Loved this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perfectly mowed course. No Dogs. No strollers. JUST DISC!!! Haven't been out to the Farm in few years. The old building was gone. New parking lot. Concrete pads( no ruts-AWESOME)

Cons:

It does get swampy. But I ususually waited until 4th Julyish to start playing. Dry Spring you can play earlier.

Other Thoughts:

Papier-mâche tree gone. STill have the tin shed and old windmill. Absolutley love this course. Ellison was my 1st but this is my fave after that silly redesign at Elllison.

So close to amazing.. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course starts off pretty standard but with some nice views and pretty features but soon changes in to man-made elevation changes (tee/ hole on a 6' mound) and plays pretty well. There are some short holes and a few insanely long ones. Good variety. You can tell that somebody has loved this course over the years, it's not a public park, it's a disc golf course, end of story. But it has qualities to it that are simply there to be pretty, an old wheel and a small grain silo come to mind. Also a few objects around make it really pretty some times like a short fence right in front of hole 12. This course has a LOT of things going right for it.

Cons:

This course needs some new Tee signs. It also needs a map at the front board and maybe some arrows to point the way from time to time. I also hear this course can get swampy and I saw the potential for it.

Most of this can be fixed or avoided, this is really a nice course.

Other Thoughts:

I haven't looked it up, but I'm pretty sure they made the front 9 one time and tacked the back 9 on much later, hole 10 is designed just to get you as far away from the front 9 as possible so you can play 11-18 back towards the parking lot. It makes the park a little less newbie friendly, but that's not exactly a problem.

I am going to try playing through the park starting at hole 9 and ending at hole 8, I think this will be a bit less fatiguing for my newbie arm, as the super long hole won't be towards the back of my game.

If you're nearby...you should play this course, and you should love this course, and you should want to take care of this course. With just a bit of support from all of us this course will be 4.5 star quality without much effort. As always *please* keep your parks clean.

P.S. I will be playing this park more in the future, but I want to see the other Rochester parks first.

Destination Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

"Immaculate" is the first word that comes to mind. Beautiful golf-course setting with manicured fairways and great scenery. Wood chip bunkers, a couple murky ponds, a stream, and some good old-fashioned woodsy rough can come into play if you're not careful. A variety of pine and deciduous trees also dot the landscape in strategic spots.

Course flow and the play of each hole are well thought out, rewarding good throws and punishing bad (although usually not too severely.)

A big arm will definitely help here, but smart upshots and good putting are probably more important. Most baskets are either elevated or guarded by trees and/or other hazards.

Freshly installed concrete pads are a nice bonus.

The locals must take a lot of pride in this course, as I saw no garbage cans yet hardly any litter. It was also nice to be in a setting almost entirely geared towards disc golf. No close traffic, no loud parties at park shelters nearby, no dog walkers or oblivious park zombies wandering around fairways.

Cons:

Ladies' tees are tough to find; my wife guessed where to throw from on a few holes.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth the trip. I would gladly pay to play at a course like Chili.

Very fun course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Concrete pads
- Mostly wide fairways
- Long course
- Never crowded, most cars I've seen is 10
- Well mowed and manicured
- Very challenging

Cons:

- Distance can be hard to overcome some holes
- Windy days = lost discs
- Flooding possible
- Easy to get lost

Other Thoughts:

This is the best park in Rochester. Period. It is extremely well maintained and just had concrete pads put in. It is an extremely challenging course for beginners like I was at the beginning of the season. My first time out there from the pro tees I finished +24 or something.

The famous Par 4 911ft. hole is not only famous for being long but if you throw a fade you can easily lose you disc in the untamed wilderness. Though, you get a great feeling of accomplishment getting a 5 or better on it.

Hole #18 is also very long at 728' from the pro's. So bring a big arm!

This summer has been very rainy, and the streams that run through several of the holes have overrun the path between holes several times, which means backtracking or foraging for wood to build a bridge.

I try to play here at least 1 time every weekend as it's my favorite course, and is night and day compared to others.

One of a kind 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A very unique links style course that highly resembles a real golf course with mowed fairways and tee boxes. Practice basket near parking lot. Three sets of tees on each hole. Great mix of distance from really short deuceable holes to a monster 911' hole. Along with some really unique obstacles/basket locations.

Cons:

Be prepared to play in the wind, even on a relatively calm day the wind will mess with your shots. Unmowed grass off the fairway gets pretty tall and will eat your disc if you don't keep a really good eye on it. A few swampy areas make disc retrieval not so fun.

