The latest review for Idlewild was a 1 star because the reviewer felt the course was too tough.

I do not feel the rating is fair and is not at all consistent with the previous ratings that Idlewild was given.
If you were to equate toughness of play against the standard of a quality course, then very few championship level courses would ever get a good rating. There are no hidden monsters at Idlewild. You step up to the tee and arrive at your best plan of action. It is up to you to implement the plan. Idlewild has kicked my butt a few times. But I always feel respect for the course. If I leave Idlewild with my butt kicked, I know that I missed some opportunities. I should judge myself not the course.
If you were to compare dg courses with ball golf courses, Idlewild would be the Augusta National (home of the Masters). Obviously Augusta National is a very tough course. That should not be a strike against whether or not it is a good course. Same with Idlewild.
