Two rotten brothers named Fert and Bernie 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The front nine and back nine are very different from each other. Starters will receive a good foundation of what disc golf is like. Good mix of fairways, and the open holes are good practice for throwing what you typically don't throw and want to improve on.

-Hole nine might be fun for beginners. 175' ace run around the power tower. Hole seven is a pretty good challenging par three. It's just over 400' and is gently tucked in the woods. Hole 13 was unique too. 450' with a very low ceiling the entire way, but down a fair fairway.

-Few other solid holes, and some of the baskets perched on hills are nicely placed.

-And..... that's really it.

Cons:

-Oh dear. I don't know where to start here. Fert, the front nine, is pretty repetitive and boring. To add to that, it's completely flat. Bernie, the back nine is wooded and has a few absurd fairways (11, 14, and 18). I think what is even worse is the fact that the big downhill hole no longer exists. I think it was the old 16. I didn't know that until I got there. I got done with what's now #16 and looked for the elevated tee pad and it isn't there. I found a basket for #17 and saw that aside from the cool basket placement tucked into the woods and perched on the hill, it's relatively disappointing hole along the road.

-Hole 11 is a mainstream signature Schwarz hole on a mainstream Schwarz course. Throw around the telephone pole that's literally in your face, but don't hit it! The fairway cuts hard left. There are many branches to the left side of the hole that eliminate the idea to throw a slower hyzer. Your best bet is to throw a real wide ring round the rosie type hyzer right of the pole and right round the corner far left. Don't you ever get sick of doing that Russ?

-I really don't understand Russell's rationale regarding par. Hole seven is a 415' par three (as it should be I think) that is tucked in the woods. Hole eight is a 379' par four that is completely wide open. There's an OB road but that's it. Dead straight, very easy three. Both of them are clearly par threes from my point of view, but if one of them has to be a par four, it has to be seven. It's a harder hole to get a two on than it is on hole eight.

-Starts off just like Frank Liske. Holes one and two are painfully bland and boring. Hole one has NO obstacle at all. Hole two is slightly harder but still very bland. Then you get to hole three. Hole three here at Bell and Howard is better than three at Frank Liske but same objective. Throw a skip shot into the woods and say your prayers.

-Locals in Statesville may not have this issue, but first timers that don't live in Statesville probably will get confused. I did. The first hole I found was #10. I played the back nine first and had to use my navigation just to get to the front nine after I played hole 18. The address given on this site will take you to hole one. The Bell and Howard Chevrolet address will take you to #10. If you start on the front, just go out where you came in. Then take a left and then take another left. You'll see some baskets in the woods.

-Some holes are missing tee signs. There are markers on every hole, so it's not a big issue.

Other Thoughts:

-Bell and Howard had two sons. Firstborn, Fert (the front nine) and then Bernie (the back nine).

-The front nine (Fert) is painfully boring and has a goofy wooded hole. The back nine (Bernie) isn't fun either, aside from a couple of solid wooded holes. The rest are pretty lackluster and aggravating.

-They could've been doctors, or lawyers, CPAs, engineers, famous opera singers, circus people, Batman (not really), Queen Elsa (more likely), next president and VP, maybe a better disc golf course between the two of them. But instead they are two bickering brothers and their relationship is so strained that Bernie had to move out.

-Instead, Fert lays around on the couch. Won't get off the couch. Won't find a job. Won't go to school online, despite him being intellectual. Sleeps until 1 PM. Drags out of bed and plays Halo all day. He won't talk to anyone in person. He only talks to people online on the xbox, or his beloved pet pigeon. He's very lazy, boring, easily annoyed, and you halo fans better pray you don't come across him while you play halo on the xbox live. If you make the team lose, Fert is going to track down your address and he'll be on the hunt for you. He'll get up if he really wants to.

-Bernie is extremely annoying. Won't get out of the house either. He has good potential while he understandably has a chip on his shoulder. I mean, I've heard of that big downhill hole that used to be here and now it's gone. Bernie lost that special part of him. But instead of trying to get some part of him back, he instead trolls people on facebook all day. You have something serious to post? You better adjust your privacy settings, or simply block him. The only potential he utilizes is his ability to piss people off. That's his outlet. The flow is two small loops and then play 15-18. The walk back to the lot is pretty long, leaving you trolled without any last words.