Other Thoughts:

I call this the best course in the Rochester area due to its one of a kind feel. Bring your distance drivers and big arm, but don't forget your accuracy either.

beautiful and tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful sights, very neatly kept fairways help keep you from getting lost going from hole to hole. Some long tee's will give you the opportunity to work on your long drives. Very interesting obstacles that you wont see at other courses.

Cons:

Some holes seem a little to long for their low pars. Heavy vegetation will eat your disc's if you don't keep a close on on where your not so perfect shots land.

Other Thoughts:

Course is beautifully designed with Variety of shots required. Pars are relatively low for some of the distances, but i guess they may be doable on a professional level. A big arm is required on a few holes, example being hole 11. A 911foot par 4, with a thick field hugging the right side. Most hole's have heavy vegetation that will leave you wishing you had thrown your stray shot a little better, but i think this not necessarily a bad thing. I've notice a few holes have moved their pin location to even more difficult locations this year.

Mecca of Rochester Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is by far the best course in the Greater Rochester area. The land is solely there for disc golf. The course is huge, well groomed, and never too busy.

Some people complain that it's a course for big arms but anyone who can throw over 300 ft should love it.

Cons:

The hole that is 911ft long is only a par 4 when it should be a par 5 according to PDGA standards.

Other Thoughts:

(revised) My old other thoughts section was created when I was a noob and when Ellison had no teepads and I sort of bashed it so I am updating it finally. Now that I've got a few years under my belt and Ellison has teepads I can honestly say that these courese are both 4-5 stars. Althought Ellison isn't as pretty, secluded, or vacant as Chili it has MANY different shots layed out which keeps it fun to play no matter how many times you've played it.

Just like a golf course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Amazingly manacured fairways with roughs and everything.
- Moderate amount of trees, making for the necesity of a good drive, otherwise you're going to get stuck behind I pine (as I did many times).
- A lot of long holes which most courses tend to skip out on so they can fit more holes into a smaller area.

Cons:

- No concrete tee pads which make it hard for me to get a good release.
- The unmanacured parts of the course are very overgrown and could use some trimming.
- Very hard to navigate alone.

Other Thoughts:

Upon arrival I was a little sceptical because the parking lot was under construction, but after walking around the course a little bit I could tell that it was going to be a nice course. It is set up like a links style golf course and is one of the best courses I have played and I would recommend it to anyone in the Rochester, or even New York, area.

Baker my Baby!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you've got an arm then you'll love this course. I was blessed to live nearby for 5 years. The ideal time to play this course is in the spring or summer. When the tall grass is as tall as yourself, and the fairways are perfectly mowed. Very demanding fairways. This course may be wide open treewise but you definately dont want to find yourself off the fairways. This is a big arm course. accuracy will help but you need to be able to throw at least 300< to truly appreciate this course. It has 2 holes over 800 feet and a couple more over 600'. It is beautiful however, old farm fencings, an antique windmill, a small silo, and creeks on a few holes. Also it is usually fairly empty even in the busy seasons as there is no local club that exclusively takes care of it (but the township does).

Cons:

If your specialty is short and accurate not you cup-o-tea but an amazing course still. There is no local club that maintains it, but the township does an amazing job!!

Other Thoughts:

Many people think that Ellsion park is sooo much better. I lived here for seven years and i'll say. Bakers farm is every bit as good (better in my opinion, if you've got an arm), but the club for Ellison is much more active & greater!

A real course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Unique. Lots of interesting obstacles created out of a basically flat and treeless terrain. Trees are growing in many places and so it keeps getting better. This place is just a disc golf course and not a park also. Although it can be long and challenging enough for pros it's a fun place to bring beginners to see what this sport can be like.

Cons:

A little too open and long on the back 9. Some of the old signs are broken or missing. Although there are alternate tees, they can be hard to find since they're flush with the ground.

Other Thoughts:

The Town of Chili and committed to fixing this place up so hopefully it will return to it's greater glory.

Big Arm Required 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Huge layout. The fairways are large enough to allow you to air it out with everything you have on many holes without fearing your disc will never be seen again. Well manicured. Elevated tees and greens and some signature holes you won't see duplicated elsewhere. Holes 11 and 18 are marathons. A small creek comes into play on a couple holes which serves as a water hazard.

