Eh, not great

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 26, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fox Hill is an old course with a variety of wooded holes, with several that play into or out of the open. There was clearly a lot of work put into this course a while back, since there are bridges across the creeks, durable signs, mulch, and things that guard against weeds overtaking the fairways. Hole 2 has a manicured green.

Every hole has some kind of tee sign, and it's always easy to find the next tee. Because the holes are all short, this makes for a really fast round.

A handful of holes have legitimately interesting lines (5, 11, 13, and 15), with some kind of opportunity for danger, or multiple lines available, or some of both. While some of these are a little strange, a lot of them certainly have a lot going for them.

Holes play into, out of, or through the woods. This gives quite a lot of variety to the course, as it is heavily wooded without being obnoxiously wooded.

Cons:

Many holes have really weird shot shapes. Holes 4, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 17 all come to mind as ones that there's just no regular line that you can expect to have a reasonable shot on. Some have super tight gaps between trees right off the tee. The only advantage to this is that playing here gives you practice on upshots that you might find elsewhere after an errant shot.

I'm not a fan of the super tight gaps, especially with how short and straightforward the course is. Holes 4, 8, 12, and 17 just kind of don't make sense. Some trimming of branches could help on some of those without ruining the hole.

Most holes are pretty short. While there's enough foliage to make up for this, it would be nice to have reason to use distance drivers more than on 11, 13, and 17. Not only that, there are hardly any hills to speak of, which would have made some holes much more interesting.

The tee pads are pretty lousy, and many are uneven or have the gravel spilling out. Rocks have been added to the tees that... makes them way worse. The baskets are complete trash, with rusted chains, chains missing, or chains not connected to the center ring. As a result, there's little unique about this course that makes it stand out above anything else. I think there has been some maintenance done recently, but this course needs a whole lot more love if it is going to be in good shape. Even things like the green on 2 don't look as good as they probably used to.

Other Thoughts:

There are short tee pads on most if not every hole. They're almost entirely pointless, and some are hard to find. Some of them turn the hole into a long putt, while others still leave you with a difficult line.
Unless you really want a super short course, just play the longs.

As far as school courses go, this is one of the better ones, but Fox Hill needs some work for me to give it a higher rating. If you're just stopping by, there are plenty of better courses to see.

Pros:

+ several difficult shots
+ some of the tightest tunnel shots in KC
+ navigation is very easy
+ makes very good use of the property

Cons:

- teepads are small and gravel
- baskets only have 1 set of chains
- barely any distance

Other Thoughts:

this is a kids course built for beginners. That said, it is still challenging just because the lines required to hit shots. Good place to practice woods and mids.
