A nationwide disc golf event is coming to the Brainerd Lakes Area. A satellite competition for the simultaneous Hott Shott National Championships will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Brainerd's Lum Park.

It's not your typical tournament, however: This one is all about putting. Participants take shots from distances of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 feet. In total, they will attempt 10 putts from each distance station.

Because of the short distances, it's a great opportunity for anyone to try the sport, said Matt Perrine, the event's tournament director.

"Even those who have only thrown a Frisbee before will have a lot of fun at this event," he added. "Everyone will be using the same disc golf putter, creating a level playing field. Plus, the discs are provided, so you don't even need to own any disc golf equipment to try it out."

Other Hott Shott putting tournaments will be held around the nation on Dec. 14. For the Brainerd scores to count in the national competition, every performance will be taped and uploaded to YouTube. Area filmmaker Nate Phillipps (of narcherFILMS) will be on hand to capture the Lum Park attempts.

Hott Shott will award prizes to the top scorers nationwide, male and female, in the following categories: "Overall," "Senior 60-Plus," "Youth 13-17," "Junior 10-12" and "Cadet 9 and Under." The upstart company will also award "National Champion" certificates to the highest scorer nationally for each year of age and each gender.

Cost is $5. Walkups are welcome.
