When your course is overrun by yahoos

Carry your cell phone instead of a gun and report the yahoos that cause trouble.

If you take you gun to the course, you need to ask yourself, "Is that the hill you want to die on?"

If you shoot someone, or even threaten someone with a gun, you might just be turning your life upside down. Its not worth it. Most of you guys sound like you are young(In your 20's). Once you get over 30, your views change, and you realize that you have to choose your battles carefully. That is the motto I live buy. Before I get really to stir up some s**t, I ask my self "Is that the hill you want to die on?" Then I think long and hard about it. Just remember, you can't play disc golf in jail.

I am 29 years old and been around guns my whole life, even shot competitively for a few years. I would only draw my weapon if I felt I was in danger. I carry it because I don't ever want to die by someone elses hand. If I do, I will at least take the other guy with me.

Remember there are plenty of idiots that won't be detered by threatening to call the cops, or buy having a camera, or by being the bigger guy. The lead in the barrel is for those idiots.

Is nobody else scared by this comment. If someone had a gun in this situation then someone may have been shot = many ruined lives for the shooter and the shot. Without the gun the situation ended with no injuries and everybody continues their lives like normal. Why, with this situation as an example, would you advocate owning a gun. I think this is the perfect example as to why nobody should be allowed to carry pistols, especially to a public park.

What if this moron didn't stand down? What would you do; run, hide, get your ass beat? I chose to protect my self with whatever force necessary. Remember, having a gun doesn't mean you have to shoot them. Usually the display of force is enough to quell the situation. The aggressor is free to choose to either stand down or take a bullet to the center of mass. His choice. I wouldn't feel an ounce of guilt, because it is in his hands.

Does this post scare you?...It might if you are Kanadian.

Thats what I'm sayin'.... That is what I am talking about.

I'm 32 years young and I am not some young punk with an itchy trigger finger or a death wish. I'm not "Gangsta". I am not tryin' to be the "internet tough-guy" either. All I am saying is in some of these public parks you got robbers, thugs, hoodlums and just straight up @$$holes that could be very mentally unstable and/or on some strange stuff and they dont give a flyin' fart if you die by their hands! Prison is not a deterrent to these people. In probably 97% of cases of threats you can just diffuse the situation by walking away, which I have no problem doing. But should someone threaten my life (not with words but with action) they leave me with no choice but to preserve my life by possibly taking theirs.

Oh and TorontoJack, where do you get off calling me a "racist"? A stereotyper(is there such a word?) possibly, but a racist? Where in my post did I talk about anything about race or genetics? We are both Caucasoids (if that is you in the pic) and how can 2 persons of the same race be racist towards one another? Canada is a country not an ethnicity.

This thread is getting a bit ridiculous, but entertaining none the less. I know the next big move for disc golf. PDGA+NRA: look at the synergy! Disc wielding gun lobbyists unite! :)

Seriously though, in terms of violence on the course...walk away, 90% of the time it works all the time:)

Chain-addicted your right, 'racist' was the wrong word to describe your rant. But it was insulting. As well, I didn't like the fact that you put a weak argument in my mouth (the one about banning baseball bats) and made fun of me for it. I would be happy if people used baseball bats to defend themselves rather than guns. You can't miss you target and hit a child a mile away. If you hit someone, you can now run to get a cop and no one is dead. Better for everyone.

This being said I was surprised to see the number of people that felt the same way as you. Fear is a powerful emotion and it is important to feel safe (especially once you have a family of your own). If I lived in the U.S. I may myself become fearful because, as you have mentioned, anyone of these people could have a gun themselves. That's just a mentality I have never experienced. I have never walked down the street worried if people have guns with them, because i know they don't. I do sometimes carry a pocket knife, and that knife, combined with my black-belt friend would make my group quite possibly the most dangerous on the Toronto island. So, as you see we are very similar, but I will never have to deal with guns in my life. But I guess you do everyday and that shocked me is all.

Its cool, my Caucasian brother. I respect your opinion on the whole "concealed carry" issue. Its not that I was trying to make fun of you it was I was just trying to show you a point. I am done talking about it. If you would like to speak to me more about gun rights or my other Libertarian leanings you can send me a message. I am done hi-jacking this thread.

Soooooooooooo........ until then, as your French-Canadian neighbors over in Montreal say, "Au revoir!"

If you guys are playing courses were you need a gun, you are playing the wrong courses.

This is very true, and I dont carry a gun and never will, but you never know when you will run into a crazy, and in that case I would be happy to have law abiding citizens that might be able to save my a$$.

