Great Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty wide open 9 hole course. It's a great place for beginners to gain some experience, intermediate players to work out new shots and advanced players to hone their intemediate short game. Plays really fast (at least when nobody else is there). Two of us played the 9 hole layout 3 times in an hour and a half, having the course mostly to ourselves.

Cons:

Very short and wide open. It's in the Elk Grove Park which has lot's of other attractions. I could see this being difficult to play on a weekend - the course is off by itself, but there's plenty of opportunity for general crowds to wander through it pn their way to another section of the park. The course is pretty short (3-4 holes in the 350 range, 2-3 in the 300 and the rest near 200) and offers little technical challenge - my playing partner (with a better than average arm)was overshooting some holes off the tee with a mid-range disc. There are a few trees which add a little positioning challenge, but nothing compared to most courses I've played. It's so open that it can be hard to focus on your direction. I liken it to a "hard-hat" ball golf course in that most of the holes run back and forth alongside each other. On a crowded day, I could easily see having to dodge other players on other holes (or yourself on thiers).

Other Thoughts:

Although not particularly challenging, it's a great place to go and work out kinks in your game or learn new shots. It would be a perfect course to introduce newbs to the game. The general openness leads to not being worried about sticking discs in trees when working out Tomahawks or Thumbers. You could spend an entire round using one style of drive - any style you wanted to work on - and not have a terrible time getting to the baskets for par ops. Of course scoring doesn't matter when you're working stuff out, but having baskets to work towards helps to keep the practice in focus. While probably not as good as just finding an open field to work out some repetetive practice, it's the next best thing. My rating is based on kind of an average: from a challenge perspective, the course would be about a 1-1.5 (even a newb like me could be parring - or better - this course in short time); from a practice persprctive, it's an easy 5!
