Tyger's Roar 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nice beautiful park in another great neighbor hood. Very family friendly, there is stuff for everyone if you all like the outdoors. Park reminds me of Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte.

-Benches on almost if not every hole. There are trash cans around the course which is good enough.
-Nice tee signs and tee pads. Tee pads are brick I believe.

-Nice 28 chain baskets in perfect shape.

-Life is a box of chocolates. You don't know what you will get. This course is all the variety that is wanted and it's perfectly mixed in. Lengths range from about sub 200' to over 77' feet. Good use of elevation, good mix of open/wooded holes, clever use of OB on #10 and #17. #10 to the right side of the logs to the right side of the fairway is OB and the OB rule of #17 make it fun with its risk/reward. The hole is over 400' and in the fairway, there is a clear area, not grassy that is in bounds and the green is surrounded by rocks. This is exactly like a roped hole in a tournament.

-#10 is my favorite. It's a downhill par 4 over 500' that is OB outside of the logs in the ground. You can play safe and throw left of the gap straight ahead of the tee and be in a little area of planted trees just starting to grow, or anhyzer. The pro way would be to clear the gap ahead which is very thin and your disc will hopefully stay straight. This is a pretty easy par if you play it safely and you can even birdie it that way but if you screw up, potentially in the first 100', you could face a 5 or 6. The green is also surrounded by low bushes.

-Nice basket locations. Such as rollaway greens, #7's basket is elevated on a bunch of rocks, #17's green being surrounded by rocks in which you have to be inside of, etc.

-The front nine is more of an accuracy game, #4 stands out to mind. It's a slightly downhill par 3 that's around 400'. Basket is tucked into the woods and the hole has limited fairway. Both the left and right sides can be punishing but a 2 is possible. The back nine is mostly for distance but still demands a TON of accuracy. Everything is birdieable, but so much can go wrong.

Cons:

-#16 has no tee pad yet and the hole is rough right now. Lot of tall grass and the shot is blind which makes it difficult to see where it landed. Tip. Throw to the right where it isn't rough out there, look at the shot before you throw. Also an irritating hole. Kinda leaves you scratching your head saying "Come on man." It's an up and over par 4, but OB on both sides. So lost disc potential is high.

-Artifical OB. Too much and little room for error.
Some may consider #17 a little goofy because of its OB. Same with #11. Hole 11 is a long uphill par 4. But wide open so you see a really corny idea, Right of the trees to the right side is OB. #13 is a disaster whenever the OB is in play. Both sides and primarily open. Best of luck to you on a windy day.

-Few weird fairways. Hole 8 comes to mind, it's just a "Do everything you can to par." It's moderately long and uphill with trees randomly spaced out.

-#2 gets flooded sometimes.

Other Thoughts:

-This course starts well, ends well. #1 is a nice midrange anhyzer that's slightly wooded. #18 is out in the open and plays uphill all the way. An open 675' par 4 seems doable but a 3 here is very well cherished because this hole has its risks and many challenges. The tall stuff and the excess OB gets pretty aggravating and there are some odd holes out here. I loved this course at first because I saw so much potential, but instead they made it a little less appealing.

-Signature hole: I don't know if #15 is a signature hole, it's definitely punishing without having much OB. #14 could easily be the signature hole. Very fun tee shot on the top of a hill.

-Love it or hate it: #9. Short ace run that goes through a VERY thin gap and out in the open. This is maybe the shortest on the course. It's only about 200' but it has its defense.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice tight fairways on the front 9.
Nice long bomber shots on the back 9.
Nice wide and long tee pads.
Easy to navigate once you find the first hole.
A challenge for intermediate and Advanced players.
Hole 17 is a joy to play. risk vs, reward on that hole.

Cons:

A few limbs and trees could use some cutting here and there but not many. The dead tree on hole 10 needs to go.
Almost too hard for rec. players.
Maybe a little too easy for pros.

