Just started playing about a month ago and had a shot that got stuck in a tree. It was way up there.Took a while to finally get it down.I was just wondering if you were playing a tournament where would you play your next shot from and would there be some kind of penalty.

We play the 2 meter rule in Leagues. If it's above 2 meters you take a stroke and play from directly under where it was stuck. Probably the same in a Tourney. Never had that situation arise.

you would play your next shot from directly beneath where it was stuck. whether or not there was a penalty would be dependent on the td's choice of whether the archaic, arbitrary 2 meter rule was in effect- generally this is not the case.

You would play from a spot directly below the disc. It would be a penalty is the tournament was enforcing the 2-meter rule. If it IS OB and it was a drive, you would have the option to redrive and take a 1 stroke penalty. If you are really interested in tournament play, you SHOULD review the rules for such play. You can find them at the PDGA website. You might be surprise how knowing the rules will change how you play. Welcome aboard and remember the one who has the most fun wins!!

today my friend threw his disc in a tree, he decided it would be a good idea to throw his bag at it, the bag gets stuck and the disc comes down,

some nice people helped us get it down by climbing the tree, it was funny though.

2 meter rule does not equate to OB, it is a different animal. you would not have the option of re-teeing.

Exactly. They are completely separate rules in the rulebook.

803.08 Disc Above the Playing Surface
803.09 Out-of-Bounds

If you have to climb the tree or reach up to grab it, shake it out, etc, it's a penalty throw from just below where it was stuck.

Now if it fell down by it's self (or someone throws a disc from the tee or their lie and knocks it out) play it from where it lands. Even if it took 5 minutes to fall out of the tree.

Just make sure you attempt to get to the spot promptly for the second ruling.

Learned that from the PDGA Officials test.

Also be sure to mark your lie under the disc with your mini before you try and get it out of the tree. Its really best to mark it and throw your next shot before you attempt to shake your disc out, that way other players can continue on up the fairway and keep playing.

Also a little slingshot comes in handy for getting discs out of trees ; ) you dont want to be that guy who throws other discs or his stool up to knock it out and get those stuck as well :)

C. No penalty shall be incurred if the disc falls, unassisted by a player or spectator, to a position less than two meters above the playing surface before the thrower arrives at the disc. The thrower may not delay in order to allow the position of the disc to improve.

In tournament play the first thing you do when you approach your disc that is suspended above the playing surface is mark it directly underneath with your mini marker. It doesn't matter if it's suspended 20 feet in the tree, stuck in a bush 1 foot off the ground, or resting in the wrong basket. Then you can determine if it's over 2m if that rule is in effect.

its says unassisted by a player thats a little fuzzy (isnt that a surprise:rolleyes:) that does leave getting hit by a real throw open to interpretation
