On a nice day... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mostly wide open...good place for beginners

Cons:

NEXT TEE signs could be better marked, as with the actual tee boxes. Bad throws can hit picnic benches, and people

Other Thoughts:

Played on a day that was blistering hot, with little shade (on the front 9)...then heavy rain for back 9, but the 2 first-timers that went with us still loved the game

Tale of two worlds 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 13, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

27 holes with two flypad tees, and nice yellow discatcher baskets. Excellent use of rolling elevation and variety of shot type. Tee markers with hole distance. Mandos are marked geese on trees. The actual 18 Red holes have lots of elevation change, mostly open with lots of ob and fast greens. There are a couple ace-runs, and some super long bombs. The 9 Cross Country holes are a crazy mix of heavily wooded holes with some elevation. Bathrooms in pavilion. Scenic views and wildlife.

Cons:

Flypads not all level and can be slippery when wet. Could use some better signage. Park patrons can be an issue especially when they decide to camp on the fairway. Parking lots and park roads come into play as ob. Groundhog holes can be dangerous. Poison ivy and some thick rough in the summer on the CC holes. No swimming allowed in lake.

Other Thoughts:

The Red course often has wind coming off the lake to make things more interesting with the lack of trees. The Blue course is my favorite of the two being more wooded, technical, consistent, and secluded although the Red offers a nice contrast. Codorus DG as a whole, 54 holes is one of the best days of disc-golf one can ask for with awesome scenic views! The whole course offers a lot of variety for a rank beginner to the seasoned pro. Also has a mini disc golf course. Lots of people and activities in the park with a marina and camping.

Scenic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice alternative to Blue when not too windy, particularly following significant rain.
Little 'patio rocks' at hand.
Well looked after.

Cons:

Proximity of picnic tables, athough I have never had a particular problem dealing. .

Other Thoughts:

I unintentionally stunned an unsuspecting groundhog with a drive on Hole 3.
The double mando on the back 9 is challenging.

Fun, not special 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course was fun. Lots of open play, challenging distnaces, and a fair amount of up/down with some trees mixed in.

Cons:

Played this one after getting chased off blue by all the poison ivy. Red had even worse patches -- the bank along 1 and 2 had thickets of it, one tree on 7 looked like a chrsitmas tree form the PI even though the tree's brances started at 20 ft. But with the holes mostly open, with a bit of luck you can avoid it all. If you can, play on a weekday, because this course goes through picnic grounds.

Other Thoughts:

In the mid-atlantic states, poison ivy is very prevalant, and the first requriement for all courses is to make sure your players will not be suffering from it 4 days later. Neither codorus course has done anything that I could see to control the poison ivy, and this is a huge negative.

BEAUTIFUL COURSE 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Beautiful scenery
-Although course is open, many shots are used/needed
-Open, and not overly challenging
-Par is attainable
-Very well maintained. Grass was mowed, and everything was well kept
-Available scorecard on this website came in handy when playing the red and blue course
-Holes by the water were really neat
-Did I mention that this was beautiful

Cons:

-Was a little tricky to follow in a couple of places. We did have a map, but still at times we were turned around trying to find where to go

Other Thoughts:

I don't have much bad to say about this course. I would play the red course 8 out of 10 times over the blue course. The holes down by lake marburg were great and the water definitely comes into play if you are a RHBH. As a twosome we played 36 holes in less than 4 hours today on a beautiful sunny morning. There was not a single other player on either course when we started at 8am. I can't wait to go back. If you have the option to play red or blue.....play the red first!

Don't miss the CC holes! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mostly wide-open if you like that sort of thing. More gorgeous views and excellent park maintenance. CC holes are designed for modern discs and are more challenging, winding through the woods. Two pads per hole. Many OB roads, parking lots and even water come into play, which is great for tourneys.

Cons:

No rec tees, so weaker arms may be frustrated. Most of this layout comes very close to picnic tables, trails, roads and parking lots, so certain holes may be unplayable during busy seasons.

Other Thoughts:

If it's really busy, you should consider playing all 27 blue holes and the 9 red CC holes, and skipping the traditional red layout.

Red Headed Step Child 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has some holes with pleasant views of Lake Marburg most notably #3-6. Plenty of holes to really air it out here, unlike the blue course which requires more precise drives...you can recklessly rip here more often. What the Red course lacks in tight fairways it makes up for in wind conditions. A vastly different experience than the Blue course. The CC9 holes are much better than the front 18. These offer tight fairways and some true cedar holes.

Cons:

Not nearly as well marked as the Blue course. I got lost several times. Many of those helpful arrows were missing. Imagine some punk kid has a collection in his room somewhere? Several Mandos which are needed to promote safety but which kind are annoying after a while. Much of the holes 7-16 play near access roads and between or alongside of parking lots. It just does not really feel like a disc golf course as much as it seems like your just throwing your disc around a parking lot next to a big windy lake. Can you say look out for that car! CC9 tend to be a bit mushy but I have experienced worse. Seems this is a more used part of the park so I would imagine those great views that make this course fun are ruined by picnicers and parkgoers who have every right to be there as you do. I played off season so no issues for me. It's a shared area of park so it is hard to relax as there will be foot and auto traffic interfering with play. Just does not feel as exclusive of a disc golf setting as the Blue course and not nearly as good with the exception of some views which as I noted will most likely be spoiled in season.

Other Thoughts:

Like the Blue course the Red course could benefit by scrapping many of the dangerous and unaesthetic parking lot holes and condensing/refining the course with the CC9 and making this a killer half open and half wooded 18. Again like the Blue, sometimes less is more!

Gotta Play all 54 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The full 54 at Codorus are what make this course a great course.

