Top Player Ratings Over Time

Wysocki and McMahon barely remain at 1050 this update, McBeth drops below 1050 for the first time since his switch to Discraft.

no players >1050 for the first time in a number of years, McBeth on top at 1049.

ratings deflation causes? any/all of the below probably are factoring in (some temporarily)
  • changes made to courses on tour - no more Memorial type courses, generally better designed & optimized for Pro game (penalty areas/removal of gimme holes)
  • field quality higher because of touring card pros & tiered registrations = less casual players in the fields
  • tougher scoring conditions earlier this year (brand new courses/weather)

Competition possibly. Take KT in the final round at World's. Yes, she may have felt some pressure to not make the BIG errors, but she was in control and the competitive pressure was minimal.

OTOH, on the MPO side, it was a tug of war. Every throw counted and could change the event outcome. Tremendous competitive pressure caused some errors that cost strokes IMO.

All year long it has been like this in MPO. Makes what PM and EM did at the European Open more impressive.

There is also the pressure to perform like never before. Players are getting real money to perform, that 15 foot putt has a different feel to it. That creates internal pressure to perform.

Also harder to shoot high ratings on high SSA courses which have become the norm on tour. (See Freeman's criminally underrated round from last weekend.)

What should it have been rated?

With a system allowing for meaningful comparison of rounds from one course length to another it would imo belong among the 10 or so best of all time.

Kinda bummed this hasn't been updated in 3+ years https://www.pdga.com/ratings/top-10-best-rounds-ever-5-ssa-ranges-men-women

Probably need a new SSA tier at the top for >70. For MPO layout BCDGC had an SSA at ~71.5.

I think for quick comparison between SSA ranges some % adjustment could be applied to ratings based on the round SSA to put them all on nearly the same scale. Maybe (1+0.0025(SSA-(holes*3)))*(Round rating).

original -> % SSA adjusted

Freeman
1077 '22 BCDGC -> 1124

McBeth
1132 '13 Memorial (Fountain)-> 1129
1121 '13 Vibram (Maple Hill) -> 1139
1108 '18 DGLO 18 down -> 1119
1098 '19 WACO 18 down -> 1121
1108 '22 Memorial (Fountain) -> 1099
1092 '22 Champions Cup -> 1126
1073 '22 Idlewild R3 (SSA 68) -> 1110

McMahon
1090 '22 European Open R1 (SSA 64) -> 1117

McMahon/McBeth
1086 '22 European Open R2 (SSA 63) -> 1110

C. Dickerson/I. Robinson
1073 '22 Idlewild R2 (SSA 70) -> 1115

Round ratings are dependent on the field's propagator pool so some of these round ratings may be influenced by that. Feel free to point out flaws/further adjustments

Maybe the lack of much competitive pressure (European Open was only 18th in MPO field strength this year, a weaker tournament than any Elite Series stop and Silver Series like The Open at Belton and Beaver State Fling and Master's Cup according to StatMando) is what made it easy for them to accomplish such low scoring.

EO wasn't about the field, it was about the back and forth battle between Paul and Eagle.

Same as World's.

Ah gotcha. I thought you were making the claim that lower ratings was a result of increased competition, ergo less competition might have led to the higher ratings at EO.

No, strokes missed out on because the battle for the win was tight.

It's not new, just more common IMO.
