SUGGEST you take SOME TIME OFF.

I'd caution against rushing back from an injury, too. Take enough time, follow your rehab, work back in gradually. Otherwise, you could end up with a LONG layoff. Really no fun.
