Kudos for the Recent Layout Overhaul 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 9, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This community park course just received a major layout overhaul as of early April and the map from 2016 no longer applies. The old #12-18 after the underpass has been eradicated and it's been revamped into a smaller, tighter, and overall better layout. The front nine slightly changed too.

Everything's shorter. It's now a decent beginner level course with less walking, it's heavily open with a dash of forest holes and elevation plays a role. #5 downhill starting in forest going into open was my favorite.

The front nine and back nine can be played independently and both loop back close to their starting points near the front parking lot. There were several player groups when I was there on a Monday around 1 thru 3pm. Seems like it could become busy.

Field practice options are limited but looks possible on the triangular section of field, across the parking lot, between 9 and 10. Other areas can be used but are fairways.

The rating of 2 stars is for a "reasonable" course, about a star more than the previous course deserved. The underpass portion will not be missed. The area is lacking fast niners for quick practice rounds so this change is a big plus. It's still going through some growing pains however. Hopefully, with the major cons gone, the fewer remaining downsides will be ironed out over time.

+Yellow banded DiscCatcher baskets.

Cons:

Navigation isn't easy at the moment. The only current course map is on a paid DG mobile app. There is no map on site and the baskets still have the old numbers affixed, sometimes alongside the new. Tee signs on the front nine are now misnumbered. #10-11 were missing tee signs altogether. Yellow painted tee signs are current. It's said the rest are coming and when it does, it should be rated a bit higher.

Tee pads are dirt and a piece of lumber. No big deal at these distances unless the course becomes very popular.

The layout heavily favors RHBH/LHFH. There are hardly any right curves here to balance play out for LHBH/RHFHers. Baskets are mostly straight ahead or on the left. #15 is the only major exception. There's some repetition throughout, for example #2/#3/#5, #7/#8, #13/#17 felt just like extremely minor variations on a theme. The basic layout now is fine as is, but moving some baskets around just a bit from their current positions might help both issues here tremendously.

#9 goes over a cornfield with the basket is feet within a batting cage? Vegetation is dead now, but I wonder how this is going to work later in the summer when players inevitably lose sight of their discs within rows of corn stalks? That hole might have to be redone.

#10 basket has a fast moving stream in front of it. A good hole, just be aware of the water hazard that can carry away discs when it's really flowing.

#18 is a downhill that's hard to see past the tee, with previous fairways close on the left. It's possible someone playing 10 or 11 might get dinged with an errant hyzer slipping from someone's grip early. Danger.

One of the previous downpoints plaguing this course was narrow fairways with tall grass on the sides. With much less course to mow, guess I have to wait until the summer to see if that aspect improves.

Other Thoughts:

Starting Point: Park in the first parking lot on left, first tee is in the east north east corner at 40.537459, -75.519672 (google maps).

Amenities: In same parking lot is a building with a big "CAMP" "OLYMPIC" signs on it. It houses bathrooms, nice ones too. No water fountains.

Layout: The front eight are holes going around the outside perimeter of forest, situated on a steeply inclined hill, in a loop. The first six are on the base, with several holes going across the open field towards baskets perched near the stream and then back again to baskets in the forest's edge. There is one short uphill in the forest. #6 is the final return from stream, it goes uphill to an open basket. #7 and #8 are on the backside, top of the hill, fairly straight shots but discs going too far left can roll down quickly. #9 is a walk down the road and starts near the curve before the cornfield.

#10 tee is on the same road and throws into the basket down and across the stream. #11 is straight uphill.

New #12-17 is another around the perimeter of the forest loop where the old #8/9/10 used to be. #12-14 using the field by the stream as fairway, #13 basket in forest. After 14, go left. #15 is an uphill into the forest with basket right. Go right. #16 is another short forest shot. Climb to outside the forest. #17's tee is back towards the road, basket in a forest nook. #18 is by the BMX bike pit and downhill, basket by road before stream.

