Courses on military bases...

when I was stationed at Little Creek Va back in 1983 there was one there. Couldn't tell you I it is still there. Nice 9 holer.

I am at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. We have a 27 hole golf course, but they only utilize 18 holes because of cost to maintain. I was going to talk to the golf course manager to see if we could use the other 9 hole as a DG course. It have some trees, water and if done right could be a lot of fun. I was just curious on everyone's opinion since I haven't been in the DG scene to long. I have played the course on Edward AFB in California, but it was mostly wide open with a few cool mandos.

Here in Hawaii(on Oahu), there are no permanent basket courses, except for the 2 on the military bases.

3..Fort Carson in Colorado Springs had big 18 hole built on it in a rec area on Carson but off the main post. I was told it got pulled and now they are building a 9 hole on main post.Carson has a ball golf course that is pretty popular.

I know Warren in Cheyenne has a course as well. I was told it was mostly wide open and windy. You have to a military ID or escort to go play it which makes it a challenge for most people to get to.

I would suggest if you want anyone other then military members to play it and go through the hassle of getting on post it better be a pretty awesome course.

I have played the course at FE warren and it is legit. It can be windy but if you can get on it is def worth playing....

I talked to the MWR on Ft. Knox when i was stationed there and they werent interested at all. They might as well have laughed in my face when i asked them about it. At the time it may have been my rank they were laughing at though.

Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield UT has an 18 hole course. You have to have a military person sponsor you to get you on base to play. I have yet to play it, But I have heard it is a pretty good course.

MacDill AFB in Tampa has a course. It's an odd layout in that it's 12 holes with 2 pads and 2 baskets each. They say it equals 48 holes essentially. Good baskets, a few short holes and a few ridiculously long/tough holes.

.

Turkey Creek was pulled a long time ago. The problem with it was it was designed as a "Championship Level" course which just meant really, really long holes. It was put in without any sort of maintenence agreement and no on ever took care of it. Because of that, no one ever played. So when the lease on that land came up, the bigwigs at Carson decided it would be better to just quit leasing the property since all that was there was the course and some horse stables.

The new nine holer is...underwhelming to say the least. I designed an 18 hole course there on base for them and they kept like four holes then crammed another five where I wanted holes 5-7. Plus, there's lots of rattlesnakes in the area which I did not realize when I designed the 18 holes. So I don't see it get any more play than Turkey Creek...maybe even less. Kind of a shame.
