Field to Test Your New Plastic

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Nine holes on the back lot of Dynamic Discs HQ. Nothing picturesque, nothing super memorable, and almost entirely open field throws. But let's be honest, you didn't come here to play a high level course. You came here to tour the facility and immediately go outside and test out some new plastic.

AMENITIES: For the course itself there really are none. No benches, no trash cans, no restrooms, no water available. Of course you can access those needs in the DD HQ a few hundred feet away, but as for the course itself, there are none.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: In typical DD fashion the signage is excellent with a large full color course map, large well done informative full color tee signs with all relevant information, and they are easy to spot from a far when trying to locate the next tee. Baskets were Red/White/Blue Veterans in good condition and there was a practice basket located next to the parking lot and adjacent to Hole #1 tee. Tee pads were concrete, flat and grippy, a little on the small side but outside of the long Hole #9 there really wasn't much need for a big run up.

DESIGN: Minus maybe Hole #2 (which plays through a gap in the woods uphill to a sloping green beside the warehouse) and Hole #3 (which plays down another tight wooded gap back towards the open field part of the property) this course is VERY wide open. There is not much in the way of wow holes or stunning course design. Instead it feels much more like a practice course that offers set distances that one would need to dial and allows you to "test" new plastic on very open lines at that distance. Multiple Ace Runs throughout the first 6 holes with no danger. Unless it has rained heavily recently, no water features on the course. Nothing to really add visual beauty.

EXTRAS: Minus a little shaggy rough on the sides of Holes #2 and #3 you should be able to try out all your new plastic and old favorites without much fear of losing a disc. Plenty of ace runs to empty your bag on if you wish. Good warm up location if you want a flat open field and some privacy before going to play a round and Jones or Champions Landing which are only a few minutes away.

Cons:

VARIETY: The two wooded holes are the best thing this course has going for it, outside of that, the other 7 are bland, stock, and monotonous. They definitely serve a purpose though but it makes this feel much more like a dedicated practice area than a course.

DRAINAGE: The low spots on the course pool with water, Hole #3 fairway, Hole #6 basket, and several spots in the fairway coming up Hole #5 are the worst offenders. If Hole #3 is flooded, you will have to walk back down Hole #2 fairway and out and around the woods and enter through Hole #4's fairway to get to #3's basket. It was flooded the day I played and added quite a bit of time to what should have been a very quick play through.

MOWING: The field the course is in is well maintained, however the property lines, which most of the baskets are tucked up against, are jungles. Thick enough to knock the disc down and keep from penetrating very far at all, but a hassle to putt from. Worst offender is probably Hole #6. Most of the other baskets would take a serious shank or over power to get into the thick stuff, but I can see it happening.

BLIND SHOTS: There are a couple blind shots and potential to hit other people. A shank off Hole #1 to the right could hit those on or waiting to play Hole #2, Hole #4 has a blind left to right shot into the green which is also the opening to the main field the rest of the course is in. Hole #9 borders the parking lot and fence row of industrial equipment.

Other Thoughts:

This "course" borders the line between practice area and disc golf course. It will not wow you with beauty or difficulty. It is almost entirely flat, without visual features, and is uninspiring. Only the hard core course baggers and those visiting the DD HQ should consider driving out of the way for this one. And even then, I could see people passing.
