Well Maintained, Fun Course, Friendly Atmosphere

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Mountain scenery.
-Clear navigation with ample signage.
-Plenty of challenge if you play the long tees.
-Good for all skill levels because you have 3 baskets per hole, and you're not likely to lose a disc even if you shank it.
-The rough is thinned out, which helps with finding discs and reducing bugs. I brought bug spray and didn't even need it.

Cons:

-It's a hike (if that's a downside for you).
-It costs money.
-Throwing uphill will make you feel like a noodle arm when it cuts your distance in half.

Other Thoughts:

Everyone here was very friendly when I went to play the 41 holes on this property. Never seen so many people happy to be outside enjoying the mountain air.

Mountain Epicness 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beaver Ranch is an area of the mountains chock full of amazing disc golf. Several beautiful courses, stunning landscape, and each of them with a unique characters. What makes Beaver Ranch stand out and give it that extra edge to go up to the top echelon of courses isn't just the crazy good hole design.

Every hole on the whole course is unique and designed well. Every once in a while I would think the fairway was a little crowded, only to walk up and see it opened up and I just needed to trust the gap. It was fair, you just couldn't see it.But this course has it all: tight and technical, long epic shots downhill, steep uphill, technical downhill. And all fun and exciting!

The equipment here is top notch. Full, often generously huge, concrete tees on each hole (two on 15). Fully detailed tee signs with real pictures of what the hole looks like from the tee with each basket position marked. Each hole has at least two, up to four different possible positions, and at least two of those positions will have a basket in them. There's a set of... Mach V's I think, and a set of DisCatchers out there. One on each hole. The pictures on the tee were amazing and the most helpful aspect of anything I've seen on a course anywhere.

Navigation is pretty easy, but there are a couple spots where it's easy to get onto the wrong hole and you need to keep going, but really it's pretty easy.

This course is also one of the most beautiful places I have ever played. It is hard to really describe the effect of how well all the little things Beaver Ranch does to combine to being a fantastic course. Even the fact that each pin position is properly inputted into DGCR App, there may have been a couple missing but wow it's such a relief to see.

Cons:

I dunno. There were maybe a couple times I was like, "wow I like this." and not "WOW I LOVE THIS."

Previous reviewers have mentioned things like not every tee pad is perfect, the long round can be strenuous and you'll need water, and they're all right. I'll echo them with the same spirit of "well I need to put something here, even if it's small."

Other Thoughts:

There's a putting course on the property as well. I didn't play, but it looked fun and exciting!

Green's fee is $12, which isn't bad at all. The pro store has cool stickers, and a modest selection of discs.

I don't know dude, just go play this course!

EDIT: I just came back the morning after writing this review late last night and looked at the pics and saw the baskets I thought were Mach 5 in the review were Gateway Titans. I knew playing and had just forgotten

I also see that the hole numbers in the pics do not match the current configuration of holes. The pics are very out of date (and even have dirt tee pads), but when you get there you shouldn't have a problem navigating, or any big complaints about the new layout.

Pros:

Very beautiful course in the mountains. Two baskets per hole. Very good signs with basket locations pointed out on actual pictures of the view ahead of you.

Cons:

Lots of hiking around (we came from the coast so the elevation change and the hiking kicked our butt). A couple of pads took some time to find

Scenic and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- exceptionally friendly staff at the on-site trailer pro shop
- some scenic and spectacular holes
- well-maintained course

Cons:

- $12 to play was a bit steep, but at least it obviously went back into the course
- some of the holes were quite confusing for a first-timer, even with a map
- a few holes were either boring or insanely difficult

Other Thoughts:

Superb course. In the top 5, and maybe top 3 of the 70+ courses I've played.

Had the right balance of challenge and fun. And the spectacular scenic setting really upped the experience.

Friendly locals at the on-site trailer pro shop.

Course was clean and maintained. Care was put into the course layout.

A must-play if in the area. I attempted to check out the other highly-reviewed courses nearby, but one was by-appointment and the other took a steep muddy road to access. This one was very easy to get to from the main roads.

As a pass-through traveler, this made Beaver Ranch ideal for me.

Concrete Tee Pads
Brooms at every Tee Pad
Water
Pro Shop
41 Baskets!
Trash Cans on course
Recycle on course
Restrooms on course
Dog Friendly
Friendly Staff
Dog hooks on tee pads

Cons:

The $12 day pass is odd for a disc golf course, but once you play, you get it! Well worth the price! I hope Disc Golf is moving in this direction.

