"Whippet Good" for beginner and rec play!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Whippets Run DGC is a 9er that completely fills the back wooded area of a small urban park in Lansing, MI. It keeps well away from a playground and other park amenities.

The first 8 holes here have fairways that are wooded, but well groomed and fairly wide. There is a nice mix of fairway shapes cut into the woods here. The last hole is a little more open, playing along the boundary between the wooded area and the main park lawn. All distances are between 200' and 275', making this a great place for beginners and rec players to practice. Solo players can knock this one out in 20 mins or so, but the course is laid out so that you can play even less than 9 holes if really short on time.

The baskets are Chainstars in fine shape.

The tee pads are concrete, but very small. They are basically only large enough to stand and throw - which I didn't mind for this course, but something to be aware of. The tee signs are also small, but have all of the needed info. There are also two other items hanging on each tee sign post: a "trash can" which is literally just a kitchen size trash bag, and a green and white painted wood silhouette of an animal. It looked like a dog in different poses - sitting, jumping, etc. My instinct is that this is the Whippet dog breed and that the course is named after that.

Other signage is good too for the most part. Hole 3 has a double Mando and drop zone well marked. Dedicated Next Tee signs are installed where needed, in addition to having the next hole indicated on previous tee signs. There is another small sign near the first tee explaining the general rules of disc golf, and a few specific rules for this course. There is no course map, but the navigational signage is so good that I can't really complain.

A few picnic tables are scattered around.

Cons:

Hole 8 plays next to a city street. It seemed to be a very quiet street at least.

Flat terrain, all hole distances within a 75' range less than 300', and 8 of 9 wooded equals out to not a ton of variety overall, and not much challenge for advanced players.

The only spot where I could have used a navigational aid is at the parking lot directing players back to hole 1. You can see hole 9's basket at the edge of the woods, but the course sign is a bit more hidden. A practice basket between the parking lot and first tee would point towards the beginning of the course, while also allowing players to warm up.

No porta potty.

Other Thoughts:

This is a solid beginner course that I'd play all the time if I lived nearby. I wish I had a course like this near where I do live, actually. It's not worth going too far out of your way for, but "Whippet Good" if you're in the area!
