Worth it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 2, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fantastic course. Well designed and maintained. Beautiful scenery. Makes you bring your "A" game. Great elevation changes everywhere. Let's you just rip the disc on several holes. Provides great challenge on others with blind shots, tight gaps, and mandos.

Cons:

Tee boxes. All dirt and RR ties. The dirt is not level and can twist the ankle if your not careful. Bring your hiking boots and tie them tight.

Other Thoughts:

Worth that 1/2 mile walk to the very intimidating first tee

Superb Mountain course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is very well maintained and the baskets seem to get changed around often. All baskets are clearly marked and each tee box has a picture of potential basket spots. A challenging, technical course with lots of variety incorporating uphill shots, downhill shots, lots of trees and the potential for horrific rolls. Beautiful scenery throughout the course and you're getting a nice work-out while discin'.

Cons:

It's about a half mile walk to the car from the end/tee box 1.

Other Thoughts:

Well worth the drive up from the front range- Denver/Boulder/Co Springs. It seems to be getting more popular. Most of the times I've gone it has been empty, but the last time (a beautiful Sunday afternoon) there was pretty heavy congestion on all the holes.

Also, there are horse trails throughout the Beaver Ranch Rec Area, so keep an eye on your dogs if they're off the leash.

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Topography - lots of elevation change and slope
Aesthetics - Beautiful landscape, mixed conifer forest with a few Aspen groves
Pop. Density - hardly ever crowded, even on most crowded days plenty of space.

Cons:

Topography - get ready for a hike on first three holes
Not much else to complain about

Other Thoughts:

Wildland Urban Interface - be very careful with fire and beware that Jefferson County's fire-bans can include no outdoor smoking with heavy fines.

Worth all the hype? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

True definition of a mtn course, very fun, very challenging. My accuracy went way up after playing this course. Just a fun course to grab some buddies and spend the day in the mtns. Overall a great course.

Cons:

Only real con was the tee boxes. I actually found them to be a hazard, they are made of dirt and RR beams, and the box is easy to trip over the front if you are not carefull and the dirt on the tee box was a but uneven so footing was a challenge if you are trying to hit the disc at all.

Other Thoughts:

The holes were a bit shorter than I expected but made up for disctance with tight shots, i left the driver in the bag all day and scored very well. Great course one of the best

Pros:

The most beautiful course in Colorado, and one of the best course designs I have seen. As soon as you see hole 1 you think wow I have never done that before. By the end of the course you feel like a seasoned pro!

Cons:

Bring your hiking boots!

Other Thoughts:

Watch your discs carefully they are easy to loose here.

Always a Gem Year After Year 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great elevation changes throughout the course. Tons of tight shots. They do a great job of changing the pin positions during the year, which makes for a different experience every time out.

Cons:

The parking lot is far from the course. Some of the tee boxes have divots. If there were some rakes out on the course players could help keep them more maintained.

Other Thoughts:

Great new benches and signs.

Pros:

Friendly locations for baskets. Precision shots through groves of trees. Hole #17 is great for bombing discs off the tee pad, bring multiple drivers just for fun. Must play at least once.

Cons:

After hole #10 you can easily skip up to #13 if your not paying attention. There is a loose railroad tie on some of the tee pads. On hole #11 i slipped on an unattached shorter tie.

Other Thoughts:

breathtaking view.

Must Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Great course where you must decide to thread the needle, or go around. Or better yet, can't go around. You must throw straight
+Accuracy is rewarded
+it wasn't very crowded for us, and this course is so large even if their were more people would not have been a problem
+A scenic course and full of smells of pines
+2 600 ft+ holes.

Cons:

- It kicked my butt, not a horrible thing. But, your calves will burn
- the .5 mile hike to hole 1, on the walk out I assure you it feels like a mile

Other Thoughts:

I think it's worth the drive, one of the best i'v played on. Watch where your discs go, spent 30min looking for two discs... And tip.. DO NOT follow the road, we missed the first 3 holes walking up the road. once you cross the river, tee one is near a wooden bench..