Other Thoughts:

This is truly an incredible course! Never have I seen a mountain course of this quality! You can tell the people running this place do everything they can to make this course great! Very friendly and knowledgable staff. These guys move baskets weekly, mow, weed whack, NO litter on course, fairways are all clear, maintain rollaway barriers all in the mountains at roughly 8,400ft! Hats off to you guys!

Pros:

Concrete tee pads for every hole with brooms on every tee sign and they are cleared in the winter
The pro shop and the warm-up area is awesome with 20 putting holes and baskets that can be used for practice putting
Great use of elevation and awesome pin positions especially in the long placements
Friendly staff that are welcoming and helpful before the round
Fantastic tee signs with elevation, hole distance, and easy to tell where you are supposed to go
The $12 fee keeps the course much less crowded than before and with the season pass option is an investment I am more than happy to make

Cons:

None really, the $12 is not too much and playing here is well worth it

Other Thoughts:

The course was filled with stunning views and was a great hike. At about 8000 feet elevation it may get tiring for people not used to elevation but there are benches at every tee box allowing to catch your breath.

Pros:

Everything is amazing here. From the baskets to the navigation. The views are incredible, this is a must play. The clubhouse is very nice with scorecards, and lots of disc to choose from. This immediately went into my top 10 courses ever played and the holes are spectacular. I think it's hole 8 you throw back across the valley if you look straight up the mountain there's a pin at the top when I played it. It's incredible. The tee signs state where pin is located at and if in Colorado do not skip this course

Cons:

Umm I can't really think of many, a lot of pins on hillsides so rollouts can occur. I had probably a 250 rollout so that can be frustrating but the course does play on a mountain so you can expect that

Other Thoughts:

This place is wonderful they have a zip line that runs through the course along with a 20 hole put course to warm up on

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Incredible course with tons of elevation change and many varying challenges. No water, and with few exceptions it is very hard to lose a disc on this course.

Cons:

Costs $12. Definitely worth the price, but as a thrifty golfer, I recommend reserving time to throw at least 2 rounds to get your money's worth. Had difficulty navigating holes 13-16, finding tee boxes and baskets for that batch of holes, probably user error.

Other Thoughts:

The ziplines look like a lot of fun, and I wish I had reserved time to go for rides on those too. Take ample water, as you're away from the clubhouse and parking lot the entire round.

Worth it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Absolutely stunning course with views to match. The holes are well laid out and easy to understand, with excellent tee pads and signage. Most of the course is plotted through dense woods with moderate to severe elevation change. There are occasional open, bomber holes, and plenty of deceiving ravines and gorges to make for a universally challenging course. Multiple pins on various holes allow for more accommodating throws to less experienced players. Fun, little putting course on the grounds as well! Lots of parking, friendly staff, and a sweet clubhouse tent make this top-tier disc golf; worth every penny.

Cons:

Virtually none, unless you're not a big fan of hiking or you're not into pay-to-play.

Other Thoughts:

Dogs must remain on a leash; plenty of leash hooks at tee pads and trash/recycling cans at strategic points. Smokers will also note the sign at the tee pad on #1 regarding the recommended procedures/locations.

Pros:

-Gorgeous course with many picturesque vistas.
-Concrete tee pads with all the amenities (bag holder, tee pad broom, dog leash hook, benches)
-Tee signs are very easy to read and to find all of the basket locations.
- 3 changing basket locations on almost every hole.
-Easy to navigate (signs pointing you towards the next tee)
-Very challenging (easy to slide or roll down a majority of the course, lots of trees everywhere and plenty of elevation change)
-Quality baskets unlike any I've seen before (check out some of the pictures)
-Nice pro shop with very friendly people

Cons:

-A few holes seemed like you threw down a hill only to have to go right back up.
-It was quite the hike (probably the hardest course to traverse that I have played, but to be expected from the location.
-Unforgiving slopes (as challenging as it was, sliding down a hill 200 ft the wrong way was heartbreaking)
-Off the beaten path (we ubered out to the course while we were visiting, only to find out we couldn't get an uber to leave. Luckily, the course owner was there and offered us a ride to the nearest town. Saved us!)

Other Thoughts:

This course is in the upper echelon of courses out there. Everything about it was epic, and it made you work for your score. You need to be prepared for a hike and a half, but it's definitely worth it for the experience. Fantastic course!

Course direction is great. Signs for each hole and pin placement indicators. Arrows directing to next basket. All top notch. Clearly some investment into this course.

Cons:

Must Play!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great shot variety throughout 23 holes. You will need every shot in your bag. Plenty of tight holes and open fairways, and everything in between.

The scenery is stunning: you will rarely see anything manmade other than a zipline course and a couple houses nestled high in the alpine mountains.

