Steve the Tree 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Quick round potential.
-Good hole layout to encourage different lines.
-Tee signs with length.
-Concrete tees.
-Goals in great shape.
-A little elevation comes into play.
-Playground on site for kids.
-Paths to next tee well worn so navigation not bad.

Cons:

-Short holes in general.
-No layout on tee signs.

Other Thoughts:

This is my kids favorite park. There is a nice playground and a huge tree onsite that my kids call "Steve the Tree." I never played disc golf when we lived here before, so I was excited to get a chance to play here no that we are back.

This is a fairly short course that is not particularly difficult. It is another good option for beginners and kids to be able to play. I like the greenery and the layout in general. It has a few holes that required different shots to get close. I think my favorite hole was #4. It is about the only one where you might need a driver if you are intermediate or better.

I enjoyed my round here due just to the memories my kids have of the place and seeing Steve again. This is not a challenge, but good for a quick round.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole city park course great for newer players, practice, or quick rounds. It mostly open grassy fairways with large mature trees as obstacles. There were options for trying different shot shapes (straight, left, or right), also good for learning. Holmes also has quite a bit of elevation both up and down and is a good place for people to learn how to deal with hills, on drives especially. (In contrast to nearby Gower which is mostly flat.)

Tees and baskets were easy to spot and were in fine playable shape. Navigation was pretty easy using a little common sense despite the lack of tee signs or directional aids. (note that hole #5 is on the other side of the tennis courts and kind of apart from the rest of the course- the map on DGCR clearly shows this if in doubt).

This was a fun course, though not very difficult. The big challenge for experienced players is in trying to get 2's instead of being disappointed with an easy 3.

Big parking lot, and course was easy to find.

Cons:

Biggest con is lots of tee signs were missing (seems to be a problem for all the courses in this part of town). Course is still playable without them however, and it does not affect navigation too bad.

When busy, beware of other park goers as the course plays close to walking areas, playgrounds, and ball fields, especially because lower level skill players with less accuracy and control will likely be throwing here. Also, the first few holes play alongside neighborhood roads and it is real easy to end up on or across them so be aware of cars.

Some of the holes are pretty close together with little separating fairways, so be mindful of other players if the course was busy and crowded.

Other than a couple of hilly shots, there is nothing too special here. Pretty standard beginner to lower intermediate 9 hole course in a park.

Other Thoughts:

I am glad there are courses like this. I wish we had some intro 9-holers where I live to help teach others disc golf and to ease the high volume of slow-playing high-scoring newer players on the advanced courses. Holmes DGC serves a purpose and is perfect for the right level of player.

If you are traveling to the area, my recommendation is to skip it and go play Timmons which is very close by. Gower and Holmes were close to our hotel on a disc golf trip and we had some extra time one afternoon for some quick DG, so we decided to check these out.

Pros:

Decent grass areas for tee boxes. Holes are close together so fairly easy to find. Great for beginners, who need to avoid any and all chances of losing a disc.

Cons:

Very short course, not challenging or difficult to play.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the area there are other courses that have more to offer.

One of the better 9-holers

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a nice neighborhood park. For a 9-holer, it's one of the better ones I've played. I was actually surprised how much I liked it.
- Course has great variety. It's more wooded than open and makes great use of elevation, and mandos, for some interesting holes. For such a small park, they did a great job squeezing in so many quality holes. What it lacks in length, it more than makes up for in difficulty.
- Almost every hole was enjoyable. #3, 4, 6 & 7 were all good holes that'd fit in anywhere.
- Course is 5 minutes from Timmons Park, so it's a good warm-up or cool down after playing there.
- As with most 9-holers, it wasn't crowded. You can play through twice in no time.

Cons:

The layout of a couple holes presents potential problems. The fairway for #2 includes having to potentially throw over a bench. Obviously, you'll have to throw far around this if people are there.
- Going from #6 basket to #7 tee, you either have to walk up the fairway of one of those 2 holes. Both holes are downhill, so you're turning around and walking right back up the hill.
- #5 was hard to find. After finishing #4, the only tee pad you see is for #6. The tee for #5 is on the other side of the tennis courts. The rest of the course is easy to navigate.
- A couple fairways involving throwing towards tee pads for other holes. Be aware of this if others are on the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is the better of the two 9-hole courses in Greenville.
- #4 is a seriously tough hole. 320 foot uphill, so it plays much longer, with strategically placed trees and rough. Once you get up the hill, the basket is behind another tree, creating a challenging second or third shot. This hole actually was tougher than any hole at Timmons.
- Not many easy birdie chances. Only two short/easy holes, others require solid tee shots for birdie chances.
- This is definitely worth the short drive from Timmons to check out.

Slightly Hilly Rec/Beginner Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a nice little 9 hole course set in a typical city park. The course is a little too long to be considered a pitch and putt so I call it a beginner or recreational course. There is some rolling, hilly terrain to play with. The pads and baskets are fine for this course. No next tee signs but they're really not needed. Easily my favorite hole was # 7. It's a 195 ft. downhill throw with a slight anhyser needed for RHBH throwers. The downhill fairway follows a natural tunnel to the basket. The course just has a nice flow and feel to it. ACE ops abound here.

Cons:

# 2 was missing the tee sign. # 5 is kinda hard to find, it's over beyond the tennis courts. There's no where to really air it out here.

Other Thoughts:

Another "What you see is what you get course." It's great if you live close, want to introduce some new folks to our sport or just want to practice your short game. Or maybe throw for that elusive ACE.
