The older Gem of Columbia MO 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

What a fun course. I recently went back to play this course after only playing it once before and being left very frustrated with course upkeep and design. Whelp, several years later and I'm a much better player and the course was in near perfect shape. Really makes you question some of the older reviews for courses and puts a focus on newer reviews for me.

This course has it all. You need good power (350+) to score on the first few holes. After that the course ranges from lightly wooded to heavily wooded with tight gaps that reward solid shots or punish you for mistakes. There are straight shots, flex lines, shots finishing left and right. Here's the thing. almost every hole on this course is setup to where a 250ft straight shot with a mid or putter will give you a par at worst. yes there are tight gaps but for the most part they are fair.....see "Cons" for questionable area.

This is a great course if you are accurate with putters and mids once you get past the opening holes and hole 18. This is not a course you can carve up by throwing firebirds bh and fh as you will be punished for skipping left or right.

This course can be set up in so many combinations that I wish it had 2 baskets on each hole. So much variety.

There is a decent sized parking lot and the 1st tee is close.

Cons:

Holes 13-15. I've affectionately labeled this "The Pit" these 3 holes and how you play them will probably determine how much you like or dislike this course. They play links style so an errant shot from any of the tees could land in any of the 3 fairways. There is a creek/gully winding through that can really be annoying if its rained. It's very strange playing this beautiful course that moves in and out of the woods with defined fairways on the wooded holes then you get to these 3 holes and it feels like jail. A bit of a poke n hope feel. Is it possible to get the 2 on all 3.. yes. is it likely, no.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course is criminally overlooked due to Harmony Bends. However this course is an excellent play if you come to town and find that it rained. In fact, if you go to Harmony Bends and get to the first hole and see a lot of water in the creeks you can bet a few holes on the back nine will be marshy. I say turn the car around and head to the Hills . Man courses with hills in the name are solid "Indian Hills", "Hanna Hills", "Holler in the Hills" I may be onto something........

Pros:

Indian Hills disc golf course is set in the beautiful back section of the park. It's surrounded by neighborhoods on a couple sides but you never really notice except a couple spots. It seems like you're playing out in the woods with nothing nearby. Great atmosphere.

There's one large, level concrete tee per hole. These are plenty grippy and in great shape. More than adequate.

The baskets here are Mach 3's that are in remarkably good shape still. I'm generally not the biggest fan of these, but these seemed to catch great. Maybe I was just on my game, who knows. No complaints with them though. These have the number plates with a yellow circle around the number on top. Loved this, since it made spotting the pins pretty easy in the shadows. Multiple pin positions on every hole. 2 on most but quite a few had 3. These vary in distances and often bend the hole either left or right for the longs.

The tee signs are top notch. They have the hole #, par, next tee arrows, distances to all the pin placements and a hole map showing all pin placements and a basic map of the intended line. My favorite part of these was the holes cut out next to each distance to bolt a washer on indicating what pin is in play currently. What's even better is that every one of them was in the right spot. I can't tell you how many set ups like this I've seen that didn't match the pin it said was in play on the sign, to the one that actually was. I wish more courses with multiple pins did this.

Multiple big, obvious Next tee signs all throughout the course which makes navigation a breeze. They're not even necessary since it shows the next tee on every tee sign, but I'm not complaining. Great little touch.

There's a good mix of openish to heavily wooded. No hole is entirely open, but the first 2 are close. The first 6 to 7 play in a lightly wooded area before you get to the next 12 or so in the woods. 18 is reminiscent of the first few holes in that it is lightly wooded. It makes sense since it plays alongside hole 1 and brings you back to the parking lot.

Water can come into play in the form of the creek that runs through the course. It was bone dry today, but I'd assume it fills up in the spring or after a lot of rain. It's in play on at least 2 holes. For being called Indian Hills, it's not very hilly. There is some undulation in the terrain in the woods though. Not completely flat but pretty close.

The course is permanent and free to play. There was only one other group when we were there, but I'd imagine it gets a solid amount of play. As it should. Fun course.

Cons:

It was very dry when I was here but I'd imagine it would be pretty treacherous in quite a few spots after it rains. Nothing major but a lot of bare dirt sections in the woods.