-There's really nothing to see here. I guess it's more of a casual quick round practice course, but there's nothing that's all fun about it. All you'll see is unfavorable repetition between two niners. Boring holes and mourning holes. Go play Stumpy or contact the owner of Wooded Palms, also in Statesville. If you want to play here once, then do it to get it over with.

Pros:

Wide open, short front nine played first round ever in about thirty mins.(two people) good array of shots with plenty of forgiveness on missed shots.

Cons:

Better have a local in your group on the back nine. Can't find it and when you do can't figure out which way to go. Signs need updating don't know what hole your on half the time. No o.b. markings, no directional signs and poor distance measures on whole course(didn't know I could throw a putter 250)

Other Thoughts:

Good luck to newcomers try to talk to some locals for help,

Two… two… two courses in one 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

*Tee signs- the signs stand out to me as the best feature of the course. They're excellent metal signs with hole maps and sponsor names.
*Fairway shape- well balanced with lots of variety (7 St/ 5 Lt/ 3 R/ 2 S shape/ 1 L bend)
*Some elevation changes- on the back 9.
*Length variety is decent, even if the majority are in the 200-400 ft range. (1 of 175/ 7 of 200-299/ 7 of 300-399/ 3 of 400-450)
*Tees- very good raked concrete
*Easily accessible- the course is only a few minutes from I-40

Cons:

-You have to get back in your car to drive to the back nine. That's a pain.
-No elevation changes on the flat front 9.
-Some navigation issues on the back 9. Tee 11 is very hard to find, and you can't see 6 baskets from the tee (10 especially hard, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18)
-Hole 13 was very frustrating to me with a strange fairway shape and too much uncleared foliage.
- Almost no amenities. Needs a course map and score card. No bathroom, no warm up basket, and no message board, benches, or trash cans.

Other Thoughts:

Course Level: White (most suited for Intermediate players rated 900.) The back 9 is more challenging than the front.

The most striking characteristic of this course is that it's really two separate 9 hole courses. Most of the good features are on the back 9 and most of the areas needing improvement are on the front 9. Front 9- mostly flat, open grass holes. Back 9- some hills, and foliage, but it still feels kind of scruffy. The back 9 greens are better too because they aren't as wide open as the front.

I don't foresee playing this course again, but if I'm driving by on I-40 and can't resist the urge, then I'll just play the back 9.

good ol' statesville 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

well i live right down the road, and this was my first course to play on several years ago, the front nine is great for beginners because its very open through hole 3 then it gets pretty tough, concrete pads are new, maps on the holes are easy to follow(on the front 9)

Cons:

the rough(OB) and fairways are horribly taken care of, its like throwing your disc into a briar patch over and over, back 9 is challenging, but a pain in the *** to walk through due to the low, low ,low maintnance, hole 16 is almost a dangerous slope to have to get to the fairway at the bottom(due to almost no walkway), please be careful

i'm not positive on the hole, i believe it to be 13, has a basket missing, most likely a theft. but has been missing for months.

Terrible 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

great signage (for holes)
good mix of open and wooded

Cons:

No signage to direct you to next hole
Terrible condition of course, especially back nine, overgrowth everywhere
Very little risk reward
missing a basket on back nine
too hard to get from front to back 9
not much use of elevation change

Other Thoughts:

The only reason this even got a 1.5 is because of the signage and condition of front 9. My wife and I played this on our vacation and were extremely disapointed. To have such a nice park and facility and let it go the way they have. I think the whole course needs to be redesigned and maintained better. Would not recomend to anyone.

C = As average as the come 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- B+
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- C
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- C
5) Multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- NA

Other Thoughts:

I ranked this course subjectively based on my own personal enjoyment factor...more accurately my "personal addiction factor". Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they chose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I say adds anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me. See my profile for my rating philosophy.
