Camp Olympic gets a "Silver" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a variety of holes that include wide open fields, tightly wooded holes, and fair but challenging water hazards. It provides an opportunity for newer players to learn the game but also can prove problematic even for veteran players. There is a good mix of different hole lengths while avoiding 800+ behemoths. On holes 1-12, there are great and aesthetically pleasing signs that clearly show you the pin, hole location, hazards, and distance.

The course is basically split into three sections:

Holes 1-6: These holes vary in length but mostly crisscross through an open field. This makes it a great way to ease into your round. Hole 1 is a simple hole that skirts the woods while Hole 2 takes you across a field with two imposing trees to avoid. Hole 3 takes you back across the open area but that basket is located in wooded area. Hole 4 is a personal favorite as you throw from elevation out of the woods and across the field; a nice throw will soar but you have the danger of a missed shot. Hole 5 takes you up a steep hill while hole 6 varies it up with a challenging dogleg right where you need to avoid ending up going back down in a heavily forested area.

After hole 6 there is a long walk down to...

Holes 7-11: Hole 7 takes you across a creek which can provide for a simple deuce or a dip into the water. Hole 8 is a 500+ foot hole across a field (Not sure if there would be corn growing during the spring/summer, this whole would seem almost impossible if that was the case. Holes 9 and 10 are shorter; 9 takes you uphill while 10 requires a nice drive into a wooded green. At 630 feet, 11 is the longest hole on the course but is fairly wide open and downhill.

After 11 you walk under the turnpike and into the final stretch...

Holes 12-18: These courses significantly ramp up the difficulty level. A good drive on 12 will take you out of danger, but you can end up in the woods or the swamp. 13 isn't well-marked yet, but this longer hole requires a few good throws and then a nice curve back to the right into a wooded green. Holes 14-17 are all in the woods and are very difficult to navigate, especially 14 and 16. They are definitely fun but require some careful maneuvering (and luck). Lefties or right-handed flickers will struggle, as a river runs along the right (which swallowed up one of my friend's discs). Hole 18 is a short deuce opportunity to finish up.

Most memorable holes include 4 (throwing from the woods through a picturesque opening), 7 (across the creek), and 11 (really lets you rip it).

Cons:

The course isn't quite yet completed and lacks signs for holes 13-18. The natural tees get very muddy and create slipping during drives. There are some long walks between holes 6/7 and 11/12 but it helps that the scenery is pretty. Some of the holes in the back six don't really have a clear throwing lane and can come down to blind luck or excellent hammering skills. Hole 18 is a rather lame finish to an otherwise excellent course, it's pretty much a straight shot that allows for an easy deuce. After a challenging and varied course, it would have been better to end with a "capstone" hole.

Other Thoughts:

It takes a great course to enter into the rotation when one is playing the Lehigh Valley. If you are a local and a veteran of these courses, this is a great new place to try out. However, you would want to hit the more refined gems like Jordan, Nockamixon, and Lehigh Parkway before going to this newer course. I'm not sure if they are planning on installing rubber or concrete tees, but they hopefully will to help combat the mud (there was some slipping and sliding). There is also a playground being installed as I write this, I recommend riding on the mini-zipline to celebrate your round.
