Henning City Park

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is a 9 hole course located in a city park. The course is impressive, considering the population of Henning is 860 persons, and there are no towns within 20 miles of Henning with a larger population. The primary attraction of the park are the baseball/softball fields. Holes 1 and 2 go around the edge of the primary baseball field. Hole 2, which runs along the west side of the baseball field, is the only fairway with numerous trees and the only hole that is considered to be a technical hole. Most of the course is wide open, with fairways that have no trees or few trees along the edge of the fairway. The openness of this course provides more sunlight, and allows the wind or breezes to dry the course out at a much faster pace following periods of heavy precipitation. The month of June 2024 was a wetter than normal June for Minnesota, and just prior to playing this course, I heard a person in a local cafe comment that their rain gauge measured 5 inches of rain 3 nights prior to the day I played this course, and there had been another rainfall the night before I played this course, yet I observed no standing water anywhere on this course. Meanwhile, I observed standing water on fairways on some of the other courses I played that are located in the region.

Cons:

For each tee, there is a wooden pole with the hole number, but no sign to display the distance from the tee to the basket. The tee pads are grass. Hole 3 is 671 feet in length with no trees and no change in elevation. Beginner players, players who lack form and arm speed, and players over the age of 50 will find Hole 3 to be overwhelming. Due to the number of wide open shots with few to no trees, players may find the course to be difficult if not impossible to play on windy days.

Other Thoughts:

As I mentioned before, I found the course to be impressive considering the small population of the area, and that Henning is miles away from any major highway. The course is likely played only be locals or visitors who come to the area for the nearby lakes.