We went and it was icy and hole one was covered in snow. Bring hiking boots, and lots of WATER! Do not skip water folks

Beautiful, Hilly, and Challenging. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful course set in a hilly and wooded park setting. There seem to be regular upgrades. We passed by a maintenance team today who told us they had just completed up upgrades to the outhouses. All of the tee boxes have nice benches and bag hangers. Even the pictures of the holes posted on this site are out of date. The tee markers have all been updated and are very nice. There are hole maps and photographs of pin location on every tee sign.
There are multiple tee locations at every hole which make for a dynamic course experience.
The course map available in the links/files section of this review page is very good. I downloaded it to my smartphone in case we needed it. The course is so well laid out that we only had to refer to the map once.

Cons:

Hilly and challenging. Coming from an elevation of 1000' made the course even more difficult for me. This is not a criticism of the course as much as a warning.
The walk from the parking lot to the fist/last hole is about .5 miles. After a day on the course, this seems much longer.
It can get very windy in the afternoon. Since this course is on the top of a hill, the wind can make for some interesting and exciting flight dynamics. Plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

We lost a yellow and black Yin/Yang disc in a large wood pile. It probably won't last too long there as there is a scheduled burn planned for next week.
Course takes 2 - 2.5 hours to play all 20 holes.
We played on a Saturday and only saw one other group. However it was cold and windy.
This course will kick your butt. However, you will love it. This course really is phenomenal.

Well designed with technical holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical course that will use a lot of your shots, has some good "tree" holes that will test your accuracy and head, and holes to show off your long drive. One of my favorite courses I've had the chance to play. I would recommend making a day out of it and throwing a couple rounds.

Cons:

the .5 mile walk to the first tee or worse to the parking lot after throwing a couple rounds. But well worth it.

what a workout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

where to start...played this course on the way back from Seattle to DFW....read lots of good reviews for this course and we were really looking forward to playing it...we played Phantom Falls about an hour before this one. Being from Texas, i was not used to the elevation changes and the weather. It was snowing and almost impossible to get through the first 3 holes. Once to hole 4 the holes begin to level out. However there were still major elevation changes. The views are absolutely amazing. Saw a few locals and they pointed us in the right direction for a few holes, but other that, the course is fairly easy to navigate. There was a rest area that had bathrooms and some picnic tables to rest...take advantage of that...all in all the course is amazing and if you are in the area its a must play. might as well play Phantom Falls after this one...both together are considered the "dirty 50"

Cons:

tee boxes we natural and had some fairly worn in divots, so be careful
if your not familar with the course try to print out a map or find a local to point you.
the walk to the first box is a joke. rumor is said that you can drive up to hole 12 and skip the walk
the first 3 holes are bascically uphill

Other Thoughts:

if there is snow on the ground, dont throw a white disc
make sure to wear hiking boots and not tennis shoes
overall being from Texas, i wasnt used to the whole mountain course and next time i will be better prepared

Beaver Ranch is Bomb 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The trails are clean and well maintained. They recently added new benches and plaques. the boxes are dirt but well maintained. There is no crowd or wait on week days. Privacy and beautiful weather is abundant. The clean and crisp mountain air makes it easy to throw and helps lifts your mood when you are lucky enough to view the sunset. Stop at the teepee and chill if you are tired.

Cons:

On the occasional throw discs can roll all the way down the hill or get stuck in the pines. it is time consuming if you play the whole course. But try to avoid the first three holes if you can, as they are virtually straight uphill.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your whole bag of discs as you will want them for hole 17.

If were smart, you'd play this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tight, Open, elevation changes, very imaginative, easy to navigate, great signs at every hole with distance and multiple placements, beautiful scenery, friendly people, Great variety; You might throw every shot in your bag, very challenging. Even though it's heavily wooded, it's not hard to keep an eye on your disc. Lots of debris from trees on the ground to keep your disc from rolling alllll the way back down the hill. Sometimes you're not so lucky :)
Too many goods things to say about this place.

Cons:

The drive to get there??
I guess the only thing I could do without is the strenuous elevation changes. The first two holes will make you want a power nap. But in all honesty it's not that bad. Just tough it out!

