Vibram Birdie Bash (VBB) - 2014 Edition

We had our birdie bash in Keene, TX today. It was rainy and nasty, but still had a good turnout. We had a lot of non locals, so it went great overall. We had a couple of hiccups with a few of the packs, but overall it was all very easy to run.

Here's the pic of our winners. Managed to get most everyone that won something to stick around for the photo.

I'm curious how everyone else chose their Spirit Award winner. We chose a guy who came from out of town with both his sons. They both played in it and really seemed to enjoy it, even in spite of the rain. We made sure to give the kids some Vibram swag as well.

I played a BB in Cheyenne, WY in March. It was snowy, windy, sunny and cold, all at different times. A lot of fun with some great people. I like the format a lot and am looking forward to playing it on my home course in another month.

The Spirit Award was a unanimous decision to the gal who ran around the course during the second round with a bottle of whiskey for players to partake.

We are preparing for our Bash on May 10 and stumbled on this rule:
"If no points are scored on a hole, the closest to the pin after two throws earns a point."

Has this always been a rule? the guys that played previous events don't remember doing this?

Steve, can we as TD's remove this rule for our event?

Although this is the first I've heard of this rule, I like it. I know there are some holes at the course where I'm running mine (May 3rd at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville, Mo!!), where it's very difficult for most folks to have a legit birdie shot....particularly lesser skilled players. Instead of folks having the mentality of "might as well skip this hole", everyone would still have a chance of at least a point on each hole.

I didn't notice that rule and thus didn't run ours with that rule in place.
Granted, we were on a really short 9-hole course, so that made it easy.

What happened next?

Discs will be listed after those are finished.

I ran our VBB yesterday and it was well received. Everyone had a blast. We will do this event again. All packs come pre-packaged making it a breeze to run... no need to figure out who ordered what. Disc Nation did a great job on the packaging for Vibram.

We had two packs missing the extra disc and one Unlace that has a severe dent in the top... but everything else was TOP SHELF! THANKS VIBRAM!

What did you you do as the TD in that case?

Yea the Ctp rule was sprung on me about 7 holes into our event. I don't remember seeing it last year, didn't remember seeing it when I printed the info when I registered the birdie bash. I told the one card who knew about it that I didn't know about it and since it was not stated in players meeting I would not enforce it. I understand doing it for round 2 when the card is competing against each other for round prizes. When we drew up our player cards we tried to our best in round one to keep players close to how we thought they would play. That would of gave a good advantage to a player who would of been put on a "bad card". One average player on a card with newbs could really rack up points while a competive card would split points

We all wrote down two names then the TD used his discretion on who to pick. It went to a guy in his mid 20's who came out and only had 3 discs himself before this tournament. he doubled his discs he has today alone  Anyways, the first round he only shot a 4, and the second only a 5, but he stayed positive the whole time and was there to just have a good time and that was awesome. He def deserved it.

On a side note, here my goodies form the bash.

Was a really fun time! I look forward to trilogy challenge and ace race!

If an average player had a bad enough first round to end up on a card with a bunch of new players, that average player is likely to win their card without the CTP scoring rule. To me, the only thing on the line, truly, is the Champion disc. In that case, I really like the idea of the rule. It makes it so anyone can viably have a shot at winning the Champion disc.

Is it possible someone could sandbag to win the event?....sure. It'd be a seriously douchebag move, particularly for an event like this, but it could happen.

Could this result in someone who is not a top player winning the event?....definitely. That's the part I like about it. It could truly be anyone's event to win.