A couple of the wooded holes on the back half are a little bit, um, lacking in the gap department. I mean, there are technically gaps off the tee, but it's almost just close your eyes and hope for the best. Only on a couple. Maybe if I could throw even a semblence of a decent forehand it wouldn't have been so noticable.

Other Thoughts:

Let's not lie. 99% of people who come to Colombia are here for Harmony Bends. Myself included. But I'd find time to play at least a round here. It's not the most challenging course out there, but it's no slouch either. I was pleasantly surprised with it after my early evening round today. In fact, I may even play it again before I head back to WI. Not a destination course by itself but it's located in a destination worth visiting.

Here's to the Hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Indian Hills DGC is a good a good one. It's no Harmony Bend, but better than Albert Oakland Park's Upper. On the front nine there are fairly open grassy fairways, but the there are enough trees to shape different lines and create some tough throws and difficult pars. The back nine gets into the woods and demands more precision. The distance is reduced, but you really have to nail the lines.

There are concrete tees, good baskets, and nice signs that have a moveable washer that indicates which pin position is currently in use. The layout is not too hard to follow, but the map may be useful once or twice. A minor amount of elevation change and a creek are in play on the wooded side of the course.

Hole one is a good drive a bit over 300' with a little right to left. You have to keep it low to stay out of the tree branches on the right. I thought i had it, but was about 18'' too high, and got the knock down. Two putted for a bogey. Hole 2 is a long fairway, with a hard 90 degree turn to the right at the end. The trees on either side are pretty dense, and that first shot has to be perfectly in place if you want to set up a good approach shot and have a birdie putt. I also liked the line on hole 6 that needed some flex and had a small window to look at the pin. 9 was another low line drive curling to the left the end. It needs some zip to get the distance and luck to get the perfect skip through the trees to the pin.

I liked the tight lines through the woods on the back nine a lot. 10 is a great throw with an early gap, then crossing a footbridge into a decent fairway. I snapped a strong drive that faded very near the basket amongst the trees at the opposite end, but couldn't get the birdie putt to drop. 11 is a par 4 with a basket that sits on a slippery hill surrounded by trees. I left myself a tough second shot and two putted for par. 12 is a long dogleg right, that is also a par 4. A tough drive to keep on line and get distance with. I went for it, and made a throw that would've been perfect if it were a foot to the left. I bonked that tree on the corner, and couldn't save the par from there. Hole 13 is a shorter version of 12, a steady left to right bend. I threw a sidearm that again, looked good at first but missed the line by the width of a tree trunk and was cut down at the inside of the corner. 14 plays a fairly short but moderately wooded line with a with a protected pin location. 15 turns and goes slightly down hill on the other side of the creek. This fairway also has an early gap in the trees and a pin that can deal some rolls and tough comebacks. 16 is one more mid range tunnel shot, similar to the previous two but a different trajectory. 17 was in the shorter red pin, which is a RHBH hyzer through an intimidating but not impossible to avoid stand of trees. I didn't make a very good drive on that and took another bogey. 18 is back into more open air comparatively, with a big tree in the center of the fairway halfway to the pin. The basket has clusters of trees on both sides. You can go for the small window low hyzer right side, or big air anny on the left. I went left, and overshot the pin by 20'. Still without a birdie on the round, I went aggressively for the chains, and overshot badly, leading to a three putt bogey. Ouch.

Cons:

Some of the open holes are a little bland. The woods may be really frustrating for beginners or pros. Tough lines for a newbie, and not enough of a challenge for for the very skilled players.

There was a bit of mud here and there, but it not too messy except for the transition between hole 4 and 5.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked Indian Hills DGC. There is a decent mix of shots that have a little bit of everything, aside from big elevation changes.

I definitely preferred the back nine to the the front, but didn't play it very well. I was 2 over par through 11 holes, but made bogies on 5 of the last 7 and finished at 6 over par. No birdies for me on this visit, but they are there to be had.

Currently my second favorite course in Columbia. Well worth a try if Harmony Bend is underwater, too crowded or you been there and done that. I guess I'll have to go back and make certain Albert Oakland Lower doesn't deserve the silver medal.

