The Dye A Day Thread! (Part II)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Man, this thread has died over the last few months, what happened to the days of a dye a day? Maybe it'll pick up once winter sets in...

Well, I was going to post up my first hand cut dye ( 5th dye done total ) but I don't want to embarrass myself .

The cuts werent that bad for my first attempt but like a dumb ass I dropped the disc when I was placing it in the dye and got dye all in side the bottom of the disc. Then when I tried to rinse it out after the first dip in the dye it ran all under the vinyl and bled around the rim and seeped onto the flight plate.

I have never had that happen yet but I did learn two things:

1. DO NOT DROP A DISC INTO THE DYEPAN !

2. Next time seal that overlapping vinyl up nice to try to prevent this if #1 happens...

I feel like throwing it in the trash, even though it was a used disc I was giving to a friend because he throws that mold.

I almost dont want him or anybody else to see it for that matter :gross:.

Hats off to you guys that can pull off hand cutting and make it look like it was a plotter cut stencil :hfive:.

I will only do machine cut stencils from now on and now I have 11' of 631 left to use for masking purposes ;).

I haven't dyed in years, but in honor of the thread hippiediscdude was kind enough to start when I was (and to give discguy some confidence to post), here's one I did on a FLX Surge. It's really blurry today.

And for what I believe was the first and only DGCR Christmas dye competition, here's my entry. The Saran Wrap method was all the rage...and great for covering up small bleeds! I had a masking error on the dog's eye and had to hit it with acetone to fade it which really lightened the black around his eye. I was so frustrated, I just took a Sharpie to clean it up.

Since I had already "Wrapped" the front, I figured you can't get enough Christmas cheer on a disc so I did this to the back.

Thanks for the kind words T ;).

I will probably post my "Skeeter" on a "Skeeter" fail anyway :p.

I am proud of my other previous dyes I have done before. I have posted them all in this thread as well. Also, thanks to Bennett for all the awesome vinyl cuts :D!

The SmashboxxTV dye I did Johnny V saw it and even posted it on their Facebook page .

Some single color dip dyes. Star Valkyrie and Champion Glow Coyote.

Threw some spin dyes on a pair of my white Envys. Neutron takes dye so well, but I can never bring myself to wipe those jelly bean stock stamps. Too damn pretty.

Hey
Do glow discs take dye?

Not necessarily. Plenty of companies (Gateway, Innova, Discmania) make base-line Glow plastic. Innova DX glow will not take dye well. However, same rule applies as standard discs. Almost any premium plastic will take dye well. Dynamic glows, Prodigy Glow, Gateway HPP Glow, Innova Champ Glow all dye very well. Just make sure it's not baseline plastic and you'll be all set!

my first shot at dying

I used dip and glo and modified an old technique. Let me know what you think. And anyone from new Jersey do lots of disc dying I have lots of ideas and would love to work with someone sometime. Before removing excess and after

Do Glow Discs Dye?

Yes... Champion, Z-line, Moonshine.... premium plastic dyes well. DX and cheaper glow discs don't take well.

The attached image is a glow Champion Thunderbird

First time dyeing

About a month ago I ended up here on these forums to browse through cool dyes just for fun. Eventually just lookin wasn't enough so I bought some dyes. Then, last week I stumbled upon a really cheap record player at the second hand store... As a result I now have a forever stained bathroom floor and a few discs:

Gold line Diamond - https://www.dropbox.com/s/rksgcuhymjqs4tc/dia.jpg?dl=0
VIP Northman & Star Sidewinder - https://www.dropbox.com/s/4lte2a9byq2pe2l/tv.jpg?dl=0
C-line PD2 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/7gdwpc0w1p13huw/shari.jpg?dl

Few stencil bleeds there but nothing major :)

That looks like a Christmas ornament.

Oh crud, did I say Christmas?! BANNED! :p

Sickness, DTP, pure sickness.
