Nice College Course - Very Near Home

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Excellent Baskets
-Turf tee pads
-Good use of existing trees for interest
-Quick play

Cons:

-Walking path in play in a few areas
-The walk from #7 basket to #8 tee could interfere with the fairway of #4
-People fishing in lake could be in throwing area for #9

Other Thoughts:

I will play this course a lot..,it's literally 10 blocks from my house.

DMACC was the location for Worlds MANY years ago but has been without a course for some time. This is a nice public 9-hole course in Ankeny, one of the few in the whole Des Moines metro area. This is not some championship course, but a quick play along the east side of the lake. When I first thought of this area, I didn't envision much of anything for obstacles, but the designer here has worked around many trees my mind had discarded. #2 is a mostly tunnel shot and there are some trees to work around on #5, #6 and #7. The course finishes with a tee along the lake pitching up and over some tall grass and under some trees for a finish. The turf tees are nice, I just hope the upkeep in the Iowa weather is good. Wind CAN be a factor throughout the course. Tee signs are yet to come but will add nicely. There are a few hazards that do concern me a bit. The course is near the very popular walking path in several locations. The transition from the #7 basket to the #8 tee is passing very near the #4 basket, so something to stay alert on. I can envision some busy times here, was pretty busy the first weekend it was available. Overall playable for most ages (although shorter folk may have some issues with the heights of the #3 and #6 baskets). Go enjoy a quick round, or to warm up before a round at Heritage. You might see me out there with as close to home as this one is. A nice add to the amazing selection of courses in the Des Moines metro area.
