Hey guys,

Posted over in the technique forum yesterday as I am just starting to dive into form. Couldn't wait to get out to play to film, so I did some of the towel practice.

It is amazing how much a video can help you realize what you are doing wrong.

I am practicing the stand still throw and noticed how stiff I am and my upper body definitely throws before my lower body comes through. Any additional critiques are valuable!

That towel should be hanging down loose until your hand comes into your chest area, then accelerate. Your towel is flying/accelerating from the get go of your reachback. Try the water bottle drill, same concept.

Thanks! I'll go practice that feeling, wasn't even paying attention to that. I had one other video from earlier too, which seemed to have a little better hanging of the towel. My footwork just felt off on this one.

Your front foot should be planted before your arm/disc/towel starts moving forward. The whip should also be more forward than rotational.

Hey guys! Have been practicing a good bit and have increased my back hand significantly. I can get out to about 330' with a good rip on my blizz wraith, but that is my plateau at the moment. Had a chance to video tape a few throws, albeit they were poor, but shows some of my form.

My biggest concern was that I am not having my elbow go through first. I have changed my grip to mimick Avery Jenkins in that the thumb is bent, which is allowing me to feel the rip out much better.

But I can't believe how my elbow doesn't come through first at all!! Definitely something to work on. I'll have a few more videos to throw up as they upload.

Get your left arm down and to your side. What you are doing with it now isn't helping things.

Your elbow does not extend forward at all. The disc should come to your right pec and your hand should be on the outside of the disc with your elbow pointed toward the target.
 
You're not getting your elbow forward because you aren't making a motion to allow it. Your not pulling the disc straight from through your body, your bringing it around (rounding) and starting from the reach back. You need to bring it into your chest.

Your also landing WAY open. You need to be closed. Your front foot should be landing closer to the left side of the tee box, like a left handed baseball batter trying to hit to left field. Right now its not even landing even, your landing to the right, and how you aren't falling over doing so I have no idea. You get no power with your hips that way. Watch where Pauls foot lands in this video compared to where your foot lands:

Yeah it is amazing how I am not moving my elbow through, yet I concentrate on doing it every throw lol. Good thing I video'ed myself or I would have never known. Thanks forthe links and back to the drawing board!
 
Your reachback is too high and the disc is nose up in your grip alignment. Swing back under...let your arm/disc hang from your body like a wet towel and use your body to swing/toss the arm/disc into the backswing. When I hit the top of my backswing I feel like the disc is around my navel/center, not up high at the shoulder like yours is.

When you go to plant your front foot it's spinning out on the way down instead of maintaining a shift from behind you. You end up swinging over top/ahead your front leg. Watch how Will's front foot plants without turning forward i.e. crushes the can:



Do the "from behind you" just like he does and stop just like he does, feel that little bounce/shift:

Thanks I will watch these again! It seems so simple when you watch it, but implementing is difficult. Good to know about reaching too high...all my local friends continued to tell me to reach higher on my back swing so that is why I started it. I'll try dropping it closer to my stomach.
 
You're also dragging your body forward, it's a problem I had too. I know you're going through a slow practice swing compared to McBeth X-stepping and crushing this shot, but...

I screen captured each video right as the front heel touches down. You can see you are still fully on your back instep. You're planting your heel and then using that to drag your body into the rotation. Compared to McBeth, he actively shifted forward and is stopping himself/accepting momentum with his plant foot. This is as close to the same instant as possible compared to your video, and you can see all his weight is coming forward and off of his rear foot already.

^If you put a sheet of ice under your right foot you wouldn't really go anywhere (you'd likely spin around and fall). McBeth would slide forward quite a ways...then probably fall. Heh.

But think it that way a bit...have to transfer that weight into the plant.

Really appreciate the feedback and back to the practice. It is crazy how it feels like the weight is shifting but the video shows it not. I'll get back at it after watching all these videos, get some practice in and post some more.
 
Question for you guys! In the slow mo of Paul that Slowplastic shared, his hips never point away from the basket, they seem to stay directed right towards the camera. His head also never turns away from the basket. For example, if you look a my videos I'm 180 degrees away from the throwing target.

Should I stop rotating so much and focus more on just the weight shift?

New videos from today... Can't believe the amount I round and feel like none of the practice has done anything! Any particular drills to help me stop the rounding, maybe the door frame drill over and over?

After reviewing them a few times, I think I turn my upper body too much on my throws? My whole back is aligned away from the basket where McBeth pretty much keeps his shoulders aligned to the target.