Cons:

Many if not most holes favor the biggest throwers. Too open on too many fairways. A lot of baskets are dead ahead from the tee. All you really need to be able to do is throw long and straight to do well. This gets repetative.

Other Thoughts:

Despite my cons this is a fun course that provides a unique challenge in terms of the vast length of some holes. Another solid course in the Rochester area. Beautiful course to walk and just enjoy being outside. I'd bring a golf cart if I owned one. I'm only giving this course a 3 because of the lack of different shots needed to succeed.

10 years later 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I first played Chili back in 1998. The course was decent back then, but you could tell it was going to be great in 10 - 20 years. Well it's been 10 years now since I last played and I was blown away at how nice this park had matured. All the trees that were planted have grown up nicely. The paper machee trees and artificial Christmas trees are now gone (YEAH!!!) The course looks better than ever. It was like being at a country club when I was there. Grass was an inch tall, beautifully mowed fairways with rough. It really looks better than I had hoped it would after all these years.

Cons:

The clubhouse is gone, but supposedly the city is putting in a bunch of money to build a new one. Tee signs have worn out over the years.

Other Thoughts:

It's a lot shorter than I remember, but it is still a booming arm course for the most part. I played the long tees and shot a 54. I will be back soon to play Chili again. It is back in my top 10 list.

Requires Powerful Accuracy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful landscape; requires a very large variety of shots to score well; extremely large variation in hole lengths; well placed obstacles that punish poor throws; a variety of ways to approach many of the holes; generally well manicured; the course shows pride in the sport; some tee shots will force creativity to allow for a reasonable angle of attack on the basket; word is there are generally course maps and score cards at the start, although they weren't there; many touches that don't go unnoticed; for those that go to Ellison often, you'll be very pleased with how busy this course is - it's funny how a 911 foot hole can deter a family taking their 6 kids out to play there :)

Cons:

Grass tee areas; tee areas that are sometimes hard to find; no true technical holes; a few quasi-dangerous tee areas (like the 7th); some very dense brush just off the fairways can make finding your disc a painful ordeal; you may shoot at the wrong basket without a map the first time you play

Other Thoughts:

Baker farm completely surprised me. Looking at the pictures, it looks way too wide open to be a course I would even start to consider excellent. The pictures simply don't do it justice - much of this due to the course's length. The obstacles are there. Yes, the course is relatively open at first glance, but if you let your drive go nose up off any given tee and it veers hyzer, you can safely bet it will end up in trouble. I made the comment to my friend by about the fifth hole - "It's like they designed this course on a computer! How did they create this layout?" You simply can't get a feel for these holes by looking at the pictures. I took a picture of one of the baskets, the 12th I believe, that may give a bit more of a feel for what this course is like than the shots from the tee. I'll put it up sooner than later.

If this course had concrete tees and better signage, I'd have to consider giving it a 4.5 - near perfection. I still may not be able to go that high, however, as the truly technical holes just aren't there. Am I asking for too much? I don't think so... I look at the word 'perfect' for a 5.0 and that's what I'm going off of. Baker Farm doesn't have every little thing required to be a 4.5 or a 5.0, but this course doesn't have any glaring flaws. This course is Excellent - 4.0. Can't for my next trip to Rochester so I can play it and Ellison again.

EDITS: timg has informed me that I did indeed miss the practice basket, so I've removed it from the cons. Word is there will be concrete tee pads installed within the next couple of years - when that happens I may come back and bump this to a 4.5 after playing again...

Pros:

Very scenic use of a former farm. Even a small silo next to one of the baskets. Room to throw, but few baskets out in the open.

Cons:

Thick woods & brush along the fairways. Too likely to lose a disc if you go astray.

Other Thoughts:

The only baskets with no obstructions or technical fairways are 700 to 900 feet long. The front nine plays pretty qucikly. The back nine is long. When we are short of time, we play the front nine two or three times.

Pros:

Very nice course with good variety, great setting. Challenges come from unmown rough, inverted bunkers, guarded baskets, raised baskets, creek, & some trees too. Nice signs. Disc only park.

Cons:

Baskets can be difficult to see (all grey) and most tees marked with metal plates on ground which can be difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

A buddy has told me that he won't play this course in summer since parts get over grown. This may be at the whim of town maintenance crew. However, course was in great shape late July. I had no trouble locating my numerous tosses that sailed off the fairway.

This course is set up similarly to ball golf course.