There's a single leftover basket, the old #11 starting next to back parking lot and going toward white concrete underpass bridge. Just for fun while it lasts.

It could be so much more 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very cool Signs.
Unique course design

Cons:

Terribly laid out.
Poorly maintained.
Nearly impossible to complete.

Other Thoughts:

This course is extremely complicated to review, mainly because of its design.

The first 6 holes are a breath of fresh air compared to most park courses. They have great design and flow very well together. Some tighter shots out of the tree line make for an interesting play though. All of this is lost on the rest of the course though..

From hole 7 and on you can say goodbye to that "flowing" design. You have to walk across the entire parking lot and a bridge to even find hole 7, from there..good luck. It is poorly maintained and requires long walks between basket - pads. I gave up after hole 13.

I would definitely recommend the front 6 holes, but until the rest is re-designed I am going to stay away personally.

Okay for its first iteration but in need of some tweaking (and brush clearing!) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 29, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Decent Shot variety (although it is honestly pretty righty biased) with regards to elevation and park usage.
DisCatcher baskets (with the addition of the very cool Blue Band practice basket)
What signage is there is pretty unique/cool
Park Quality, Camp olympic is a beautiful park overall.

Cons:

Extremely thick and unforgiving rough which often goes unchecked for quite some time.
Natural Tee pads (that are hard to see and stay muddy for a long time).
Poor Tee placement: there are a couple holes that put you in a shared position with other park traffic.
A totally overgrown section near the end of the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of things going for it and underneath it's flaws lies a solid foundation that is fun to play. There is a little bit of a repetitive nature as you zig zag your way along the first few holes but that story changes as you start to sink your teeth into this course. Some of the longer holes are downright excellent and challenging albeit fairly open. I think Camp O. has great potential but that doesn't save it in the here and now. A worthwhile play but keep your eye on the course conditions because when it grows in you might be better suited playing elsewhere.

Not up to par locally 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice wooden tee markers with basic maps of the holes (on the older holes)
Next Tee arrows hanging from many of the baskets

Cons:

Long walks between holes making for bad course flow
Safety issues
Boring and repetitive
Swampy
Some stupidly thorny rough
The LONG walk back to where you parked when you're done

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 plays from right next to a parking lot. It's a slight hyzer to a downhill basket. If you turn a long throw over, it could sail onto the basketball courts.

Keep walking straight past the basket across the field to find the second tee. Holes 2-5 play back and forth across the same little stretch of field. I hadn't downloaded the map yet and the only basket I could see from 2's tee was 5 so I threw from 2's tee to 5's basket. The basket is up on a grassy hillside so roll aways here are very possible.

Hole 6 plays across the top of the hill. It's a long sweeping annie or a flick. The left side of the fairway drops off the hill. There is a house on the hillside down in the trees up by the basket.

Then there's a really long walk down the hill along the road past where you parked to get to hole 7. The throw is only 214 feet but it looks longer, especially when the creek is running hard and dirty. If you don't choose to lay up, there are trees and brush on both sides of the creek, the openings to the basket are only about 30' wide. The basket is about 20' onto the opposite bank. The day I played, anything in the water was gone without a chance.

Hole 8 is the first par 4 and the first hole over 500'. It's a straight throw across a wide open field bordered by trees on the left and the creek on the right.

Hole 9 is a short throw up a steep hill in the woods. It looks like a lot of trees and brush were cleared to make this fairway.

Hole 10 is a bit of a walk to another short hole that throws along a strip of grass between the woods on the left and a corn field on the right before diving left into the woods right before the basket.

Hole 11 is a little hard to find even with the map. A bit farther from the previous basket than expected. This is the longest hole on the course, it plays downhill on a strip of grass between a corn field on the right and a playground on the left. I was glad I was here on a day that the playground was empty and the corn stalks were gone for the winter.