Other Thoughts:

I love the course and i will be playing there a couple times a week if not more. I would like to see more tee pads put in on the course Longer and harder for the pros and shorter and easier for the rec and new players. It would also give you other ways to play the course so it is not the same every time. Also some split pars on some holes like hole 6 pro (3) am (4) hole 18 pro (4) am (5) hole 11 Pro (3) am (4). Longer tee pads with not so much of an straight shot will make this course harder for the pros and shorter tee pads will make it more enjoyable for the rec players. Also as they get better they can move back to the next tee pads. All in all if they didn't change a thing I would still love the course and Spartanburg County Parks is doing a great job in making the upstate a disc golf destination.

beginner here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some challenging holes through the woods on the first 9
Long range holes to just let it rip on the last 9
Nice tee pads and benches to rest
Great park with lots of space and plenty of parking

Cons:

People let their dogs use the bathroom on the course and dont pick up after them!

Other Thoughts:

As a complete beginner to disc golf this course is probably way over my head but its close by and its fun. Hopefully playing on such an advanced course will help me to improve me game. And about finding the first hole if you come in from gano road make the first left and follow that around you will see the first tee off on the left bout 1/4 mile or so.

Great new course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 29, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Large, extra wide tee pads.
- Beautiful, informative tee signs.
- Bag stands.
- Plenty of benches. (you'll need them)
- Good mixture of woods and open, grassy holes.
- The fairways through the woods have tunnels wide enough to reward an accurate shot.
- Very scenic.
- Some elevated tees and elevated baskets add to the fun factor.
- Course is easy to navigate (after you find the first tee).

Cons:

- Long! 7 holes are over 400 feet.
- Longer! 5 of those are over 500 feet.
- Longest! 2 of those are over 600 feet.
- Longer-er-est! 1 of those is over 1000 feet (yup, that's 3 zeros).
- Lots of luck finding the first tee. (If you're traveling east on Hwy. 296-Reidville Road-toward Spartanburg, go past the first park sign. Turn left at the second sign onto Gano Drive. Turn left into the park on Curveball Drive, and another left at the first stop sign, Knuckleball Lane. Look for the 18th basket on a hill to your left. The first tee is also on the left, a little further down the road.)

Other Thoughts:

You big bombers who have been complaining that the courses in the upstate are too short.. this Bud's for you! Many of you will consider the course length (7305 feet) to be a pro instead of a con. However, for us older players, or young kids, it can be a challenge. Still, I had a great experience and hope to return soon. There are just a few things I would recommend to make the course perfect:
- Add alternate, shorter tee locations, and/or amateur (red) pars, (ie Shoally Creek in Boiling Springs). It makes you feel a lot better when you make a par instead of a boggie.
- The course is located in a very large baseball/softball complex with lots of signs directing you to the various fields. However, we found no signs directing you to the disc golf course. After driving around for a while we started seeing some baskets and got out and walked. Thirty minutes later we still hadn't found the found the first tee. Fortunately some maintainance workers came along and gave directions. So, more park signs needed.
- The only other thing I would recommend is bus shuttle service on hole #15 (1000 ft.)

ONE OF THE UPSTATE'S BEST 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Gigantic tee pads.
-Great Innova baskets.
-Diverse layout.
-Challenging course.
-Dedicated to disc golf.
-Easy access and plenty of parking.
-Great design.
-Fun and Inviting course, park, and area.

Cons:

-Pads were painted and some weren't scraped that great. -Could be a slip issue when rainy or on early morning dew days.
-Some pads fall off into a ditch at the front which could of been resolved by moving them back a few feet. This is more of an 'in your head' issue than anything else.
-A tree here or there could be cut down.....lol But seriously, my only gripe would be to trim the tree dead center of 10's driving line. IF the row of trees down in the fairway on the right are truly an OB line to the right then most are going to hyzer around the right, avoid the middle, and play safe. If the tree was trimmed, most would gamble the middle, leaving some amazing bomb shots and potential for more OB shots going right.

There are no other issues I have!!!!

Other Thoughts:

This course is amazing and Spartanburg Recreation is really kicking it in gear with this course and two other upcoming courses.

This course does not play with that repetitive feel.

Every hole feels unique and although challenging, all holes are a heck of a lot of fun to play.

This is a must play in the Upstate and the flagship course for the soon to be 'MECCA' of disc golf in SC.
