Field Work With Baskets 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Rarely crowded. During the week, you may even have the course to yourself
- Wide open. While the lack of obstacles is also a "con," the openness of the course offers this feature: you can see all nine baskets from each of the nine tees (once you know where to look). If you wanted to get creative, you have many tee/basket combinations ranging from very short to 1000'-plus safari holes.
-Good for beginners and other not very skilled players. The first two holes are legit distances (358' and 401'), every other hole is between 200-300'. Not a lot of length and not many obstacles make this a course where your newbie friends and kids can play without getting frustrated
- Easy to navigate. The next tee pad is pretty close to the last basket all the way around
- It's a FANTASTIC place to practice. I play here at least twice a week and cannot remember the last time I kept score. The openness of many of the holes (and lack of many other people playing) allows you to empty half (or more) of your bag off of every tee without any real risk of losing a disc - it's really field work with baskets and what shots you can practice is only limited by your imagination. Fieldwork in the traditional sense is hard to come by around this area because all the soccer/football fields/empty spaces are almost always in use - this course is a notable exception.
- Fast. You can usually play the nine holes in half an hour as a solo
- Clean bathroom and water fountain near the first tee
- The DG locals are friendly, even to noobs. The OG course designer is out there regularly and will ALWAYS offer helpful technique tips - he was extremely helpful to me when I was new to the game

Cons:

- Boring if you just play the nine holes as designed more than a few times. Playing the service road that runs through the course as a hazard/OB adds a tiny bit more challenge
-#4 and #7 are virtually the same hole - wide open and short (210' and 200', respectively) and point in the same direction so the wind is the same on both. #6 and #9 have a similar problem (both 270' and wide open) although those two at least are in different directions
-Obstacles come into play on only a few of the holes (unless you create alternate tees on some of them - the local group does this for its monthly 27-hole tournament)
- The park users who aren't disc golfers are, as a usual rule, pretty oblivious to the course itself and the dangers, etc. of flying discs. This is rarely more than a mild annoyance, though. The worst example is the big tree guarding hole #8 provides some rare shade at that end of the park and I've seen it used as a picnic area by unsuspecting town folk. It's impossible to safely play the hole in that instance, but it is a RARE issue
- Not much shade when it gets hot (as it can do here)
- Some lower parts of the course flood during the winter rains, but not to the point of complete unplayability if you have good, water-resistant shoes.
- The grass can get fairly high if the parks/rec folks aren't mowing regularly (i.e. when it's wet), just have to keep a little better eye on where your disc goes

Other Thoughts:

- There's been a recent trend of people marking up the tee signs commemorating their aces. If this is you, please stop
- During Daylight Savings hours, there is a very low-key weekly every Wednesday night
- The monthly tournament is every second Saturday. 27 holes with many longer, more challenging alternative tees. It is handicapped (once you get three qualifying scores) and we could use some new blood
Pro tip: The "Pavilion" of the park is located near the third hole. The parking lot there (follow the signs) is a better place to park than by the first tee. You can then use the third basket as a practice basket and start on the 4th hole. The advantage to this is that you start with the shorter holes and work your way up to the two longer ones (#1 and #2) once you've warmed up a bit

This is my first review...enjoy!

Great for practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open fairways good for practice drives. Never crowded.

Cons:

Out in the open. Wear a hat or play early mornings.

Other Thoughts:

This is where you should hone your driving skills as well as practice with your putter. Also good for mid-range tee off practice.

11 holes if you start on #3. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You can play 11 holes by starting at hole #3 by the community center in the center of the park. Tee off from one of the many alternate tee markings in the parking lot to the south of the center and aim for basket #3. Then play holes 4,5,6,7,8 and 9. As you walk towards hole #1, there is a 4x4 partially buried next to the old horse hitching post. Tee off from there aiming at the practice basket. Then continue to shoot holes, 1,2 and finish with hole #3.

Holes 1, 2, 3 and 8 have permanently marked alternate tee pads on the concrete walkway or asphalt. The alternate tee pad for hole #1 is on the walkway near the practice basket, #2 is behind the actual tee pad on the concrete walk way, #3 is in the parking lot near the community center and #8 is on the asphalt path south of the permanent tee pad.

Cons:

Few obstacles unless alternate tee are used.

Other Thoughts:

Elk Grove Chainrackers DG Club plays a monthly tournament on the second Saturday of each month that offers 27 holes. Alternate tee pads are marked permanently on some holes, and ad hock for tournament play on others.

Relaxing Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Practice Basket
-Not Crowded
-Well Groomed Park

Cons:

-Short Holes
-Not Many Obstacles

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this little course. It is the perfect course to bring the family or for beginners. There are a few longer holes, but mostly the holes are open and short. The park is very nice and the grass is perfect. They did the the best they could with the few trees that are there. Hole nine ends at the beginning, so playing multiple rounds is easy.

Good starter course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Short holes give newer players a shot at success
- Level for the most part, reduces fatigue
- Wide open, good for long sweeping shots with understable plastic
- Easy to get through in about half an hour
- Rarely (if ever) busy

Cons:

- Shortness can become a turn-off quickly
- Course is a bit too open - lack of challenge hurts its replay value
- A lot of hard, dusty ground in the summer
- Course suffers from some drainage and mud problems in the winter
- Pedestrian paths run through the course. A lot of people understand to be careful walking through there, but there are still a good number of people that stroll through the middle, either unaware or intentionally ignoring the fact that they're on a course with flying plastic. Be careful when you see people walking near.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great for working on form, new styles of throwing, and introducing newer players to disc golf. The ease of the course really begins to wear on the player, though. I go to school nearby, so I do play there from time to time, although if it were feasible, I'd likely go to another course instead.

As a practice and screw-around course, this is great for getting a round in in between classes or on your lunch break.

There are an alternate set of tees with GPS locations listed on discgolfstats.com if you're looking to change up your game here. I would post them here, but there's no way to show them on DGCR. =/