Holes 12-18 are on the other side of the turnpike. On this side of the course, the rough is super thick and thorny and the day I was there is was also a swamp. The fairways were a muddy soup bowl as well. On 12-14 I could easily see a griplocked high and right (rhbh) throw making it up to the turnpike.

Hole 12 plays along a thin grassy strip with woods and rough on the left, woods and turnpike on the right.

After a walk long enough to have been another hole, Hole 13 plays along the same patch of grass as hole 12. This time the woods on the left have been replaced with thorny underbrush.

Hole 14 continues skirting along the edge of the turnpike property but this time you're in the woods with no large open area to let the disc work. Between the swampy spots and the large fallen trees it was a little difficult to get to this basket.

15 plays parallel to 14 in the opposite direction with the creek running the entire right side of the fairway, as it also does on 16 and 17. These 3 fairways look like they are still being carved out of the woods. A lot of trees and brush have already been removed leaving tight fairways with an occasional tree left behind to hit. Some of the throwing windows are really small in both width and height. Ricochets here can easily find the creek and again, on the day I was here anything wet was gone forever with absolutely no chance.

Hole 18. The chance to throw under the turnpike. Sounds great! In reality it's a short, straight shot in the woods with the turnpike so far above you that it's a complete non-factor. I'm not saying I was hoping for something unsafe here, heck I'm not even a fan of 12-14 because of the chance of the disc flying up onto the highway, but this throw was a total letdown after hearing, "You get to throw under the turnpike!" from several very excited people. Even the creek that made the last 3 holes more interesting is essentially absent on 18.

Then you're done. And you're about half a mile from where you parked next to hole 1's tee.

Final Thoughts: Bad. This is just a bad course. The amount of walking between holes and especially after you're done is excessive. I can't think of another course like this that I've played other than Windlestrae where you do more walking between holes and after you're done than you do playing the holes themselves, and that course had 8 of it's baskets removed leaving not really a course anymore, this one is still being put in. It would probably be worth another half star in the rating if they could add another hole or two going from 18 back to where 7's tee is so you're reasonably close to where you parked and maybe put in another between 12 and 13 since they're not afraid of short and straight here. Make it so that most of the walking happens on the holes, not between them.
There wasn't really any variety to the throws here, everything was basically straight or straight with a fade. Except for 9 which was straight uphill and a bit of an annie. 1, 5 and 9 had the only elevation to speak of. The chance for disc loss is probably the highest here of any course I've ever played, maybe it's not as bad when the creek settles down? What happens when the corn is growing along side 10 and 11? I threw a really good drive on 11, decided to try a second and the extra power turned that disc out into the corn field. Who knows if I would have found it if the corn was high and what is the farmer going to think about disc golfers tromping around in the corn looking for discs? Also, the current map is a bit confusing as the satellite image is from before a lot of the work was done to the park. Hole 11 isn't really in the middle of a corn field as the picture seems to indicate. And I'm pretty sure there's more space between 14-15 and 15-16 than the lines on the map show. I don't know what this park is like in the summer when it's crowded, but a "Top of the World" shot from 6's tee out into the field where 5's tee box is, would add a ton of interest and a memorable hole to what is otherwise a pretty boring course.

Final Final Thought: With Jordan Creek only minutes away from this course and all the other great options in the area, I can't imagine ever coming here again. It's a shame because there is obviously a ton of work being done by local disc golfers building this course. I guess I just can't get on board with the design.

Camp Olympic gets a "Silver" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a variety of holes that include wide open fields, tightly wooded holes, and fair but challenging water hazards. It provides an opportunity for newer players to learn the game but also can prove problematic even for veteran players. There is a good mix of different hole lengths while avoiding 800+ behemoths. On holes 1-12, there are great and aesthetically pleasing signs that clearly show you the pin, hole location, hazards, and distance.