Columbia is a fun college town, and if you want a good steakhouse at a good price, go and eat at Murray's. A local recommended it to us, and we got a fantastic meal at a very fair price. It made my girlfriend/caddy happy, and offset the cost of staying at the Tiger Hotel after a show at the Blue Note. Great weekend destination.

Fun, technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Tight, technical course that rewards shot selection and shot shaping.
+ I expected the brush and undergrowth to be much worse than it actually was. The course was in outstanding condition when I played it leading up to and during the Mid America Open.
+ Signs were great for the MAO. Everything was clearly marked and easy to find.
+ Concrete teepads were in great shape.
+ All holes played relatively fairly. There are birdie opportunities, but require you to make a risk/reward decision if you want to go for them and how you approach them.
+ Many cedar trees add to the difficulty of the course. If you make an effort to avoid them, you are likely playing for par. But if you get aggressive and end up in them, bogey is much more likely.
+ Most holes require only a mid-range and a putter, with an occasional fairway driver shot mixed in. Shaping lines and staying in the fairway is much more rewarding than distance.
+ This is a course that can bridge the gap between big arm guys and the rest of us. Holes 2 and 18 are really the only holes where a 400+ ft drive is needed.
+ Good variety of BH, FH, hyzer, anhyzer shots mixed throughout the entire course.
+ Good flow. No jumping across fairways required.

Cons:

- Hole 13 is just brutal! I spent 20 minutes during a practice round trying to find a line to get within 50 feet of the pin. It wasn't there for me. And laying up for par wasn't a gimme either.
- There's a dog park on the premises, but there was no water facilities for the dogs. (My dog is my DG buddy and goes everywhere with me so it was disappointing, especially on a hot day when he was practically out of water by the last few holes.)

Other Thoughts:

* I really enjoyed this course, much more than I expected I would. I look forward to going back again.

A very pretty course with some very technical shots. Its a pleasent course that will really test you. Wooded Wooded Wooded

Cons:

Plan on doing a little extra walking because you can't see half the pins from the tee pad and you'll definitely want to spot the pin before you throw. Wooded Wooded Wooded

Other Thoughts:

A technical course that really gives you a chance to dig into your arsenal. You"ll throw every type of shot and the best score will go to the most versatile player.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Large variety of holes and shots on the course. The first 8 or so holes are fairly wide open but with obstacles and doglegs on most of the holes, after 8 or so the course starts going through some woods which leads to some great tight shots that require accuracy until hole 18 presents another open shot to a basket in a guarded pin position
-Decent range of distance with holes ranging from right around two hundred feet all the way up to a little over 400 hundred feet.
-Good tee-pads and decent baskets on the course
-Several benches throughout the course
-The course provides a lot of shade on the back nine for those hot Missouri days
-The course does a good job of steering clear of other park users and you never really have to worry about interfering with other park users, and the holes never cross fairways which is nice
-The course will punish you for going off the fairway on many of the holes, which is nice because it rewards accuracy

Cons:

-The tee-signs are a little outdated and not the most helpful and two of them were missing.
-For the most part the flow of the course is pretty easy to follow but there are a few spots where you can get turned around and several of the holes have a decent walk between them which can lead to getting turned around while looking for a few holes (I suggest taking a map the first time you play)
-In the summer the course gets a lot of thick rough on the side of the fairways that could lead to some lost discs.
-Not the best part of town but its also not the worst part of town either.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course to play when I visit Columbia. It provides a great variety of shots and a good amount of challenge without getting to frustrating or unfair. During the hot summer months make sure you bring a good amount of water with you. If you are stopping in Columbia or nearby definitely make sure you stop by and play this course, it is definitely worth it.

-Par is a good score ~1000 rated
-Accuracy and distance are of equal importance to score well
-Sitting areas on many of holes
-Signature Holes would be 2,4,9,11,12,15,16

Indian Hills! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 29, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Usually quiet, the fairways are often maintained, decent baskets, a variety of shots to challenge the player, nice private benches where you can take a break with plenty of shade, demanding of accuracy and good for shaping your game. Friendly and fun loving people are typically found here; B-Holes are #5 tee and #10 tee.