I am 30 years old, and I can remember back in high school, there was a hang out everyone went to in a parking lot. On one side of the lot, you had the country boys with their pick-ups and gun racks, and on the other side, you had the guys with systems and decked out Escorts (lol) and we all had our differences, but overall, I would say they left each other alone and in general, I grew up in a good town.

One night though, a group of guys from out of town showed up wanting to fight one of the guys that hung out with the Escort group; which I happened to be over there at the time. Knowing the guy they were after had started crap, everyone just kinda let him walk out there to face down what better have been just the one guy or I am sure it would have been an all out brawl.

Sh!t was talked back and forth until the guy from out of town, lifted his shirt to flash that he had a handgun tucked in his pants waste trying to threaten all of us, and I think his boys he rolled in with probably did as well.

Next thing you know, from across the lot here here a bunch of truck doors slamming then a bunch of shotguns get pumped and the farmboys suddenly had everyones attention.

The guys from out of town left real quick.

Now I know, avoid the situation would be best but, I was there with friends as a kid as we always were every night, hanging out and having fun. I had no idea the type of people the one guys had pissed off and I found myself in a group of people out of nowhere getting a gun brandished at me. The guy using the gun it wouldnt matter if it was legal to own or not because it was already illegal that he had it tucked in his pants like that. I am so thankful for the guys that had the shotguns, which they were carrying legaly or I really think a few of us would have been gunned down just for being near the one guy.

I think you guys are not thinking this through. You can run into crazy people anywhere. I drive and unload a truck at night, alone, with nothing but a long steel rod with a hook on it for protection. Sometimes your best weapon is using your eyes and ears. You start throwing in gun play, and you might be getting in way over your head.

The best thing to do is a situation like that is keep a cool head. 16 years ago, I had just cashed a check, and I had about $350 in my pocket. I had to take a major leak, so I stopped at a gas station where some shady people hang out. I got approached by three men asking me for money, and they started to really get close to me.

I started talking about how screwed up the government was, and how I wanted to move to the moon. These guys looked at me like I was out of my mind, and most people don't want to tangle with someone that is crazier than they are, so they said "Its cool man, have a good day" and they walked away. I had nothing to defend myself with, but my brain , and it worked.

Most people don't want to mess with someone who they think is nuts and unpredictable. That is why when someone walks up on me in the middle of the night, I act like I am going to have them for lunch or something, and they tend to leave pretty quickly.

You start flashing guns on the course, someone might see you defending yourself, and not know whats going on, and the next thing you know, you are surrounded by the cops, and going downtown to explain yourself.

There is a show on Discovery Channel called "Surviving Disaster" and it really teaches you how to use your brain in bad situations. I suggest you all give that a watch. I have learned quite a bit on how to think on your feet from watching that show.

You always have to be able to out think your attacker or person bothering you. You can't just go on instinct. Most cops will tell you , that the worst thing you can do is try to attack back. You have to out smart the person.

One thing that has worked in the past is , when someone gets in your face, say something like, hey why are we wasting time here, lets go see if we can go find some hot girls somewhere. It takes there mind off of you, and can defuse a situation, and even make someone laugh.

Brains or brawn my friend. That is how you make it. You can't fight them all. There will always be someone bigger and stronger than you are.

I like this. Think first. Then think again. Think things through. I don't carry a gun, and probably never will, but if you want to carry one, that's cool too. If you do carry one, you should still follow the brilliant advice above.

I usually don't carry a weapon (besides z discs) but now I'm considering my k bar. It's a knife that marines use. It's so big I fear it over getting shot

play early in the morning?

my home course is full of kids, tdd's, drunks and just plain dickbags, none of which have the drive to get an early morning round of golf in.

plus getting there early makes it more likely to find plastic left behind from the night before.

Play before 3:00, thats when most kids are in school, and well, most people older than that are not the people you want to avoid.

I ran into some yesterday at the course. I was playing alone, and I caught up to 6 young guys (in their early 20's) playing together. They offered to let me play through, and I asked if I could join them since I was playing solo. They said yes, and were very nice and all introduced themselves to me.

These guys played very fast, and three holes later, we caught a very slow group of 8 players. From the looks , you could tell they were newer players, and were playing quite slow. We asked nicely if we could pass them on the next hole, and they cocked an attitude and said "You got just as many people as we do". They also all gave us pretty dirty looks. The main guy in my group was really pissed, and told him to just let it go. They were not worth getting into a fight. I also told him, if a fight broke out, I was not going to be joining in.

We decided to just skip a hole, and it worked out just fine. We were burning daylight, and we were able to finish the last hole right at dark. The slow group ended up walking off the course at dark.

The guys I played with ended up being a fun group to play with, and I became fast friends with one of them, and we exchanged numbers so we could meet up for another round in the future. I even did a disc trade with one of them right there on the course.
