Funhouse Mirkwood was a traveling funhouse and sideshow family that was founded in 1946 by Sir William Morris in Jacksonville, Florida and relocated to St. George, Utah in 1951. St George served as home base for the group of around 80 entainers, specializing in everything from balloon animal twisting to fire breathing. The funhouse itself was a twisting maze of mirrors and smoke, and served as the main attraction for the traveling clan. It was revered for how difficult it was to complete, and the labyrinth was altered nightly so that no two configurations were alike. Funhouse Mirkwood enjoyed plentiful success throughout the 1950's and traveled throughout the continental United States.
The funhouse was again forced to relocate in 1962 due to repeated fallout from the nearby Yucca Flats nuclear testing facility, and amid allegations that the funhouse was becoming too difficult to navigate and that numerous visitors had gone missing within the maze and never returned. William Morris announced that the new home for the funhouse was to be in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and the train Departed Utah in mid October. Unfortunately, the train never reached it's destination, believed to have derailed somewhere in central Wisconsin.
The 3rd annual 2015 Nightmare in WARPed Woods is being held in memory of those who likely perished in the accident. The WARPed woods is a twisting, dark labyrinth of disc golf holes that represents the winding halls of Funhouse Mirkwood.
October 24th, 2015 WARP presents: The Nightmare in WARPed Woods III - Escape From Funhouse Mirkwood. Our unique, fun Ace Race layout will feature 40 total holes, 20 to be played in the daylight and 20 to be played at night. If you're not aware, an ace race features shortened holes where everyone gets one shot per hole, attempting to get an ace or hitting the basket with your choice of disc. Glow supplies will be provided for all players, and all baskets and tee pads will be illuminated for the glow round. Cost is $25 and includes event entry and a fantastic player's pack complete with a limited edition disc provided by Gateway Disc Sports. Scoring will be as follows: 4 points for an ace, 2 points for a chain out, 1 point for a non-chain metal hit. All players of all skill levels are welcome to this event.
Mulligans will be available for purchase for $2 each or 3 for $5. Players wearing a costume for the event will receive 3 free mulligans. players can obtain a max of 6 mulligans.
There are great prize packages for the top 3 finishers overall and best costume. We will be holding a 50/50 raffle, prize raffle, award ceremony, and BYOB social hour following the event.
Register online at dgscene.com/thewarpnightmare. Check in at the event in Waupun County Park from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. First player's meeting is at 3:45 followed by shotgun tee off at 4:00. After the daylight round we will break until the second player's meeting around 6:00 pm. The glow round will begin around 6:15 pm. The awards ceremony will begin after final scores are taken and will be followed by the social hour. We will vacate the park at 10:45 pm.