Cons:

Trash (lack of trashcans), tends to be a bit muddy/wet, thorns and lack of top notch maintenance. Discs can be lost here, as with anywhere, but Indian Hills is full of particularly vicious cedar trees of various shapes and sizes. Lack of signage (bring a map if you've never played it!)

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty: Intermediate - Pro. This is where I learned to play DG - I prefer it over the Oakland Park courses here in Columbia. It's more challenging, less crowded, and features longer holes. Bring your midranges, you are going to need them. Definitely worth playing - great 'private' feel to it.

Pros:

a beautiful course that makes you feel like youre in the middle of the country, very peaceful. a great varity of holes from long hyzers to short tunnels. great tee pads, well use of park and OBs and very well maintaned and groomed. a very fun course that will challenge every golfer.

Cons:

couldnt find too many cons out here. there where no tee signs and at times could be tricky to navigate from tee to tee. also if you are unfamilar with the course, you will want to walk the fairway to find the basket first. it also lacked trash cans, it had a couple, but it could have used more. parking wouldnt normally be an issue, but i could see it causing some problems for tournies.

Other Thoughts:

3 of us made a road trip from KC to check out the 3 local courses. we played oakland top and back, and figured we would play Indian once then return to play the Back course because we enjoyed it so much. after the 4th hole we new right then adn there we had to stay and play another round, it really is a great course, i highly recommend playing it if passing by, or to make a small raod trip for it

Glad to find this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is at the top of my list it has the best of both worlds here. You like to pitch your disc out there you have the frount nine if you want the tight alleys play the back nine. I can not say enough about the layout take a spotter on some of the holes you are going to need one very tight holes and kindof grown up.

Cons:

A brush hog could be used so lesser players can find there discs it is rough if one hits the brush on the back nine you could be saying good bye to your fav disc.

Other Thoughts:

If some of the holes had some clearing done not much but just enough to be able to enjoy the time and find that errend shot this would be a great course for all to play and have fun.

Much needed course updates increased my rating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 1, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Front 9 relatively open, back 9 in deep woods, offers a good variety of hole lengths and shots required to play them.
-Nice level tee pads, plenty long enough.
-Multiple pin placements on all holes
-Signage is fantastic. In my original review, navigation was a big con. Since then the city of Columbia eventually realized what they had here and are taking good care of it. Next tee signs are large and easy to spot; possibly the best I have seen.
-Some of the punishing shule has been cleaned out. Don't worry, the course is still plenty difficult. But the formerly ridiculous holes are now fair.

Cons:

-Course isn't in the best of neighborhoods, trash is often found in the woods, no trash cans EDIT: The Columbia police department had a community policing unit located within two blocks of the park so that is an improvement. More development behind the course so the back parts of the park aren't the "high spots" they used to be.
-Certain spots prone to erosion and can become slippery when wet (One of Beethoven's favorites). 7 green, 8 tee and 14 where the land falls off toward the creek for example.
-Not a ton of elevation but what there is gets used fairly well. Tight little downhill shot on 15, uphill shot through the trees on 5 and drop-offs to greens 1 and 11.

Other Thoughts:

A pleasant walk through the park can <EDIT: still> be spoiled by this course. The holes don't look that tough but I never seem to score well here. Some longer holes and the shorter ones are tight. Has much sharper doglegs than I have seen elsewhere, particularly 11 and 12. Despite the additional development nearby, you can still feel like you have the place to yourself on all but holes 1, 3, and 6. If you are hitting the destination course that is Harmony Bends, I highly encourage you to play it's older, more surly brother.

Tough on a windy day 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really liked this course for its diversity of hole lengths and obstacles. The first 12 holes or so play mostly through open areas with big pine trees on each side. The next 5 holes are in some open woods and some really tight woods. The wood holes are not easy, they are short but they are really easy to bogey or double bogey. Despite the name "Indian Hills" the course is nice a flat, easy to walk, you could play 36 holes easily and not be too tired.

Cons:

The course really needs a map or new tee signs that show the path of the hole. Many times I had to walk quite a ways to find out where the pin is. Trees are a big problem here, you really have to be able to throw straight every drive.

Other Thoughts:

Love this course, could play it over and over again.
