Moving For Disc Golf

Charlotte NC

Charlotte would be a good location. Great courses. Easy access to Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill courses, the Triad courses, even Atlanta is in easy shooting distance for a weekend trip with a ton of courses in between on I-85. And it's close to the mountains.

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, where I relocated to 15 year ago, would be great too. Great courses, fairly diverse job scene but like everywhere else cuts are being made, and NC Piedmont weather is great year round.

NC doesn't suck.

I dont have anything to compare it too, but it would seem NC would have to be one of the upper teir states for Disc golf

Clearwater, FL. Year round golf. 7 courses within 30 min. Doubles events, handicaps, monthly pdga tourneys. Some of the best DGers in the world live here. Sometimes you get to play with The Champ. Plenty other stuff to do like fishing, beachlife, nightlife, casino etc

Definitely would have to be Charlotte...from what i know, there is not a comparable area...i've played renny and hornets nest...man i wish i had half the courses close to me that charlotte has...i guess the one plus i can look at is that idlewild is only about an hour away...

I think Cincinnati, OH, would have to be my top choice. Idlewild, Banklick, Mt. Airy, and tons of other courses. According to the DGCR search engine, there are 150 courses within 150 miles of Cincinnati, and 50+ are rated 3.5 stars or higher. Other major metro areas within that distance include Indianapolis, Columbus, Lexington, Dayton, and Lexington-Fayette -- all with their own disc golf scenes. For big tourneys, you can get to St. Louis (5.5 hours), Kalamazoo, MI (5 hours), Ann Arbor, MI (4 hours), Pittsburgh, PA (5 hours), Bowling Green (3 hours), Nashville (4 hours), and a host of other cities.

Charlotte, NC, might be my runner up, for reasons -Dut- gave. Renny Gold is my favorite course I've ever played, and Charlotte weather is mild enough to play pretty much year round in sunshine. Lots of good tourneys in Raleigh/Durham, Augusta, Winthrop. Ashville is beautiful...

And, in a five-way tie for third:

Allentown, PA -- several amazing courses that hosted worlds, and lots more amazing courses within a short drive.

Pittsburgh, PA -- Three of the top 20 courses in the country in that area, and several more on the way. Very enthusiastic locals.

Portland, OR -- just be a great city to live in, and some amazing disc golf. Look at the OR courses: three of the top 10.

Austin, TX -- lots of above average courses, and you can play there year round, which is worth a lot. And courses keep improving in TX.

St. Louis, MO -- It would just be great to spend time with Dave and the Gateway folks; I think it would be a chance to spend a lot of course time with some amazing players as well as look behind the scenes at more of the disc golf business side of things. Also, some great courses, and close to Kansas City and other big tourneys.

If I'm relocating, I would also consider the job market and weather. My choice would be the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham), then closely behind would be Austin Texas. Both areas offer a lot of great courses, year round disc golf weather, good employment opportunities and culture.

Sounds like the border of Ohio, Kentucky and nearby PA seem to be the best place for DG, You got Idelwild and all sorts of high ranking courses in PA

Although I forget about the winter months, so I suppose someplace down south for year round golf would be a little better.

If weather was not an issue I'd think Michigan would be good. They seem to have a lot of disc golf stuff goin' on. Never been there but I'd like to visit for sure.

Weather would definitely be an issue for me. I am from the south and do not like the cold. So with that caveat I would have to say the Fort Worth area. Lots of good courses, warm weather most of the year and big enough to have other attractions around town.

Either Northern Kentucky, or just a little south of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The Cincy area has many, many courses as well as a few GREAT ones, BG has a few and is close enough to Nashville, and would still have friends and family in E-town for Freeman Lake.

Charlotte has five great courses in it, one of which has hosted Worlds and the other one of the toughest youll ever play.

Cincinnati!

I agree.

35 Courses within 50 miles of downtown Cincinnati.

Also the caliber is superb with the (Best Courses of 2008) #2 Idlewild, #12 Banklick Woods, and #18 Mt. Airy.

Texas has a couple tourneys every weekend which is a huge draw, but the different metro areas are a little spread out which makes the driving aspect something to think about. I live in Houston which is about 3 and a half hours away from Austin/San Antonio, and 4 and a half hours from Dallas/FW. Houston has a ton (although very few high quality) of courses but I would recommend probably the Austin area highest. With Houck there designing most courses (including his ranch at Wimberly) the Central Texas DG scene is alive and well. A lot of players on a lot of quality courses. I am not a native Texas guy but I will say it is better here then you would think.

Uh, I actually DO play 12 months out of the year, and I live in Wisconsin. Grow a pair and come play some real winter rounds.

x2 amen brother...(and i don't even play as cold as you probably do...but i do play almost the whole year)

and the choking philly teams are?

Ahem!! -- Phillies!!!!!!

I'm gonna stay right here in Delaware. Philly is close, Baltimore and its great area courses are close. Not mention the excellent number of quality courses in little ol Delaware. Iron Hill is going to blow everyone's mind. (It was just recently approved to expand to 27 holes...)
