Two 9-holes courses a short drive away from each other drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a beginner-friendly course with lots of clean lines on the front-9 and many large concrete teepads. Many of the front-nine holes are wide open and provide a great opportunity to try whatever types of shots you'd like.

There was only one other person on the front nine, and nobody on the back nine on a surprisingly warm late Thursday afternoon in December.

Hole 18 is a surprising elevated basket location, and throughout the course (particularly 9 and 10) weaving through the electrical poles was a fun challenge for my wife and I, who are both beginner-to-low-intermediate-level.

Risk of disc loss is virtually none, as the park is well upkept, and the bramble-filled undergrowth is limited to spots on the back nine.

Cons:

Existing signage is old and in places no longer existent. There are no "Next tee" arrows. We had to rely on UDisc GPS to find several teepads, as the paths aren't intuitive, especially on the back nine. Basket bands could use a fresh coat of paint for visibility as well.

On hole 4 it's very easy to throw at the basket for 6, not realizing that you're aiming at the wrong basket until you overshoot the correct one.

Three of the teepads are drawn with spraypaint on existing asphalt roads and paths, and some of that paint is starting to fade. Be on the lookout for trucks there, and for cyclists using the mountain bike trail on the back nine.

I'm not sure what kind of disposal plant is located down Disposal Plant Rd, but Hole 17 is very close to something that smelled of sewage, so play that one quickly.

Other Thoughts:

The biggest complaint that people have about this course is that it's boring and simple. That might be the case if you're a solid golfer dropping 400-foot bombs, but for two people who aren't that good, we had a great time.

The other big complaint is that you need to hop in a car to get from from the front-nine to the back-nine. This one is a completely justified complaint, and although it's just two left turns, it could be enough of an inconvenience to turn off people who had a bad time on the front or people who just don't know that they need to hop in a car to finish 18 holes. At the very least, it would be nice to have a sign near the basket at 9 giving you directions on how to drive to 10.

In the end we had a nice time, and will probably play here again when we return to Statesville... We have scores to beat now after all.

Pros:

Easy to follow course
Good mix of wooded and open
Course is great if you're looking to get in a quick 9 (back or front)
The back 9 just got an upgrade (old 16, 17, and 18 are different now. You don't have to play by the sewer).

Cons:

Front and Back 9s are split, you have to drive to get between each course.
If it rains, the course will be soupy. There's a big puddle right next to hole 6 basket (if it rains).

Other Thoughts:

They just changed several holes on the back 9.
The course is nice to play, but having to get back in the car and drive back up the block to the back 9 is a little annoying (I'm a stay at home dad, so I push a stroller when I usually play).
Course par is marked as a 60 at the course, but it's more like a 58.
The back 9 upgrade isn't finished yet. There are still signs that need to be re-made, but the upgrade has turned the course from a 2.5 to a good 3.0

2 courses in one! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a tale of two extremes. The front 9 plays through a park with mostly flat, open shots. Large concrete tee pads offer excellent footing. Nice park setting with mown grass fairways. The color tee signs are very descriptive. The problem is that you have to get back in your car & drive to the back 9. There is no way across the creek to get to the back 9. It's not too bad. Just a little strange. The back 9 has more trees in play & there is some elevation in play here. Sandy dirt & grass mix as you play through & around a creek bed.The tee pads are 'natural' & range from grass to sandy dirt. There are short & long throws. Open to wooded & vise-versa. I love hole #9 where you shoot through the base of the electric tower. #16 was a great shot too! There is some elevation on the back 9. Some water hazards (creek & water puddles).

Cons:

No benches. Some of the tee pads on back 9 were loose sandy dirt & hard to get good footing. The front 9 layout is somewhat boring. I liked the back 9 better.

Other Thoughts:

We threw at a couple courses in the area & this was a pretty fun course to play. I'm glad I checked it out! Not too crowded. They def need a bridge from the front 9 to the back so you dont have to drive. But the area looks like it is prone to flooding so the bridge would have to be pretty substantial. This will cost $$.

Pros:

This will be a very good course, with the growth and up keep continues. There are many holes that are challenging, with hard left an right turns and lots of overgrowth. The back 9 has some tough basket placement but with some well placed thumbers and overhands you can get there. There is a good mix of open, closed tunel, and open sky over and around tree holes.

Cons:

Some of the growth needs to be trimed yet. There needs to be additional arrow signs to let you know where the next hole is and areas you want to throw to to be able to dog leg into the woods. It has the feel of 2 different courses and a bridge needs to be made so you don't have to drive around to the back 9.

Other Thoughts:

This course uses much of the utilities right of way so I would be concerned on how offten it will get cut. There is supose to be a way you can play the course without driving. Play 1-5 after 5 cross the creek on the pipe and play 16-18 then 10-15; cross back over the pipe and play 6-9. I did not know this till I was on 10 and meet some regs. I was told that on Sundays ther is an mixed doubles. It can be VERY good with a little more work.