The course is basically split into three sections:

Holes 1-6: These holes vary in length but mostly crisscross through an open field. This makes it a great way to ease into your round. Hole 1 is a simple hole that skirts the woods while Hole 2 takes you across a field with two imposing trees to avoid. Hole 3 takes you back across the open area but that basket is located in wooded area. Hole 4 is a personal favorite as you throw from elevation out of the woods and across the field; a nice throw will soar but you have the danger of a missed shot. Hole 5 takes you up a steep hill while hole 6 varies it up with a challenging dogleg right where you need to avoid ending up going back down in a heavily forested area.

After hole 6 there is a long walk down to...

Holes 7-11: Hole 7 takes you across a creek which can provide for a simple deuce or a dip into the water. Hole 8 is a 500+ foot hole across a field (Not sure if there would be corn growing during the spring/summer, this whole would seem almost impossible if that was the case. Holes 9 and 10 are shorter; 9 takes you uphill while 10 requires a nice drive into a wooded green. At 630 feet, 11 is the longest hole on the course but is fairly wide open and downhill.

After 11 you walk under the turnpike and into the final stretch...

Holes 12-18: These courses significantly ramp up the difficulty level. A good drive on 12 will take you out of danger, but you can end up in the woods or the swamp. 13 isn't well-marked yet, but this longer hole requires a few good throws and then a nice curve back to the right into a wooded green. Holes 14-17 are all in the woods and are very difficult to navigate, especially 14 and 16. They are definitely fun but require some careful maneuvering (and luck). Lefties or right-handed flickers will struggle, as a river runs along the right (which swallowed up one of my friend's discs). Hole 18 is a short deuce opportunity to finish up.

Most memorable holes include 4 (throwing from the woods through a picturesque opening), 7 (across the creek), and 11 (really lets you rip it).

Cons:

The course isn't quite yet completed and lacks signs for holes 13-18. The natural tees get very muddy and create slipping during drives. There are some long walks between holes 6/7 and 11/12 but it helps that the scenery is pretty. Some of the holes in the back six don't really have a clear throwing lane and can come down to blind luck or excellent hammering skills. Hole 18 is a rather lame finish to an otherwise excellent course, it's pretty much a straight shot that allows for an easy deuce. After a challenging and varied course, it would have been better to end with a "capstone" hole.

Other Thoughts:

It takes a great course to enter into the rotation when one is playing the Lehigh Valley. If you are a local and a veteran of these courses, this is a great new place to try out. However, you would want to hit the more refined gems like Jordan, Nockamixon, and Lehigh Parkway before going to this newer course. I'm not sure if they are planning on installing rubber or concrete tees, but they hopefully will to help combat the mud (there was some slipping and sliding). There is also a playground being installed as I write this, I recommend riding on the mini-zipline to celebrate your round.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 13, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- The layout and general design of Camp Olympic was derived from a cache of etched Lenape jasper tablets found on site.

- The course plays underneath the overpass of I476, and as a result, there are always new "turnpike treasures" laying about in the vicinity. If you collect hubcaps and random pieces of metal, you'll love this part.

- The course truly utilizes the entire park property, which is vast. It is fair to say that the holes get progressively challenging throughout the course. This is a great dynamic, as it allows new players and families with young kids to comfortably play 1-6, yet still offer a heck of a lot of specific challenges later in the course.

- Great course variation. Just about every type of hole you can think of is represented at Camp Olympic. While water hazards are in play on almost half of the holes, discs are easily retrieved from the fairly shallow streams.

- Easy to navigate if you are capable of printing / reading the attached course map, i.e. you have an IQ greater than 80.

Cons:

- This is a "walking course", and there are several baskets where the walk to the next tee is ~100 yards. While this isn't an issue for the majority of golfers who are not whiny cowards, it is worthy of note.

- Natural tees are usually in good shape, but can be a bit muddy after a rain. Those who maintain the course are actively involved in gaining permanent tees.

Other Thoughts:

Great addition to the outstanding course resume of the Greater Lehigh Valley Area, enhancing our reputation as a disc golf destination.
