A wooded treat 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Cowskin (Colwich) has 3 sets of tees and multiple pin placements per hole. Tee pads are ample and have good grip. Thanks to the KDGA for donating to the course improvement fund in 2018.
Signage is adequate and has been updated recently. The flow is logical and there is a solid mix of short, moderate, longer length holes. Dog leg left and right holes are present as well as open and technical holes.
Each pad (yellow, red, and blue) provide a different look on each hole.
Cowskin leans towards the technical wooded style of course so there are some very nice lines here. You must shape shots to stay in the fairway. There are a few more open holes as well. A good balance. This course will test every aspect of your game, and mental game as well.
Baskets get moved with regularity so the layout never gets stale.

Cons:

*Can get slick after a solid rain due to the hard pack in the fairways. This often times leads to mud on the tee pads making a solid plant tough.
*The grass does get overgrown from time to time.
*No trashcans or benches, that will bother some
*Depending on what tee you are playing and what pin placement the basket is in there are a few holes with a bit of a walk from basket to the next tee. Not a huge con however.

Other Thoughts:

One of (if not) the best courses in the Wichita metro area Cowskin is a popular play for players of all skill levels. This course gets a lot of love locally and with good reason as there is something here for everyone. Yellow tees are a bit shorter than the reds but are just as challenging. The blue tees add length to make things even that more difficult. You can play all 3 layouts and see 3 different lines on this course.
This course will test all aspects of your game and you will need to be able to hit lines and shape shots in order to score well here. BH, FH, turnover shots, etc will be needed to achieve par on many of the holes.
Cowskin is a quiet and peaceful course that is away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Come out and unwind and throw some awesome holes. There is a lot of history on this course, just look up at the trees on hole 18.
This course is always being improved and many upgrades have recently been made. New tee pads and new MVP baskets just to name a few. There are plans to install more holes west of the existing course and a championship gold layout is also being worked on. This is a course that is both satisfying and humbling at the same time. It can get to you if you let it but it will also improve your overall game. You owe it to yourself to play this course. Its a quality track and a course that you will want to come back to again and again.
A shout out to the volunteers that keep this amazing course trimmed, groomed, and the baskets moved. DG in the Wichita area is very lucky to have this gem readily available.

variety is king 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 17, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

WIth 3 different tee pads and 2 basket locations for every hole this course really is different every time. Unlike many courses where the difference between tee pads is that one is longer but is otherwise the same shot, Here the different tee pads make many of the holes completely different. And, unlike many courses where there are a couple basket locations, but seem to only change locations once every 3 months, I have played this course 5 times in the last 8 weeks, there has been a different configuration of baskets every time I go. There are a lot of trees, some tight fairways and tricky lines, but not ridiculously so. There are a few holes that are more open. The course definitely tests your ability to throw a variety of shots with control. The course has variety! So many courses are fairly redundant from hole to hole. Not so at Colwich. Variety is king.

Cons:

There are no concrete tee pads. There is not a good map of the course, so navigation can be a bit of a challenge if you go for the first time without someone who has played it before. Only a bit of modest elevation change.

Pros:

The Baskets ARE there!
Unique Fun course
Easy/Aided Navigation
Red and Blue Pads AND optional Pole alternative Target
Was Mowed and Wacked
Plenty of woods, funky Osage, woods
Great variety of lines required, to score well (no Overhand-Cheat shots)
Good Bridges
Water Hazards

Cons:

Too Funky for the general populous

Other Thoughts:

I'm indifferent to Natural vs Crete Pads. Course currently has Natural Pads
Hit the Line or hit an early tree, could discourage beginners, but that's just the nature of this Beast.
Course rating will end up 3.7...
