Flooding would probably more effective. LOL. But really, it wouldn't have to be X-radiation. Just anything that could clearly show where the disc is in relation to the OB plane.
And while I'm here, another idea I had: Sonar/ echo-location for finding discs which have sunk to the bottom and are possibly covered by sediment. This way, you could leave the aquatic ecology in peace, i.e not trudging through water or dragging a rake or GR through the mud.