Very friendly staff with a decent pro shop. I've had good luck having my plastic returned to the shop as well. There is much room for error on some of these VERY steep and slanted fairways!!

Multiple pin placement make for tons of variety throughout the course. You will never play the same course twice!!

The hike is great by itself, disc golf just improves the experience!! I took my woman out there the last time I had the pleasure of being in the Denver area and she absolutely loved it.

They have built and extended a sister course that primarily serves as a putter/midrange experience. It's a great way to prepare yourself for 23 holes of intense hiking!

Cons:

This course is located on the east side of the Rocky Mountain range. It rains on and off almost constantly, which may increase the chance of slipping while traversing the terrain.

The price to play the course is constantly rising, but it's worth it!

Not much to add here.... This course leaves you wanting to come back again and again.

Other Thoughts:

I first played this course in 2012, during which they were making changes and adding holes to both courses.

What they've done with the course since the first time I played is remarkable. They continue to impress every month or year I get to make it out, as I am from the KC area. Throughout the 93 courses in 13 states that I've had the pleasure of playing, this one takes the cake! If you are in the area, make the drive. You will NOT be disappointed.

If you have the time, make a day out of it and head down CO 285 and check out Bailey DGC for a similar, albeit less maintained, experience.

Pros:

I drove from Denver to Conifer. The road was beautiful! Amazing mountain views and Red Rocks Amphitheater is along the way which is another destination I have always wanted to visit.

$10 to play. The lady in the stand was super nice and makes some GREAT trail mix. Plus she invites you to "eat with us later!".

I met up with some locals who let me tag along with them. Very important cause the course is very long and I had no idea where to go most of the time.

Every Tee pad has brooms, dog hooks and clear signs of where you are shooting.

Cons:

Not enough trash cans.

Altitude sickness can sink in if you aren't used to it. Take in the views and hydrate!

Stable drivers are useless here.

Other Thoughts:

Very clean course! The Bloom tournament was the day before and I didn't see any trash or graffiti on the course.

Only a 45 minute drive from Downtown Denver and it's a scenic drive.

World Class 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent views and environment in the mountains of Colorado.

Wide variety of shots from fairly open fairways, to steep uphills and downhills, to tightly wooded and technical shots.

Some truly memorable holes, including the famous bomb run on hole #17.

As with other mountain courses, it is difficult to lose a disc on most holes due to the lack of ground vegetation.

23 great holes.

Some of the best tees, markers and signage in Colorado.

During the summer and fall there is plenty of shade, and the elevation will make for a much cooler day than one spent in the city. The fall is especially nice; the convergence of comfortable weather and the changing colors of the aspen leaves make it one of the best times to visit the mountains.

The pro shop has every disc I want. KC Pro Glow Flat-Top Rocs. Star Teebirds and Valkyries. Judges. Wizards. These guys have great taste and you will see some excellent and possibly hard to find discs here. They are also very friendly and passionate about disc golf.

If you are looking for a longer course with a moderate hike involved, this is a great option. The middle few holes are pretty much straight uphill. You will get some decent exercise at this course.

The course is not hard to find or access and is only a short drive from Denver. There are a lot of excellent courses in the mountains, but some of them are much harder to get to.

Cons:

At points you will be quite a hike away from any type of amenities like restrooms. If you're a male this isn't such a big deal but I can see being female and having to pee around the last half of the course being a pain. Make sure you are prepared with plenty if water.

Sometimes the course can be pretty crowded. It is very well known and popular. During the last time I played there, there was a traffic jam of about 7 groups by the time we got to the final hole. This problem is compounded by people who are unprepared for the physical nature of the course or people who play in large groups, especially with a bunch of children. Fortunately this isn't a problem as long as you have time to wait, because you still get to sit on the benches and just hang out in a beautiful area.

Due to the fact that the course is built all over a large hill, there is an EXCELLENT chance of being hit by stray noob hyzers. We were playing on one hole that cut across the slope, with the next hole directly above it playing in the opposite direction. Someone in the group ahead of us made a throw that faded hard to the left and sailed directly downhill and into my shin. Be very mindful of who is ahead and downhill of you.

Due to the physically demanding nature and difficulty of the course, it may not be the best course for families or brand new players. It does not instill confidence in new players to hit tree after tree all day. That being said, it is a great place to improve for anyone willing to stick with it.

Other Thoughts:

Simply put, this is one of the best courses in Colorado. If you have only one opportunity to play a Colorado course you should give this one very serious consideration. It is representative of everything that mountain courses have to offer. Just make sure you are prepared with some good shoes, plenty of water and other refreshments, and all the tricks in your bag.
