Variety is the spice of life. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fallasburg was the last stop on a 3-day Michigan disc golf road trip. It was just a short drive off the highway on a really nice backcountry road to the course. We were directed here by some locals as one of the better courses to play in the area.

Pulling into the parking lot, there is a porta potty and a large dirt parking lot. Grab a shade spot if you can. Pulling in it looked like we were about to play a very nice flat course with beautifully mowed fairways. Hole 1 was beautiful and really set the tone for the course. Hole 2 was kind of a letdown and the only hole on the course I didn't like. Has that typical way-too-tight-with-such-thick-rough Michigan vibe that many courses have up this way. But that was the only hole like that.

The rest of the course revealed surprise after surprise. Huge uphill holes. Beautiful downhill holes. Holes with multiple flight paths, holes with lots of trees, holes with steep hills and danger of rollaway. The course evolved constantly. 270 feet seems to be a loved distance of holes on the course and there are a lot that play around that length, but they all have their own unique character to keep it exciting.

Overall this was a great course to play, even in the 90+ degree heat we had that day. It was well worth the visit and is a solid course with quality hole design, enjoyability and aesthetics. Just a really enjoyable round of golf for me.

After 29 years of playing on 300+ courses, this is the kind of course I am happy to find travelling.

There were also 2 loops to play a 24-hole layout but we didn't play those holes. They looked nice and I imagine they really add to the entire experience also.

Cons:

I can really think of many cons??? It was easy to follow the course. Never needed a map or anything. No water to fill up water bottles and just a porta potty.

Other Thoughts:

We had just played Renegades, Flip City, and Whitehall and this was the last course on the trip. I would put it at 3/4 on that list of courses that we played. Renegades and Flip were beautiful. Whitehall was lots of fun but repetitive and Fallasburg had a little bit of all of them wrapped into it. It's a super-solid course that can played by all skill levels. Not much rough to end up in. A beautiful place to play disc golf. And it's isolated from other activities so it's just you and the course which is what I always like. If I lived in the area, I imagine I would be hitting this course up quite often as it felt like it had a lot of replay value based on the holes and how you could score.

A lot of people might rate this course higher than I have. I gave it a 3.5 which I would put closer to 3.8 or 3.9, but I try to keep all of my ratings on par with other courses I have rated. Any course I have rated over 3.0 is a quality course, and this was an excellent course that has good signs, baskets, pads, and course flow. Don't miss it if you are nearby.

A Challenging Course in the Woods 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 2, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is located in a mostly wooded area, but it has a decent variety of layouts. Some are kind of long, some are kind of short, some have doglegs, some have blind tee shots, and some are kind of open. Some holes encourage sidearm throws while others encourage backhand throws. Some holes are outside the woods and have tricky obstacles that come into play. Occasionally the elevation comes into play. Each hole has multiple basket locations and multiple tee pads. The signage at the tee pads are real helpful.

Cons:

Most of the holes are in the woods and a lot of them are real narrow because of all the trees between you and the basket. The fairways on these holes are sometimes surrounded by dense woods. For most players, these holes become frustrating to play after awhile because it's so difficult for their discs to land on the narrow fairways and so easy for their discs to hit a tree after traveling a short distance or sail deep into the dense woods, making it real difficult to get a low score on those holes. Some of these fairways look more like walking paths than disc golf fairways. The 5th hole is a great example of this: It's long, uphill, and the super narrow fairway is surrounded with trees and thick bushes. The 6th hole doesn't even look like it has a fairway. There's nothing but trees between you and the basket (that hole could've been setup a lot better). The weeds throughout this course can grow tall and thick during the summer, making it tricky to find your disc in them, and it can also be difficult to avoid the weeds on some of the holes. The mosquitoes and horseflies can also be pretty bad during the summer, and some of the holes have poison ivy in the rough. Although I like the 18th hole, it's a little strange in that it looks like it has two baskets. Both are kind of close to the parking lot, and it's not clear which one you're supposed to aim for. Although one of them has the number 18 on it, but you can't see it from a distance. I'm guessing the other one is supposed to be used for practice, but if that's true then it's strange that it's located close enough to potentially interfere with people playing the 18th hole. Also, there are a few areas on this course where it's not clear where you need to go in order to get to the next hole. Some signs in those areas would be helpful.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, there are some nice layouts throughout this course, but there are also several holes that are real narrow and difficult. This is a good course for more experienced players who love a good challenge, but for everyone else it can be rather difficult and sometimes also frustrating because of how unforgiving some of the holes are.

Fallsburg 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 13, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There is a good mixture of left to right and right to left holes to challenge anybody's shot making ability. Concrete tee pads with brooms nearby on some holes. some holes to just open up and let it fly. makes you work for every shot. Fairly easy to navigate around the course. Practice basket near parking lot.

Cons:

It really needs signage badly you can follow the path to the tee pad but on a lot of holes you can't really see the basket from the tee. Not too crazy about hole 16, tee pad for 7 sometimes looks like its aimed at the basket for 13.

