Pros:
The course has been improved since earlier reviews. Tees and baskets for 3 and 4 have been moved (uploaded map is incorrect), and those are now low ceiling shots (or roller, or hyzer-spike - you have to get creative on these holes - there are options.
There are now tee signs for almost every hole (the holes that have changed are being replaced).
It is mowed regularly, the trash-cans are emptied, it is well-maintained.
Usually not busy at all - busiest on Saturday night from what I've seen. Half of my rounds there I had the course to myself, or there was one other person or group I barely saw.
The first hole is wide open and short, but that makes for a good warm-up hole, and every hole after that has at least some danger and something unique about it.
2 the basket is tucked tight against the woods-line - go long and you will have to scramble for par most likely or take a penalty if you go too deep. Still a pretty easy BH hyzer along the woods for most players.
3 and 4 are tougher, described earlier. Then you go across the road and there are some slightly severe elevation changes there, including a hole with a mini-death-putt.
6 is a fun downhill BH hyzer drive.
7 is probably the longest hole, with another downhill drive into a tree-lined valley. The up shot is uphill and through a wooded gap at the waist. The basket is on up the hill in the open.
8 is along the curved woods line, and wraps around it from left to right. You need a tight hyzer FH or a big BH anny to have a birdie chance, as the pin is tucked tight around the corner (very tight). It's wide open on the outside for a pretty easy par, but if you want a birdie chance you have to wrap a serious curve around the tree line.
9 is a long finishing hole, uphill the last third of the way. The slope leading down to the reservoir runs along the right (you don't want to go down there), but the hole is wide open, save for the green, which has 3 or 4 trees surrounding the basket. Bomb it, hope for a good angle, try to get it close and take a par (at least that's my philosophy on this hole, but I drive less than 300).
I think it's a damn good course for the Mt. Vernon/Fredericktown area. Worth visiting if you are in the area, and a great course for locals.
Cons:
As of this date, there are many downed trees due to a storm early in the week. Baskets and teeboxes are unaffected, but there is a large downed tree in front of the 9th basket. Other downed trees on the periphery of the course, as well as downed limbs throughout, may catch some discs (but should not generate a penalty stroke to get relief IMO). No doubt this will be cleaned up within a month of this review or sooner.
Other Thoughts:
UPDATE - While some of the downed limbs (but not all of them) have been cleaned up (possibly by players), that big-ass downed tree in front of the final basket is still there. Honestly, at this point I just consider it an obstacle, and don't try to get relief from it unless I have to climb onto it or something super unsafe - not gonna break my leg playing it from the marker. It should be removed though. It's ugly, it's not right up against the basket but is well inside C1 and it's width extends to well into C2. It is tall enough to block your view of the basket. It basically makes it impossible to approach from the middle (or close to the middle), and you have to try to hook an upshot that will get you a long putt to a basket that is already guarded by a couple trees on both sides in C1. It adds a degree of difficulty to a green that didn't particularly need it (although it does make it interesting).
Also, they don't seem to empty the trash-cans enough, which are at the start of the course. People come there for several other purposes - fishing, ATVing, even met some guy with an antena array in the back of his pick-up - I talked to him and he was a HAM radio enthusiast. Point is the trash cans fill up pretty quick. I'm guessing they are emptied weekly, but could do with twice per week. Also, I'm finding a lot of plastic bottles and cans on the course. Next time I go there solo I'm taking a trash-bag, but it would be nice if they had a sign posting some rules of etiquette for the DG course, including the DGers code (leave the course better than you found it).
