DIY: From Xmas tree to DG basket

How far are you from DC or Baltimore? I may take you up on that.

I live a little North of Bmore and work down in Silver Spring

Wow, well done. I can tell you did your research on DIY baskets. You def incorporated some great ideas. i really like the hose to complete the basket look.

Thanks very much!

Nice work! I'm big fan of DIY baskets. Especially those that are made of recycled or re-purposed materials. If your looking for other options for bases, might I suggest using an office chair base for your stand. That's what I used on mine and I love it. I can roll it around the garage if need be or when I need to remove the wheels, I can have them off in less then a minute without tools.

Thanks, me too! The office chair base is a good idea. I think I have an old office chair around here somewhere that I may be able to use......

You will want to wrap the L brackets with tape as well. I didn't want to wrap mine on my home made basket, but I've got a bunch on nicked up discs that made me do it. Pic below is before adding tape.

And to all the haters "for what it costs why don't you just go buy one?" ITS ABOUT THE FUN OF MAKING IT! Try it. You'll have fun doing it, and its a good project to involve a son, nephew, or annoying friend. No matter how you slice it you're gonna spend around 75-125 bucks.

Yeah, even though its not an issue for me yet, preventitive taping to save discs may be in order...

And you're right, the project was really fun. So nice to see your vision come to light. Especially when things go pretty well ;)

PS-those baskets look great guys!

I can easily get a christmas tree up to Silver Spring, or even Baltimore. I will probably be tossing one next month, unfortunatly, I already threw away my school's tree a few weeks ago.

post your creation on the Homemade discatcher gallery.

Right on man. I'd seriously take any parts I can get. My buddy is taking down an old chain link fence and said hed give me all of the pole to it. Said he had enough to make at least 4-5 55" poles :)

I'll post up my basket in the gallery you're talking about, thx!

55" is a good min. length. Depends on the base being used also. I would say anywhere in that range is tolerable. Also the diameter should prob be between 1 1/8 and 1/3/4 or so.

tire chains huh... chains are the thing holding me back from completing the rest of my baskets... they cost so damn much. where the hell do you buy tire chains at?
Second hand stores such as St Vincent DePaul or Goodwill often have a set or two. Garage sales can also be productive. Make sure they're not cable chains;)

welcome! from another MD'er. where do you usually play? you probably aren't too far from Codorus, right?

Yeah, Codorus is about 45 min away, maybe a little more. I play Scarboro Hills at least 1 sometimes 2 times a week. I consider that my "home" course. Usually hit druid or pine grove every few weeks as well.

How about you?

nice, scarboro is a beast. druid is fun, always a good crowd there. pine grove is tough and one of my faves. wish there were tee pads.

in salisbury at the moment but only for a few more months ... moving to annapolis this fall. not much better there but at least i'll be closer to the good stuff. lived in bmore the first two years i played so i got spoiled - druid, ptap, rockburn, codorus, pine grove all within 45 minutes.

I hear what you are saying man. Small world. I went to college at Salisbury and met my wife who grew up in Cambridge there. I'd like to get down and play schumaker sometime soon! I heard another course is in the works down there.... any truth to that?

Did you go to the diabetes doubles at Scarboro.

No, I must have missed it. When was that?
The only charity event I can recall was the "Let's Throw Together for Arthritis Foundation" event in March...

Why did I think it was for diabetes? yes, I was there. I was on team "Search This"

same as you did. everyone at the tourney played the same series of tees. Remember, those are doubles scores, not my scores. I would not mind taking credit for it, but I did have a left handed ringer to save me from my bad shots.

oh I thought you went. I do not remember. I think we played longs then shorts and my partner and I were ok from the longs and screwed up the shorts.

Gotcha. Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I remembered hearing about it, but was not there for the actual event. I think I'm going to sign up for the Scarboro Scorcher in Aug. It'll be my first tourney. Gotta start somewhere right?