Other Thoughts:

Would recommend that first timers play this course with someone who has played here before. Hole 1 starts out with a long drive ability with hole tuck in by pine tree way down there. Hole 5 you need long accurate straight shots seeing that this hole runs completely uphill and the fairway is only about 9 feet wide the entire length with heavy brush on both sides. Hole 8 opens up into a large field where you can just let a long drive fly. Hole 9 has a nice long narrow fairway that opens up about halfway to the hole. Hole 10 the basket is on the hill directly in front of pad and slightly left of it. Hole 11 goes straight then turns left. Hole 12 has a nice long drive opportunity if you can navigate around the two skinny trees on the right side of fairway. Hole 13 be careful on your approach shot to the basket. The basket is on a ridge and both sides drop of steeply. Hole 15 is a nice long hole going downhill. Hole 16 is the monster on this course. All you see from the tee is a bunch of trees and brush. The hole is past those and past the next set of trees. You need careful disc placement on this hole. If playing with partners would highly recommend the you send out someone to spot where your disc lands. This hole can easily eat discs. If you lose your disc in the bushes be sure to look high and low. the bush may drop your disc to the ground or it may hold onto it in its top branches. All in all it is a Great course to play. I would highly recommend that everyone at least try this course.

A Disc Please 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 11, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is set up very nicely, Each Tee pad has its own little bit of difficulty. There seems to be such a wide arrange of throws at each hole as well. Some holes have multiple paths to take which can be nice for sidarm and forearm throwers. Always a change of scenery with fairway width changes. Coule be wide open one hole and tight with many tress the next. Makes for a challenging course, one of the best in the Grand Rapids area. You will find it very satisfying to really hit the Line of the hole! Each hole will bring a new surprise it seems, which can make or break your day! I would like to say its a very fun yet challenging course.

Cons:

A few holes with large hills and long walks if you dont like long walks.. Some holes are not always easy to see. sometimes would be good to play with someone who knows the course well enough.

Make sure that you have plenty of time to play this course, a few times I have been there there might be a few larger crowds in front of me, so try to play through or just be ready to kick back and take it easy all day!!

terrain needs some luvin' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- a variety of different hole styles.
-terrain varied.
-elevation on most
-surrounding park area quite beautiful
-let it rip on the super long ones
-SOME cement tee pads
-New baskets

Cons:

-SOME cement tee pads.
-tee pads that are there have zero traction.
-NO signage. major con here
-long holes with blind placements

Other Thoughts:

This is the course that people say (including a few reviews here) is the best in the Grand Rapids area. So we gave it a shot. The course is set off from the main Fallasburg scenic park. When you first drive in you have the feeling you might be playing on some amazingly manicured park, but this is not the case. Although for a disc golf course it is very well mowed for it's length.

Holes that are super long and technical in their placement. Ripper holes, tree holes, a peninsula hole, an up a two sand track hole(one of the most humbling holes there) and a few very cool ravine holes through the trees. The variety is outstanding.

The problem comes from complete lack of signage and kind of an inconsistent tee pad set up. The cement tee pads that are there are a very large rectangle, great size...BUT there is no traction built into it's surface. With Michigan and it's sandy environment, most of the tee pads were slippery as hell. No brooms around, so a pine tree branch was needed to sweep the sand. Signage, none. HUGE problem here especially for next hole location, distance, and hole number.

This is a course that has tons of potential with a bit more love, attention, and funds for signage. It seems to fall into the 2.5 to 3.5 category that most of the Grand Rapids area courses fall into. Worth a visit? Yeah, sure. Destination course...maybe someday hopefully.

Difficult But Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 12, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very challenging holes if you're looking for something fresh to play. Good use of natural elevation changes and using the elements to create hazards. Gives any chance for intermediate and pros playing it for the first time to have a fair chance at winning. Good variety of shots and not very crowded.

Cons:

If driving far distances frustrates you, this course is NOT for you! Some of these are insanely long. If you have never played, be prepared to walk far ahead to find the next basket. And yes, hole 16 means the basket is literally next to the river. Some of the backwooded areas are heavily wooded and this time of year with all of the dead leaves, it can be hard to find your frisbee or, if you throw off the fairway into some thick brush.

Other Thoughts:

I would play this course alot more often if it wasn't so far away.

Pros:

fun course with a variety of wooded and open holes and short, long, and really long holes. also has a variety of tight and open fairways. the scenery is beautiful. you experience grasslands, shrub lands, pine forests, and hardwood forests. also, it's not too crowded.

Cons:

the course isn't marked very well and can be confusing on where to go for the first timer to the course. a couple of the holes are just a pain. especially holes 5 and 16 (i think those are the right numbers). hole 5 is about 600 ft. and uphill the entire way with a very narrow fairway and hole 16 is close to 800 ft. and it starts out kinda narrow.

Other Thoughts:

not a forgiving course at all, if bogey isn't in your vocabulary it will be after you play this course. i think it's nice to play a tough course like this from time to time, i just wouldn't want this to be my main course.
i'm one of those guys that just plays every hole on every course as a par 3 (i aint do math good) but this course definitely has some legit par 4's and 5's on it they're just not specified yet.