Other Thoughts:

Look, if you are an intermediate or advanced player, you will love this course, hands down. Beaver Ranch is the epitome of colorado disc golf. In the mountains hiking around, lots of trees and elevation changes. Tight tunnel shots followed by narrow tee offs into wide open meadows. Aspen and Pine trees. Fun Fun FUN!!

Bea-very Careful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

For those that are first time players to this course, know that it is very well marked and easy to navigate to the next and upcoming holes. This is an advanced course, with plenty of challenges ahead. Dog legs left and right and straight shots required. Great course to shoot your backhand and forehand shots. I personally loved hole 17 and found myself climbing back up to the top to reshoot. Plenty of benches in this course to rest after a hike up some of the steeper trails. Which is great if you are used to lower altitudes or you are not in the greatest of shape? Outhouses are available in a couple of different areas and are kept pretty clean. The very tall pines throughout the park not only provide a player challenges, but also provide a nice break from the heat of the day. On your way in from the parking lot to the first tee off there are stretching stations. Plenty of time to stop and stretch out, if you had a long drive up to this highly recommended beautiful course. There is a first bench at the end of your walk to the first tee off to rest up before you get started.

Cons:

It is quite a walk up to the first tee off.

Other Thoughts:

If you are an intermediate or advanced player, I would highly recommend this course. It would be well worth your trip, to this beautiful place.

Awesome Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Awesome wooded course. Kind of place you would go just to hike. Entire course is technical shots and pretty well maintained.

This entire course is through the woods but almost all of the holes you have a clear throwing lane.

Restrooms available about half way through. there's some tough uphill shots and some fun downhill shots.

Cons:

Only thing keeping me from giving this course a 5 is the that there is a 1/4 to 1/2 mile hike to get to the first tee, and depending on the time there may be a wait or parking can be difficult. Hike to first hole is not too bad except the first 3 holes are straight up the side of the mountain. (don't let this stop you from playing the course cause its awesome)

Other Thoughts:

Ranks right up there with the best courses around and its not too far from denver. (30min depending on area) This is going to be a signature course in Colorado and is a must play course.

There are benches you can chill after some of the tougher up hill hikes which seem to be in just the right spots.

Mountain Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The beautiful mountain setting made this course worth the drive from Colorado Springs. The holes are well marked making it easy for a first timer to the course to locate the tee boxes and pins. Tee boxes are wide and well maintained with seating to rest up after climbing the hills. That being said.....

Cons:

Extremely mountanous! although I found the hilly terrain fun and challenging, somone from lower elevations or not in shape might want to allow plenty of time to cover this one. Also, trees lining the fairways made for tight, sometimes frusterating, tee shots.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, a must for all Colorado disc golfers, or the bravest flatlanders, looking for a great day in the Rockies!

Great hike ... disc golf an excellent bonus 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Where to begin? Fantastic use of elevation change. Mix of open and wooded, long and short, left and right. Multiple pin placements. Incredible new signs with pole-hole-shaped bag hooks and beautiful log benches. Lots of opportunities for memorable shots. Paths lined with tree limbs to guide you to the next tee. And, of course, gorgeous scenery. Everyone I ran into was very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

Long hike to / from parking lot. No concrete tees (yes, I know this would be difficult, but I can't give a course five stars without them).

Other Thoughts:

Those like me who live at an elevation of less than 1000' and are not necessarily in great shape will wish they had oxygen tanks, but the course is definitely worth the pain. The first few holes take you straight up the hill, with #1 having a large set of stairs directly in front of the tee. The middle dozen or so holes are generally played on the "flat" (in relative terms) and more open top of the hill, although a couple of them (especially #11) drop you back down into a valley and require a hike back up. Take some photos between the 9th and 16th fairways, and get ready for the memorable drive down into (or across) the valley on #17. The last three holes bring you back down to the bottom. I couldn't see that the basket on #20 was in the middle placement, so what I thought was an unlucky break hitting a tree branch saved me quite a throw and hike back up the hill. All in all, one of the best courses I've ever played. Well worth the drive and hike.
