The Little 9 Holer That Could 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Greenvile has many disc golf options in it's general area, giving lots of options for play . Holmes Park is a 9 hole course that fills one of those voids . It's set in a small residential park that also has knothole baseball and tennis . The parking lot is big enough , and you can park facing hole 1 . Just walk over a small mound and you are standing on the tee pad . There was what looked like a bathroom near the ball field , but I couldn't tell whether it was open .
THE EQUIPMENT -- The concrete tee pads were in good enough shape They are 3 1/2 X 7' . The tee signs are decent. They sit about 2 feet off the ground , and give the hole # , par and distance . The baskets are yellow Discatchers .
THE LANDSCAPE -- There is some elevation on the course . #s 1 , 2 , 6 & 7 are downhill and #4 , 8 and 9 are uphill . A creek comes into play on hole 3 .It's shallow , so you won't have problems fishing a disc out of it . The course plays park-style throughout . and is very clean . There is a cool path that goes under and around a giant twisted oak , going from 5 to the 6 tee pad .
THE HIGHLIGHTS -- The course is very short at just over 2000' total . Even though #3 is only 261' , it bends left to right and is protected with the creek behind it , and some brush in the fairway .
BEST HOLE -- #4 , the longest hole on the course at 333' . It plays longer , because it slopes up quite a bit , and the fairway has trees and brush on the left .
THE TIME -- It will take someone solo a bit under 30 minutes to play the course . A foursome will get through in about an hour .
DISC RISK -- VERY LOW . The course is short and clean . You will have to try hard to lose you disc here .

Cons:

SAFETY -- The #1 hole is kind of scary . It is less than 300' and slopes downhill , but has the street the length of the hole on the left . There are good chances to drift on onto the road , especially since it can get windy here , Not a good starter hole .
There is also a walking path that comes into play near holes 1 and 3 . A couple of the fairways parallel each other , 6 & 7 . You could easily clip a player if your disc drifts just a little .
NAVIGATION -- a couple of places here are missing NEXT TEE signs going from 4 to 5 , you need to travel uphill , keeping the tennis courts to your right , and the tee pad will be just a couple of hundred feet from #4 basket . #5-6 will involve you going through a path under the big oak . Going from #1 - #2 , it is backwards , up the hill and to the right .

CHALLENGE -- It's short and fast . Several holes lack obstacles . #1 , , 2 , and you might make the case for #5 , a straight shot 135' with a few trees around the basket . If you aren't under par here , you are new or having a bad day .
THE ELEMENTS -- After a good rain , footing may be a problem . The course is not always grassy and dropping down to a few fairways could cause some untimely slipping .

Other Thoughts:

You have to give credit where due , a doable course to work on your short game with . There is even a nice shelter to hang out in , going from #9 to the parking lot . It's packed tight ,but still fun enough .
MY RECOMMENDATION -- Good course to introduce disc golf to someone . Also a fun enough course to keep newbies working on their improving game . good enough course for the locals to hang out at , along with maybe families getting in a quick after-dinner round . This might have 1 hole that could interest intermediates on up ( 4 ) . Other than that , it's a birdie fest or ace run . Great leg stretch for the traveler going through Greenville , and easy pickup for the Course Collector who can combine this with several quick nearby courses .
UNLESS DOING A LOT OF BAGGING , OR BEING LOCAL YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK BEFORE YOU PLAY THIS COURSE .

Holmes and Homes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-It's nice that there is a quick nine hole course that's very close to Timmons and there's another nine hole course nearby at Hampton Park. With this course, Hampton, and Timmons, you can easily fit in 36 holes. Here at Holmes Park is just a notch easier than Timmons, a fun start for beginners and recreational players. Many holes here are in a beginner's range to birdie, so it's a confidence booster.

-Didn't take me long to play it. Maybe twenty-five minutes. Another interesting thing about this course is that one of my church leaders and close friend of mine would often play here with friends when he was in school. I'd recommend to a group of coworkers, a church group, and pretty much any other group of friends that have a special day planned. Most of the holes here are pretty short. Only a couple are a little bit longer so there'd be fun competition and some chances for a hole in one.

-It's a neighborhood park, and it's very visible to whoever passes by. There are many houses in sight too, so it's extremely accessible and people don't have to really search for disc golf. They'll simply see the baskets and they could instantly be intrigued just by observation. Just seeing some baskets when I started playing at Bonclarken, as well as that Zoey 101 episode are what got me hooked.

-Some of the holes are fun even for me who started playing almost a decade ago. #3 was very cool being straight along a ditch to the right. #4 was my favorite. Beginners will despise this hole because it's longer AND steep uphill (nearly 30' up in elevation). 321' and plays just over 400'. This is a more pro par three with a nice left turn allowing righty backhand throwers like myself to really pump one up there. It's a very tough hole, but very attackable too. I'd call this hole the "goal setter" at Holmes. After this hole, you get to play a short 140' hole between a couple of trees (#5) and then a downhill 185' hole on a roll away green (#6). Nice variety in this par three course.

Cons:

-I do bring up potential safety hazards a lot. Probably almost as much as Randy Jackson says the word "pitchy." But there's some serious concern here considering the fact that there is a walking trail. #2's pin is maybe a foot away from the trail and the trail is in the middle of the fairway on #3. Don't be careless. Not only that, but #1 is right next to the neighborhood road. If it's windy, you could hit that road or even have a bad enough skip that lands in someone's front yard.

-Some graffiti on the baskets. Not cool.

Other Thoughts:

-Other than the road being to close to #1 and the walking trail being too close on #2 and #3, there's nothing that's relatively flawed here. The course just doesn't really have its own special spaces that some others do. Some of the holes here quite short, so more experienced players probably won't particularly enjoy those. They are still solid holes nonetheless, since they are distinctive enough.

-I don't think Holmes is as fun as Hampton. Hampton is a very fun nine holer nearby with lots of elevation change. Holmes has a pretty good amount of elevation and more available since there are no restricted hours and is still a pretty good nine hole course all in all. Even though I don't think it's as good as Hampton, I'd maybe recommend this course over Hampton to more players since it's less difficult and is easier to find time to play.
