How many own a retriever?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this thing working in a pond? I normally don't have a problem getting in, but since it is snake season and it is Oklahoma, I have seen more and more cottonmouths and copperheads swimming around for my liking. I grew up a country boy and can deal with them on land, but in the water, they have the upper hand(??? assuming you could say a snake has an upper hand lol) I'd take my pit out, but she's my baby girl, she'd protect me, but I don't want anything happening to her either.