Tournaments here are typically 40 holes, with multiple combined holes which really makes the course a challenge.

Blue + X holes are more difficult than the Red + CC holes, but the Red Course has excellent views of the lake. The CC holes play between #1 & #18 Red.

Lots of shot variety, a little bit roller friendly on the Red Course.

Cons:

This park gets lots of traffic, and road traffic, and other park patrons can be disctracting on the course. I have seen the patrons using picnic tables near Red 2 come into play at tournaments.

Special layouts for tournaments are not always available ... Hole 10 played as an island green is sweet!

Other Thoughts:

I would rate Codorus overall a 4.5 ... but when you rate each course separate that is hard to give out.

If you can not play all 54, then at least try to play a tournament 40, those layouts are posted in various news groups. Red 8 to Hole 9, and Red 12 to Hole 13 are some of the classics here. Red 1 to Red 2 has been used too!

Lake Backdrop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

27-holes, three 9-hole loops (1-9, 10-18, 1CC-9CC) all ending near the same parking lot.

Plenty of parking, permanent bathrooms, water fountains.

Two rubber teepads per hole. Signs on each basket pointing you to next tee.

Map and scoresheet available for downloading.

Some mandos to make things a bit more interesting.

Very scenic - many holes will play with the lake serving as the backdrop.

Favourite hole: #4. Long, fairly open hole with the lake to your left the entire length of it.

Cons:

Map needs a bit of updating - only one basket for #2 (the farther one); hole #6 plays uphill, not along lake.

A good number of holes pay along/near OB roads/parking lots.

Least favourite hole: #3CC. Between you and the basket 265-feet away, find hundreds of 6-inch diameter pine trees randomly arranged.

Other Thoughts:

For the most part, the first 18 holes are fairly open, with an occasional tree or mando to make you alter your approach.

Holes 10-18 seemed much easier (by seven strokes) to my friend and I who played the course.

The cross-country holes, labeled 1CC-9CC, were mostly wooded, slightly more lefty-oriented, and the ground was much marshier than the other red holes.

Good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun and well maintained. Hole 2 is more like a par 5. Some holes located near the parking lots that add some interesting and maybe expensive challenges.

Cons:

Picnic areas so close to the fairways they may as well be in the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Very fun course.

Expansive Course With Great Views 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2003 Played the course:never

Pros:

Views of Lake Marburg, well maintained, hole variety and length, more holes than you know what to do with.

Cons:

Some holes play too close to or among the parking lots and other facilities.

Other Thoughts:

This expansive array of disc golf courses has just about everything needed for a top-notch disc golf experience: shot variety, open and wooded holes, lots of hills, more holes than many people could play in a day, and best of all, fantastic views. Reminiscent of Patapsco Valley but even hillier and with more of a view, Codorus lacks only water challenges and tee pads, but still has much to offer.

When I was there in spring 2003, Codorus had 36 holes, what is now known as the red and blue courses, but did not have the extra nine holes that has been added to each of these courses. Both courses seem equally cool to me - the blue one, comprised of 18 of the original 27 holes, has a better mix of woods and open shots, but the red course has more holes with good views. Holes #5 through #13 on the red course, which I believe were the first nine (of now many) added to the original 27-hole layout, play in and around some picnic areas and parking lots, however, and may have to be skipped during the peak summer season. Both courses feature mostly traditional par 3 holes but some longer holes too - not like Patapsco and Rockburn Branch but still longer than average overall. Unlike those two courses, Codorus does ease up on you with a couple of shorter holes too. Also, except for water, every challenge is presented out here, and more so in the up and down hills category. In fact, Codorus is one of the hillier courses I've played. The blue course is easy to follow, with most holes featuring little signs directing you to the next tee, but I did have some trouble with the red course, since it doesn't have those little signs and isn't as easy to follow either way. But it was worth the effort.

In the end, the lasting impression of Codorus is the setting - the views of Lake Marburg and the surrounding countryside are fantastic. For the most part, the two (plus) courses alone would be well worth a road trip, especially if you're already in say Baltimore as I often am, but the setting makes Codorus one of the best kept secrets in disc golf, featuring great views, a variety of challenges, and not one but two well maintained courses on some pretty land in its own right. Just watch out for the groundhog holes.

Favorite Hole - #9 Red course. Long hole along side of hill with Lake Marbug on two sides and basket right on edge of the lake.

Not bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 7, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Part of the 54 hole marathon available at Codorus; Nice mixture of open and wooded holes. Nice place to have a picnic. Mini course also on site and open to the public.

Cons:

I didn't bring water and paid the price. Several holes had nasty bushes, fortunately I didn't lose any discs.

Other Thoughts:

I'd love to be back sometime.

Relaxing golf course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

There are very few trees you need to contend with, so this makes it a great course for beginners. There is plenty of beautiful scenery to take in, especially on holes 3, 4, and 5. The course is very well maintained, and there isn't a lot of "bad territory", but there are also some challenging shots for the pro in you, especially if you play the cross country holes.

Cons:

There are no benches to sit on, there are very few distance lengths mentioned, and there are no maps on site. Those problems are minor, but the major problem is picnickers. They are pretty much a given while you play, especially from the 4th hole through the 7th hole. This means that you will likely be forced to skip parts of or entire holes if you pick a popular time to visit the park. But if you go to the cross country holes, you shouldn't have a problem with the picnickers.

Other Thoughts:

You can enjoy this course in shorts and sandals, but you may want to consider jeans and sneakers if you go into the cross country course. Make sure you consider sunscreen, because you will not be in the shade a decent portion of the time, except in the cross country holes.
